Introduction

• Exciting new technologies are being developed every day to help teachers become more interactive with their students

• Some of these technologies, available now that were not seen in the classroom in the past, include:o Blackboard Learno Smart Boardo Projectorso Microsoft Officeo iPads and Kindleso Digital Video Recording

Blackboard

• Blackboard is an online utility that teachers use to get information out to student's through the internet.

• Blackboard offers a variety of online services to teachers to get students more engaged in the course they are taking such as:o File Access to Teacher Materialso Discussion Groupso Grade Postingso Quizzeso Drop-box for Assignments

Smart Board • The Smart Board is an interactive

whiteboard that uses touch detection for use input.

• The whiteboard operates as a part of system that includes:o Interactive Whiteboardo Computero Projectoro Software: "Smart Notebook

collaborative learning software" • The technology allows teachers to

create a lesson and save it to share to students at a later time

Projectors • Projectors are used to provide a

way for information to be shown in a large area.

• Projectors are used within the classroom, business presentations, and are also used to show movies.

• They connect to a computer and the information and images that are shown on the screen get projected into a bigger image on the projector screens.  

• This is useful in the classroom because they allow teachers to display information from their personal computers to a larger audience

• Prices range depending on what it is used for. They can be found at any place where technology is sold. Such a Best Buy.

Microsoft Office• Microsoft Office is a computer

software that is used in homes, offices, and schools throughout the world. 

• Microsoft Office can be used for a variety of things such as PowerPoint, Excel, Word documents, and also an email. 

• It ranges in price with how many applications you need.

• Students and teachers are able to type documents via Word. 

• This computer software provides teachers and students ways to give presentations via PowerPoint.

• It also allows them to keep organized spreadsheets via Excel.

iPads and Kindles • Portable tablet based computers.• iPad ($400-$500)

o Offers a diverse array of applications for various tasks including electronic literature as well as educational apps.

• Kindle ($100-$200)o Provides electronic display of literature with the option to

download thousands of books at any given time.

Both are popular in: • Classroom environments• Workplaces (nursing)• Avid readers (iBook)

The iPad is fully integrated into the UofA med school program for the display of digital lectures.

Digital Recording• The process of electronically capturing visual and audio

signals.• Becoming increasingly popular in online courses to provide

visualization of course lectures.o Podcasts- Short videos or audio clips that can be

viewed on a portible device such as the iPad or iPod.o Youtube- A video hosting site which allows free video

hosting for entertainment or educational purposes.

Cost of Digital recording devices is dependant on the their quality. • Video recorders are included in most

new computers at no cost. • Professional devices can cost

thousands.
