President’s Preface Well, we are back to nearly normal, and no need for Plan B’s or another date. Let’s go with the flow, enjoying friendships and giving a helping hand. A helping hand especially needed at our stall For Spring into Tawa on 17 October, even one hour just gives someone time for a quick cuppa or sit down, it will be much appreciated. How are your ticket sales going? This is all profit for our Club as prizes have been generously donated, so we do need to do them justice. Remember all the profits go back into our community. Keep them moving and Frances has plenty more books. Don’t limit yourself to your original uptake. Set a personal challenge and be surprised! Bill Day is so enthusiastic about the Children’s Hospital. It was great to hear where it is up to, and the background to its’ beginnings. Still a long way to go but it is now a tangible image. Fantastic!! Our Club has contributed to this charity over the years. Well done! Our October Club meeting is a mystery meeting, but I can guarantee we’ll be having Fun, Food and Friendship. Take care and please give an hour or two where needed if at all possible, like the proverb says: “Many Hands Make Light Work” In Friendship Melva Raffle Tickets All sold and unsold raffle tickets/butts need to be returned at our October Meeting. If you are looking for a bit of inspiration or motivation Bill Day is your answer. Bill is the chair of the Wellington Hospital Foundation and it was with much pleasure he was our guest speaker at the September meeting. Bill has been heavily involved in community activities for many years. He is presently a board member for Life Flight Trust, was involved in Wellington Free Ambulance, Community Trusts and in 2015 was awarded a Queens Honour. Bill boldly approached Mark Dunajtshik (philanthropist) inviting him to invest in the rebuild of the Wellington Regional Childrens Hospital. Mark obliged committing 50 million dollars to the project. However more money is still required and this has been promised though Government grants, the CCDHB and public donations for which Bill is responsible. The new hospital will service a population of over 1 million and include medical and surgical wards. The goal is to have everything in the hospital brand new. A ‘link bridge’ will connect this with other hospital facilities and buildings. The construction is three stories, includes 151 beds, configured so families can stay with their children during the time in hospital. It is specifically designed to with stand a very strong earthquake, built on a ball bearing foundation concept, able to sway 1.8 metres. Weta digital have been involved with a theme which will be evident over the three floors. The Edward V11 Memorial Hospital was the first children’s hospital in NZ, opened 107 years ago.

Frances Burrus introduces Hilde Godenho to club members before being inducted.
