March 2019 New public art projects unveiled The City of Coachella dedicated two public art projects in February, and both are already attracting crowds. Etherea, a transparent sculpture, stands at the intersection of Cesar Chavez Street and 6 th Street and serves as a beacon for those visiting Coachella’s downtown. Created by Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi for the 2018 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Etherea is inspired by Neoclassical and Baroque architecture. Reaching more than 50 feet into the air, Tresoldi designed it to be a place for contemplation. The second new art work, What Lifts Your Wings - Coachella, is a mural inviting viewers to go beyond observing and become part of the painting. Coachella Wings, by internationally known street artist Kelsey Montague, can be found on the walls outside Coachella City Hall at 1515 6 th Street. The work features a pair of colorful wings with space between them where people can pose for snapshots.

New public art projects unveiled

The City of Coachelladedicated two public artprojects in February, and bothare already attracting crowds. Montague, whose winged murals haveappeared in San Diego, New York andAustralia, encourages people to sharetheir photos with the mural on socialmedia using the hashtag#whatliftsyou. Coachella is home to nearly two dozenmurals, with the majority in the PuebloViejo area downtown. The city is alsohosting two Desert X 2019 installations– including one by Coachella artist Armando Lerma.

Housing and transportation plans move forwardA proposed project in Pueblo Viejo could bringaffordable housing and more transportation options toCoachella. The city is partnering with Chelsea Investment Corporation,Sunline Transit Agency, and the County of Riverside to bringaffordable housing closer to jobs, public transit, andcommunity amenities. The proposed project would include105 apartments, a Sunline transit center, sheltered bicycleracks, commercial space, and a community center. The project would offer a number of environmentally friendlyfeatures, including net-zero energy buildings, desert friendlylandscaping and a layout that encourages people to walk orride bicycles. The City of Coachella and its partners are applying for grants

through Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities (AHSC) andTransformative Climate Communities (TCC). A meeting was held in the Coachella Library building on January 29th to shareinformation about the project and solicit feedback from residents of Coachella.Additional meetings are being planned for March and details will be posted on the citywebsite, Coachella.org, and on Facebook.com/YourCoachella.

ESL classes coming to Coachella Library

Coachella residents can now take advantage ofnew learning opportunities in the city. College ofthe Desert is offering English as a SecondLanguage courses at the new Coachella Library. Class offerings for the Spring 2019 semesterinclude non-credit English as a Second Language(ESLN) Foundations and Level 1 classes, which aredesigned to improve English reading, writing,listening, and speaking skills. “College of the Desert is excited to partner with thecity of Coachella to expand access and opportunityfor adult learners,” said Dr. Lindsay Vance, Directorof Non-credit and Adult Basic Education Programsat the College. “This new location provides studentsand instructors with a modern environment forlearning and opportunities for students and their families to connect to the manyservices and resources offered at this branch.”

The ESLN Foundation courses are free; however, students do pay a $20 healthand service fee each semester. Prospective students can apply in person by visiting College of the Desert’s Indio orPalm Desert campuses, or by calling (760) 776-7348 to speak with a non-creditenrollment specialist.

Bring yourappetite toMarch foodtruck festival Get ready for a tasty newevent rolling in toCoachella this spring. TheCoachella Food Truck Parkwill set up at the corner of 4thStreet & Vine Avenue inPueblo Viejo during threeweekends in March.

A variety of foods from local and regional vendors, along with drinks such as local craftbeers and chavelas, will be available at the event. Art displays, music and otherperformances will entertain visitors as they enjoy the casual atmosphere.

The Coachella Food Truck Park will be open March 8-10, March 15-17 and March22-24 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Make plans now to stop by and check it out!
