Any not preordered will still be available to members at a later date but at a higher price to cover the club for purchasing and handling them.

btw the other month I took part in a Skype chat with the other Bolwell clubs and one of the things discussed was the co-ordination between the clubs to produce and procure merchandise and reproduction parts, thus avoiding duplication of effort and costs. BARN FIND

30 Years of Darkness - 1 of 18 Original Bolwell Nagari Sports B8/78 Sees the Light

Chassis Number B8/78 Model: Bolwell Nagari Sports (13th built out of 18) Built Date: 12/72Original colour: Silver

First Owner: Order placed on the 5th October 1972 by Mr Ross Reid, 9 Hunter Street, Yarralumla ACT 2600. The original due date was scheduled for 15th December 1972; however, the Sports was not delivered till the 22nd December 1972.

Second Owner: Brian Walters changed the colour during his ownership from

Silver to Signal Red. Brian sold B8/78 in 1981 to Colin Ryan.

Third Owner: Colin Ryan owned B8/78 from July 1981 and sold it to Dennis Mitchell who lived at Austral NSW in July 1985. Shortly after Dennis purchased the car he moved to a property in Yass.

Fourth Owner: Dennis Mitchell drove the car for approximately 18 months and competed in several Hill Climbs and Motorsport events around the Goulburn, Picton and Camden Areas in NSW.

From the Original Factory Built Sports the only change in 45 years was an additional piece to the rollbar to meet scrutineering for track events and one of the previous owners had changed the Radiator to an XA Falcon V8. Other than these minor changes everything is exactly how it left the factory right down to the Steering wheel, Bolwell seats, wheels, locknuts and steel cut down fan.

In 1987, Dennis parked the car in a barn on his 12 Acre Property at Yass, without the roof erected, tonneau on or a car cover over the vehicle and it sat there for the next 30 years until:

On the 12th October 2017, Mrs Joy Witton contacted Colin Watson, President of the NSW Bowell Club. Joy was making enquiries to see if Colin knew of anybody who would be interested in purchasing her Husband’s Bolwell Nagari as he had passed away on the 1st of August 2017 at the age of 61 after owning the car for 32 years. Colin asked further questions to identify what number the Bolwell Nagari was and realised it was one of the missing sports. It was either B8/78 or B8/64 as these are the only two Sports unaccounted for. On further enquires, Joy informed Colin that the Bolwell Nagari had been sitting in a barn for 30 years untouched as her Husband Dennis had driven it for two years and parked it up in the Barn.

Colin Watson contacted Bolwell Tragic Mark Cleaves to tell him the news that one of the missing Sports had turned up and Mark was sure it was B8/78. Mark had last seen this vehicle in November 1981 when he was visited by previous owner Colin Ryan at Dundas to compare it with his Bolwell Nagari Sports B8/66.

Colin made an arrangement with Joy to come and inspect the Bolwell Nagari Sports on the 15th October 2017. Colin and Mark left Colin’s house at 7.30 am for a 2.5-hour trip to Joy’s Property at Yass. On arrival, Joy met Colin and Mark at the front gate and escorted them to the Barn. With absolute excitement on opening the doors, Colin and Mark immediately confirmed that it was B8/78 from its rollbar and Red tail. Mark was horrified at the condition that B8/78 was in, after

seeing the car 36 years ago, however Colin was more optimistic than Mark as he had seen plenty of barn finds on YouTube and TV. The biggest shock was the smell coming from the car due to the Rat/Mice feces and urine from years nesting in the beloved sports. Mark could not believe that much dust could accumulate on a car if untouched for 30 years.

Colin and Mark had to hold back their excitement after finding one of the two lost Bolwell Nagari Sports. They were at the property for two hours inspecting and photographing every square inch of the car and speaking with Joy to find out more history on the car. This is one of the most original Bowell Nagari Sports to surface in many years, unchanged apart from a couple things since it left the Bolwell Factory. For Colin and Mark it was truly like stepping back in time to the

70’s and you could see past the dust, rust, rats nest and smell to see the potential in bringing it back to life for all to share.

On arrival home and after Mark and Colin went over the 160 pictures that Mark had taken on the day. Colin negotiated with Joy to purchase the sports and arranged to come and pick up the Sports on the 24th October 2017.

The day the B8/78 Bolwell Nagari Sports sees the light of day

With much excitement, Colin, Mark and another additional Bolwell tragic Geoff Lewis made an early start at 7.00am to go and pick up a Van and Car Trailer from a good friend of Colin’s. From Campbelltown they set off down the Hume highway to Yass to bring B8/78 to her new home at Narellan. After a 2.5 hour discussion of all things Bolwell we finally arrived at Joy’s property for the second time in two weeks, but this time we were leaving with the prized sports.

With a quick phone call to Joy at the gate, to make sure the dogs had been locked up, Colin gave me Mark the all clear to open the gate and they proceeded to the Barn. Joy met Colin, Mark and Jeff at the Barn and let them in for the 2nd time.

To their surprise Joy had moved bumper bars, gear boxes, bits of old Alfa Romeo and Jaguar parts and pumped the tyres up to allow us to push it out into the daylight. Much to our surprise that car rolled quite easily as we were worried that the brakes would have been locked on. After they pushed the Sports into to the day light Colin proceeded to hose off 30 years of dust changing the concrete slab into a muddy yellow paste that the Sports was parked on.

From there Mark proceeded to pull down the original Bolwell Wheels that had been on the shelf for many years and he also located the original wheel nuts and lock nuts. Joy had also discovered the original steering wheel, which had been

pulled off many years ago, but to Colin and Mark’s surprise it had been carefully stored in a box. In addition, Joy gave Colin anything that was related to the car as Dennis liked to change the look of the car with different wheels including Hotwires and Star Globe wheels.

On hosing and gathering all the parts Colin, Mark and Geoff proceeded to push the Sports to align with the Trailer ramps and then winched it onto the Trailer and loaded the van with all the additional parts. With this they all wished Joy all the best for the future as she had many other cars to unload from Dennis’s collection and headed North back up the Hume Highway with the Sports in tow.

On arrival at Colin’s the work began, the car was up in the air, wheels off, trim out, carpets binned from the smell. Also, we hosed out the Interior, engine bay, boot, chassis of the car to clear 30 years of Vermin homes.

The next was to wash B8/78 with a bucket, soap suds, sponge and the hose which showed her true colours she looked like a Nagari Sports with a new lease on life. Prior to releasing the jacks her original Bolwell Wheels and wheel nuts were put back on. She was now ready to take her pride of place in Coin and Sharon’s garage after Colin ousted his daughter and her new car and a big thank you to Sharon who gave up her dream kitchen for another Bolwell addition to the family.

Now the hard yard begin as Colin has set himself a goal to have B8/78 up and running for Easter 2018. There many challenges that lay ahead to achieve this goal.

Others…Others…Buchanan Racer, unfinished restoration for sale Wal Mitchell's old Buchanan racecar is looking for a new garage to call home. After languishing for many years, the unfinished restoration is available for sale for $32,000. It's run a number of engines over the years but started out as a MG "Y" type chassis with body number 38. At one stage it was fitted with a Grey Holden 6 cylinder engine.
