Joan Baez

Title

Gone From Danger (Collectors Edition)

Format: CD2

Label: PROPER RECORDS

Genre: FOLK

Following on from the success of Ring Them Bells as a Collectors Edition, Joan Baez' 1997 album gets a welcome re-issue. The 1st CD features Joan interpreting songs by Sinead Lohan, Dar Williams, Betty Elders and Richard Shindell along with a co-write of her own. It is a quality that came to Joan Baez ealy in her career and continues to this day. Gone With Danger is a reminder of the complex musical roads that Joan Baez has travelled these past 2 decaded or so, and the marvelously talented artists that she has mentored along the way, who have travelled on her 'bus' and then driven off to find their own pathways. She gave me the language that keeps me alive…" Tracks: CD1; No Mermaid / Reunion Hill / Crack In The Mirror / February / Fishing / If I Wrote You / Lily / Who Do You Think I Am / Mercy Bound / Money For Floods. Carrie Rodriguez She Ain’t Me CD CONTINENTAL SONG CITY Given her career path thus far, and her hugely successful series of records and tours with Chip Taylor, it is easy to pigeon hole Texan songwriter Carrie Rodriguez as a roots artist. Time to think again. She Ain’t Me, her follow up to debut Seven Angels On A Bicycle, released in 2006 to huge critical acclaim, ventures to take Rodriguez into the Americana rock/pop market with a bang. Produced by the legendary producer Malcolm Burn (Emmylou Harris, Patti Smith, Daniel Lanois) whose dense production bursting with new ideas is evident throughout, on She Ain’t Me we encounter a musician and songwriter experimenting with a bold, daring new sound and outlook to her music. Her heart may still be country but her head has new territories to roam. The album features song writing collaborations with Gary Louris, Jim Boquist, Dan Wilson, and Mary Gauthier alongside an appearance from Lucinda Williams. Tracks: Infinite Night / She Ain’t Me / Rag Doll / Absence / El Salvador / Mask Of Moses / The Big Mistake / Grace / Let Me In /El Dorado / Can’t Cry Enough

RAY WYLIE HUBBARD SNAKE FARM CD BORDELLO COUNTRY Ray Wylie Hubbard’s Snake Farm is a collection of commanding songs that represent the best of both worlds, juxtaposing impeccable lyrics with dirty, primal grooves. To listen to Ray Wylie Hubbard's Snake Farm is to enter an eerie netherworld populated by dark and fascinating characters, some of whom are creepy enough to give you the shivers. The sandpaper-voiced Hubbard, a Texas songwriting legend, works a primal, greasy groove with these bluesy portraits, starting with Ramona, the dancing, tattooed reptile-house worker of the unforgettable title track. "Snake Farm" hypnotically mixes slithering images of sex, fear, and humor. Hubbard strives for a tone of decadent elegance, whether evoking polecat love or the sideshow thievery of "Rabbit". Produced by the masterful Gurf Morlix, who keeps things lean, foreboding, and roadhouse rough, the album sounds as if it were recorded in a room lit only by a naked 90-watt bulb--the perfect atmosphere in which to conjure songs of sin, deceit, and subterranean shenanigans. By record's end, redemption appears in a gonzo-ized telling of the Christ tale ("Resurrection"). But the Devil holds center stage until then, particularly on "The Way of the Fallen," inspired by Dante's Inferno, and on the Joseph Campbell mythology of "Wild Gods of Mexico". Snake Farm is not for the faint of heart. But fans of lowlife chic and exemplary songwriting should lap this up quicker than cold longnecks and hot chicken-fried steak. --Alanna Nash Track list:Snake Farm/ Kilowatts/ Heartaches and Grease/ The Way of the Fallen/ Mother Hubbard’s Blues/ Rabbit/ Polecat/ Old Guitar/ Wild Gods of Mexico/ Live and Die Rock and Roll/ Resurrection

