Congratulations on your decision to join the Indiana University Bloomington

family. The Office of First Year Experience Programs is excited that you have

made this choice, and we know you will find it a very special place to live

and continue your education. Please read this booklet carefully. It outlines

the next steps to becoming a student here and provides important dates and

information. Since you are not new to the college experience, but you are new

to the Indiana University Bloomington campus, we’ll help tailor your New

Student Orientation experience. Welcome!

You’vebeenadmittedtoIU!Nowit’stimetotakethenextstep—makingthetransitiontoanewuniversity.NewStudentOrientationprovidesyoutheopportunitytobecomemorefamiliarwiththepeople,placesand

cultureofIU.Inaddition,youwillregisterforcourses,takerequiredplacementexams,andlearnabouttheservicesandprogramsthatarevitaltoyourlifeasanIUstudent.

Wehavespecificallydesignedthisone-dayorientationprogramwithyourexperiencesasatransferstudentinmind.WhenyoureceiveyourInvitation to New Student Orientation,youwillbegiventheopportunitytoselectfromfiveone-dayprogramsthroughoutthesummerdesignedspecificallyfortransferstudents.

TheprogramsfortransferstudentstakeplaceonJune24andJuly8,15,20,and21.HousingisavailableforthosewhoneedtoarrivetheeveningpriortoNewStudentOrientation.

While at this program, you will:• TakeplacementexamsrequiredforallincomingIUstudents,

includingtransferstudents.Additionaloptionalexamsforplacementandcoursecreditareavailableduringtheprogram.

You will need to visit fye.indiana.edu to have access to

FY(Me). This personalized website will have information specific to your transition to IU and is also where you will make your New

Student Orientation reservation.

Theonlywaytoknowifyouqualifyforaidistoapply,andtheapplicationprocessisfreeandonlineatwww.fafsa.ed.gov.TheFAFSA(FreeApplicationforFederalStudentAid)maybefiledanytimeafterJanuary1forthe2011-2012schoolyear.You’llwanttofilebyMarch10toensureyou’reconsideredforthemaximumamountoffinancialaidavailable.Ifyouhavequestionsaboutfinancialaid,findcontactinformationfortheOfficeofStudentFinancialAssistanceatwww.indiana.edu/~sfa.

New Student Orientation is required for all new students. You must attend New Student

Orientation before you can register for classes.

New Student Orientation Option in the Fall

StudentswhoareabsolutelyunabletoattendNewStudentOrientationthissummerwillattendinAugust,justpriortofallsemester.Remember,whileyouwillbeabletocreateacompleteclassscheduleinthefall,manysectionsandsomecoursesmayfillduringthesummerprogram.Yourattendanceinthesummerprogramisstronglyencouraged.

StudentOrientation.Thisinvitationwillincludeinstructionsonmakingyourreservation.

IUBeginningsThisuniqueprogramgivesyouthechancetoconnectwithotherIUtransferstudentsbeforefallsemesterevenbegins!Honeyourleadershipskillswhileteam-buildingwithyour

peersatIndianaUniversity’spremieroutdoorretreatcenter.ThroughparticipationintheIUBeginningsprogram,youwillbecomebetterequippedforyourtransitiontocampus,beginyour

timeatIUknowingotherstudents,andfeelmorepreparedtomeetthechallengesofyournewuniversity.

TheIUBeginningsTransferLeadershipprogramtakesplaceAugust19-24,returningjustintimeforWelcomeWeekactivities.Checkoutthewebsiteforadditionalinformationatfye.indiana.edu/iubeginnings.

Before Fall Semester Welcome WeekWelcomeWeekbeginsonWednesday,August24andisakeycomponentinacclimatingyoutoanewcampus.You’llhaveachancetolearnaboutyouracademicdepartment,meetotherIUstudents,attendvariouscampusevents,andjointheIUcommunityincelebratingthestartofthenewacademicyear.Don’tmissoutonprogramsduringWelcomeWeekspecificallydesignedforyouandothertransferstudents.

NewStudentOrientationandthestartofclasses.Pleasereviewthe“CountdowntoIU”checklistonthebackcoverofthisguidetoensurenothingisoverlooked.

Pleaseresistthetemptationtomaketheonlinereservationforyourstudent.Becauseyourstudentwillneedtosetuppasswordsandcarefullyreadthrougheachstep,it’simportantthatheorshecompletesthisprocess.Whilesigningup,yourstudentwillhavetheopportunitytoprovideuswithyouremailaddresssothat

wecansendyouacopyoftheconfirmationemail.Encourageyourstudenttodothissowemaykeepintouchwithyoutoo.

Weunderstandthat“family”doesnotmeanonly“parents.”Guardians,spouses,andothersignificantsupportersarealwayswelcometoattend.However,pleasenotethatNewStudentOrientationisnotdesignedtoaccommodateyoungchildren.

AlthoughIndianaUniversitycommunicatesprimarilywithyourstudent,wetaketherelationshipbetweentheuniversity,parents,andstudentsseriously.Itwillbehelpfultoknowwhatyourstudentwillbereceivingandwhatheorsheneedstodobefore
