LETTER FROM THE�ecutive d�ect�2015 was a milestone year for WCFR! We served the �rst meal at our beautiful “new” home on June 2, 2015, and have made a tremendous impact in the lives of thousands of women and children living with food insecurity. Tens of thousands of nutritious meals were prepared and served with compassion and respect – but our work is far from done.

Nationally, one in �ve children lives with food insecurity. In Spokane, it’s worse. One in four children lack access to enough food for an active, healthy life. WCFR addresses this need by preparing every meal with healthy proteins and fresh dairy, fruits and vegetables. We currently serve 900-1,400 meals each week – our next goal is 2,500 meals.

In 2015, our outreach meal program, Nutrition-to-Go, worked in collaboration with nine community agencies to offer healthy meals to their clients. Every meal was provided at no cost to the agencies or the individuals they serve. Nutrition Essentials, our nutrition education program, continued into its second year. We taught women to make better choices at food banks, and how to turn those ingredients into healthy, satisfying meals. They shared ideas, set goals and made commitments to prioritize their health and reduce the risks of preventable diseases.

During Spokane’s worst windstorm in history, we had the power and the food to help thousands of individuals who were not so fortunate. We also prepared 1,400 traditional Thanksgiving meals for our annual community dinner at Rogers High School.

Meeting the needs of hungry families requires a collaborative effort. It takes the wisdom and vision of our board of directors; the commitment and energy of our small staff; the helpful hands of 200 dedicated volunteers; tons of donated food; philanthropic corporate sponsors, grantors, service clubs, and churches; and our donors who stand with us in the belief that no one should go to bed hungry.

Women & Children’s Free Restaurant & Community Kitchen is a vital safety net which �lls nutritional gaps for women and children in need while fostering dignity and respect, both within our restaurant and in the community.

In Spokane County, more than 50,000 women and their children live below the poverty level. This means that many of these families can’t afford to feed themselves despite trying to budget their limited resources.

It is our goal at WCFR to ensure that the people we serve receive a well-balanced meal. Without a proper diet they will have a more dif�cult time focusing at work and school; will live at a higher stress rate; and are much less likely to attain their goals. More importantly, we serve people with dignity, inspire change, and give them back their worth.

who we s�veWe would not be the thriving and welcoming place that we are without all of the wonderful volunteers who help us on a daily basis! Our volunteers do everything from prepping food and washing dishes, to laundry and handyman projects. 12,386 hours of their valuable time was utilized in 2015 – the equivalent of 6 full time employees.

WCFR offers sponsorship opportunities that combine �nancial support with volunteer opportunities.

A volunteer Board of Directors was elected to run WCFR.1990

A group of approximately 20 women called “Women United” took over administration of WCFR, continued to serve free meals twice weekly, while arranging meetings and self-help projects. 1989

WCFR added Nutrition-to-Go, a program that provides scratch-made, nutritious meals to other community partners at no charge. 2005