Uiscedwr Fish Cat Door CD YUKKA RECORDS FOLK The eagerly anticipated third instalment of the Uiscedwr story is here at last. ‘Fish Cat Door’ delivers the diverse musical ideas of founder members Anna Esslemont and Cormac Byrne (of Seth Lakeman band fame) in eleven brand new foot-stomping tracks. Previous winners of the BBC Young Folk Award, recipients of a PRS Foundation Award (Esslemont) and the BBC Fame Academy Bursary (Byrne), Uiscedwr have lived up to their numerous accolades, producing an album guaranteed to have you dancing, grooving and singing along from the first listen. Uiscedwr is all about Big Power – Small Package, clearly demonstrated by Esslemont and Byrne in the duo track, “E.S.P” which challenges the role of the musicians as they explore Indian and Latin inspired sty les with only fiddle & bodhran. Quirky songs such as “Prescription Junkie” and “Tip Tap Baby” follow Esslemont from her recent bone marrow transplant through to the tale of a dancer who can’t groove, with all the lyrical prowess of a young Kirsty MacColl. Underpinned by special guests James Hickman on guitar and Karen Tweed on accordion, the extra sounds allow for awesome textures and variety in tracks such as “The Dirty Nine Steps” and “Sunshine”. Uiscedwr are the folk musicians of the future, drawing on traditions from all over the world and bringing them home with unmistakable skill, panache and relevance. Keep practicing… “Ish-Ca-Door” Tracks: The Dirty Nine Steps / Prescription Junkie / Sunshine / Seven Letters / Tip Tap Baby / Germs / Girlyjig / End of the Day / Crucked Reels / E.S.P. / Neptune

Datarock Give It Up - CD Single CDSI NETTWERK ROCK/POP Norwegian NME Darlings return! ‘Give It Up’ is the opening salvo from the forthcoming new album, ‘Red’. It’s typical DATAROCK - a brilliant slice of 80’s inspired pop (complete with typically witty and surreal lyrics) that hooks you in on first listen. Having first wowed us back in 2005 with their ‘Datarock Datarock’ debut, containing songs such as ‘Fa Fa Fa’ that mixed relentless punk-funk with warped Talk ing Heads meets Devo humour, the forthcoming new album (entitled ‘Red’) by DATAROCK ups the musical ante considerably. ‘Give It Up’ is the opening salvo from the new record and is a perfect reintroduction to the band….a short sharp shock that is reminiscent of the post-punk musicality of acts such as The Associates and achieves the fine balancing act of sounding both current and retro….and funny. The video is brilliant (naturally), paraphrasing ‘Beat It’, ‘Bad’, the 1961 film of ‘West Side Story ’ and the 1996 film of ‘Romeo & Juliet’. Tracks: Give It Up – Radio Edit / Give It Up – Kissy Sell Out’s 4x4 Cello Mix / Give It Up – Fan Death Rework / Give It Up – Chateau Marmont Remix

Mamer Eagle CD REAL WORLD RECORDS WORLD Songs of the grasslands from one of China's most innovative and influential artists. Lyrical, troubador folk - infused with an alt-country sensibility. Mamer is one of China’s most innovative and influential artists, drawing inspiration from the songs and poetry of the grasslands where he grew up. Eagle features a repertoire of grassland songs, normally sung solo and accompanied by the simple two-stringed dombra, adapted and updated for the 21st century, whilst at the same t ime preserving their unaffected lyricism. He was born in Qitai County in China’s northwestern Xinjiang province, some 2000 miles from Beijing, near China’s border with Russia and Kazakhstan. One of 10 children, Mamer learnt the songs and instruments of the grasslands from his father and grandfather. His 5-piece band ‘IZ’ was credited with s ingle-handedly kick-starting China’s a lt-country scene, and Eagle is his debut solo a lbum. With a warmer and more intimate sound than his recordings with IZ, Eagle finds Mamer in an introspective mood, and features a collection of songs that deal with universal grassland themes; the nature of man, the delicate balance of man and nature, and the temptations of modernity. Produced by Robin Haller and Matteo Scumaci. Featuring a grassland dueling-banjos style duet with mult iple-Grammy award winner Bela Fleck plus bonus mix by the late French producer (and Mamer admirer) Hector Zazou. CHARLIE WOOD FLUTTER AND WOW CD ARCHER RECORDS JA ZZ A superbly crafted record, Flutter and Wow, is a testament to Wood’s broad musical palate, brooding lyrical prowess, and prodigious abilities as a stylist. Flutter and Wow (Archer Records), Wood's latest album, is foremost a testament to his ability as a tunesmith, but also reveals a deep understanding of works from other notable practitioners of the craft. It features breathtaking originals from the Memphis-based key specialist, plus covers from artists like Costello, Waits, and Cohen. Produced by Norah Jones collaborator Adam Levy, the record is a paragon of tastefulness, showcasing Wood's broad musical palate, brooding lyrical prowess, and prodigious abilities as a stylist. Matt Flinner Trio Music Du Jour CD COMPASS COUNTRY “[Matt Flinner] blurs the lines between jazz and bluegrass, traditional and avant-garde.” - The Associated Press One of the hottest mandolin players on the acoustic scene, multi-instrumentalist Matt Flinner joins trio partners, Ross Martin (guitar) and Eric Thorin (bass) in an experiment gone right. The Music du Jour project began in 2006, says Flinner, when the three performers challenged each other to write music for that evening’s show. “The only rule was that the music be started, completed and performed all in one day. And of course we had no idea what would happen. By 6pm it was time to stop writing and start teaching each other our songs.” Three tours and 60 new tunes later, the trio selected some of their favorites for this CD. “I believe we grew a great deal as writers, musicians, friends and human bei ngs,” says Flinner. And through it all “we knew we were onto something exciting.” Tracks: Inferno Reel / In the Golden Zone / Stomp Hat / Cobalt / Half Moondog / Tell Me One More Time / The Blossom / Falling Rock / Free Circus / Meager Hero / Atomic City / Spur of the Moment

SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE is the rare recording Trevor Watts made of the group’s first public appearance, at London’s 100 Club on May 22nd, 1972. Two extended sets of continuous collective improvisation comprise this full length CD release; our first opportunity to experience this leaderless ensemble of British jazz greats with their special musical personalities summoned to create a group music with robust telepathic energy, as informed by the great history of Modern Jazz. Their cauldron of emotionally extroverted playing, as it boils over a torrent of exuberant double drumming from John Stevens and Phil Seamen, is a sheer wonder for the ear to behold. Moreover, such exhilaration is preserved in a dynamic recording that allows the listener to bear witness to this once in a lifetime event. Our remastering care was guided by the sonic requirements for the music itself, which was captured as an analogue tape recording. Including personal reflections from Trevor Watts, and 100 Club concert photographs by Jak Kilby, SPLINTERS: SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE guarantees an experience to be filed under essential. Tracks: One In A Hundred / Two In A Hundred

Swelter Songs of Distance CD CORAZONG ROCK/POP Prior to even recording their debut album Swelter already supported such luminaries as The Frames (IE), The Veils (UK), Cracker (USA) and Bettie Serveert (NL). Extremely tasteful, melancholic guitar pop, that’s how Holland’s main music magazine Oor described the music of indie band Swelter after seeing them in concert. What takes most band years, Swelter managed to achieve in its first year of existence; performing on big stages for large audiences through a series of high profile gigs supporting such luminaries as The Frames (IE), The Veils (UK), Cracker (USA) and Bettie Serveert (NL). These series of gigs made Swelter not only a hot and much in demand live act. It also resulted in a lot of exposure in the (Dutch) national press and airplay on the main national radio stations. Quite an achievement without an album, or even a single release! Swelter debut album ‘Songs of Distance’ was recorded in various Dutch studios. Friends added tasteful contributions on mellotron, accordion, Hammond organ and grand piano. Belgian studio wizard Werner Pensaert (known from his work with amongst others Manic Street Preachers and Johan) mixed the record in The Motor Music Studios (Admiral Freebee, Zita Swoon etc.) and the next step, the final mastering of the album was done by the very capable and also Belgian, Uwe Teichert a studio ace whose credits include Nova Star and Deus. And the artwork is brilliant too! Tracks: Wait & See / Still Not Won / The Strain We’re Under / We Both Know / Saddest Meal / Refugee / Something Worth Repeating / You’re In The Last Frame / She Wants To Be A Mother / Love Is Not For Hypocrites / Let Me Sleep

Baka In The Forest Baka In The Forest CD MARCH HARE MUSIC WO RLD Thousands of years of survival as hunter-gatherers depended on powerful night-time ritual singing ("Yelli") by Baka Pygmy women. This CD is a rare glimpse into an exquisite disappearing musical culture. Five sisters are heard here singing into the rainforest creating a delicate and skillful weave of sound. Contrasting with the communal songs are some exquisite tracks of solo forest yodelling, extraordinary for their combination of relaxation and precision. Water drumming and gentle forest made instruments are also heard against the ambient insect soaked night. 20 years of visiting the same extended family, playing music together, and developi ng trust and friendship has made Su Hart's unique recordings possible. Juliet Kelly Licor ice Kiss CD PURPLE STILETTO Putting the Glamour back into Jazz! Juliet updates the sound of the classic jazz divas with a modern, sassy twist - Glam Jazz! With two critically acclaimed albums of original material under her belt – Aphrodite’s Child (2003) and Delicious Chemistry (2005) - Juliet now presents her third and most ambitious album, Licorice Kiss. Referencing influences as diverse as Soul II Soul, the Eurythmics and Soft Cell, she offers up her own take on some 80’s classics alongside her own creations that range from toe-tapping grooves to latin-inflected ballads. From the lilting groove of the lyrically sensual opener “Licorice Kiss” to the rock guitar solo on f inal track “Destiny”, Licorice Kiss is an album that spans a wide range of moods and influences. These include the reggae-tinged rhythm of “I’m Still Here”, a latin-influenced version of the Soul II Soul classic “Back To Life” and Juliet’s drum-and-bass flavoured call to end the obsession with celebrity entitled “Ordinary Lives”. Juliet invites us to luxuriate in softer, more tender moments with “Mutual Attraction” (a tale of forbidden love with a subtle tango-esque groove) and her take on the Eurythmics seminal track “Here Comes the Rain Again” allows us to experience the rich tones of her beautifully haunting vocals. Tracks: Licorice Kiss / Tainted Love / I’m Still Here / Back To Life / Ordinary Lives / Serendipity / Mutual Attraction / Never Really Knew You / Here Comes The Rain Again / Destiny

