7th Edinburgh - National Chess Finals

The 7th

Edinburgh Boys Brigade Company for the fifth consecutive years were successful in reaching the National Chess Finals. Andrew Rowney, Scott Hannah, Stewart Rowney and reserve Scott Goodman each played their part in guiding our team to the Scottish Finals which were played up in Aberdeen against 1

st Scone. This in itself was a close fought match, Edinburgh clinching

the crown by a tiny margin. The team travelled up to Aberdeen with parent James Rowney overseeing proceedings as a stand in for coach and officer David Clarke. The competition itself was run on Saturday 29

th March. 7

th Edinburgh and 1

st Scone representing Scotland and 1

st

Knocknamuckley represented Northern Ireland alongside reigning Champions 1st

Cheam representing England. In the Pre-National Final draw we were up against 1

st Knocknamuckley. The match was a comfortable affair with 7

th Edinburgh

winning 7 - 2. In the other Pre-National Finals, 1st

Cheam came out winners beating 1st

Scone. After a well-timed refreshing lunch it was going to be an intense afternoon for both boys and overseeing adults. As expected, the afternoons matches were far harder for the boys from Edinburgh. Unfortunately 1

st Cheam played slightly better on the day

beating 7th

Edinburgh by the slender of margins. My congratulations goes out to 1

st Cheam and we look forward to competing once again in the competition next year, aiming for

one better! In the evening we were presented with our second place trophies by Lewis MacDonald MSP for Labour. A special congratulations has to go out to Andrew Rowney, Scott Hannah and Stuart Rowney who have played in the entirety of the competition but also to Scott Goodman, Patrick Bellet, Matthew Steel, Rory Robinson and Euan Murray who had played as either reserve or in our B Team - our development squad for the future. The 7

th Edinburgh Company is once again proud and

impressed by all of the boys individual performances throughout the duration of the competition. David Clarke: 7

th Edinburgh Company Section Officer In Charge

Anchors & Juniors Take over Dynamic Earth

Some 192 anchor boys and junior section boys with 45 officers and leaders came together on Sunday 30 March at our dynamic earth to celebrate being part of our Battalion and to celebrate the world that God has given us. Our thanks go to the Rev Rolf Billes for preparing and leading the service when we all came together in the Biosphere Room after the tour of our dynamic earth. The service celebrated our dynamic earth, and sky, our dynamic God, our dynamic Scotland, and our dynamic BB. Thank you to the 4 sections with their Boys who prepared and came up front to deliver their piece. All of the Boys also enjoyed their crisps and juice! It was a very full afternoon and some of the Boys may well have been tired after arriving just after 2pm, touring round, and the service and leaving at 5.20pm.

Thank you to the leaders who gave up their Sunday afternoon and brought the Boys and took them home. Thanks also to the Battalion for their financial support as the sections are charged only half the Boys cost with leaders not being charged. The collection totalled £187 and this amount shall go to this year’s World Mission Council ‘Czech it Out’ project and appeal. Arthur Mathieson For the AB & JS activities committee

It was disappointing that only six Sections took part and I would commend Leaders to participate in the future. David A Connell

All in the past? Interest in BB memorabilia? Any officers and leaders with an interest in BB badges going back in time and other memorabilia is invited to come along and view the 10th Leith archive on Saturday 14 June. The items will be on display between 10.30-12pm at the church halls (on the stage) in 6 Henderson Street eh6 6bs. The display is for the local members of the BB collectors club but all and everyone is truly welcome. It is not just for the 'anoraks', I am confident that you will be interested and perhaps even fascinated. If you have a special item of your own / own company please bring it along. Arthur Mathieson

Leith Boys’ Brigade Badges

I am a member of the Boys’ Brigade Collectors’ Club and am trying to find certain badges which were produced in Leith some years ago. They are :- 22nd Leith Company Badge. Leith Battalion May Fair, 10th May 1958 – a cream coloured button badge with red lettering; Leith Battalion 1900-1975 – a blue badge with white lettering. I realise that these were issued a long time ago, but if someone has any tucked away and is prepared to part with them, I should be very happy to buy them, swap them, or to make a donation for them. If you are able to help, please contact me on 07739 667886 or at [email protected] With many thanks. David Aubrey, Q.C. President, The Boys’ Brigade in Wales

3rd, 23rd and 24th Leith Boys’ Brigade

I've been involved in applying for funding for the 3rd Leith BB War Memorial Lamp which usually sits in the grounds of Leith St Andrew's Church, Easter Road. I say usually, as we were successful and it is currently away for restoration. I have been researching the men mentioned on the lamp and was lucky enough to have access to registers going back to 1906 as well as a lot of old photos from across the years. These three are from around 1949/50 and shows the Company parading as part of their Golden Jubilee at Henderson Gardens, also at the bottom of Easter Road and at the Foot of Leith Walk. We hope to have a reunion of ex-members later in the year and would love to hear from any ex-members from the many companies who have met in Leith St Andrew's, formerly Claremont Kirk. It has been known as the 3rd, 23rd and 24th Leith at various points. Joanne Baird [email protected]