MJ Hibbett & T he Validators Regardez, Ecoutez et Repetez CD ARTISTS AGAINST SUCCESS

Witty, poppy, thought provoking songs about real life in your thirties and beyond from one of the UK's best loved underground bands. After ten years of combining rock and roll adventures - massive internet viral hits ("Hey Hey 16K"), live sessions on Radio One, sell-out shows at The Edinburgh Fringe, rave reviews in Rolling Stone and over seventy gigs a year - with having proper jobs and children, MJ Hibbett & The Validators finally combine the two in this, their most polished and pop album yet. With songs about daft dancing, dieting, hen nights, bosses, love at the computer keyboard and really wishing you could get home to bed they're singing about real life as it is lived today. Combined with a newfound pop sheen and their usual wit and tunefulness this could be the album that takes MJ Hibbett & The Validators out into a much bigger audience. Loom Underneath

CD BRAMBUS A smashing debut CD of a not so young band, which presents a musical crossover of folk, rock, songwriting, soul and outstanding lyrics. A wonderful addition to the Brambus catalogue, in the Songwriter/Rock/Soul area, 'Loom' is the band in which singer, guitarist and songwriter Manu Olowu finds herself at home. Her songs arise out of those times when everything goes wrong, when life is shaken to the core, or when the heart beats faster than usual. Mostly they're concerned with love. What it is, what it isn't, how it ought to be, could be, should be, or aspires to be, how it can be rejected and dying or, immortal, generate wave after wave. The material is also concerned with the disagreeable; the scandal-mongers, the ignorant, the liars and the suicides. But in every case it's the feelings which count. Feelings; without which life would be dull, and without which there would be no music in the world. Feeling is also what drives the musicians to accompany these songs, to give them wings or make them bite. Feelings, too, are the reason these four musicians have stayed true to each other, year in, year out; naturally enough, not without passing musical affairs and supportive sub-plots, leaps in the dark and strange escapades. Certainly, it would be a shame if musicians such as Mario Söldi on drums, Michael Hutter on bass, and Jo Eberhard on guitar and mandolin were not out there in the restless world of music; and of course Manu Olowu, too, has her own stories on the boil. But most of the time they're together. Yes, as is so well said, 'don't change a winning team! Open your ears - this is a special debut album. Tracks: Field Of Flowers / On My Way / Life Is / Forbidden / Holes To Fill / And Still / Seaweed / Soul Inside / Rabbit / Two Damned Things / If This Is The Way / Soul Doctor / Sleeping Deeply / Don’t You Think / Underneath

Julian Arguelles and The Frankfurt Radio Big Band Momenta CD BASHO JA ZZ Momenta is Argüelles’ return to big band and the culmination of his long association with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band. Featuring stunning pianist Gwilym Simcock. Recorded live, Momenta is Argüelles’ return to big band and the culmination of his long association with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band. Argüelles invited the tour de force of British jazz, the prodigiously gifted pianist Gwilym Simcock on this big band outing. “Julian was one of my musical heroes when I first got into jazz” says Simcock, “so it’s a huge honour and pleasure for me to play Julian’s music and work with such wonderful musicians as the HR Big Band.” One of the most widely acclaimed artists on the British scene, Simcock is revered for his “glittering solos”, “harmonic sophistication”, “intricate improvisation”, “rhythmic agility” and “technical accomplishments”. Yet, says Argüelles, “aside from Gwilym’s exceptional playing technique and sense of harmony, it’s the romanticism of his playing; his emotional quality that I most admire”. With that in mind, Argüelles wrote a brand new piece Barcelona 1936 – and rearranged his compositions specifically to feature Simcock's enormous skills. “Like all of my work, the main ingredient I want the listener to feel is one of emotion: sometimes I like to write complicated music, sometimes very simple music; interesting, joyful or dark, but whatever the mood or vibe, it’s the emotional quality I want to be in the forefront” Tracks: Barcelona / See My Dear / Phaedrus / Evan's Freedom Pass / Skull View / Hi Steve / Mish Mash
