Accommodation Options

Several options are available for students including rental accommodation, shared accommodation and

home stay. Most international students prefer to

share rental accommodation to reduce costs. UNI

staff can assist students to find accommodation

although accommodation is available easily. The beginning of each term is a busy time. Students

should request assistant to find accommodation two weeks prior to arrival. For further information

contact us at [email protected]. The approximate

cost of Home Stay living in Adelaide is between

AUD$150 to AUD$200 per week. UNI keeps a list of real estate agents and home stay providers to make

the necessary arrangements. Students are required to make a request for this service at least two weeks

in advance (conditions and charges apply). For

further information contact us at info@uni-

world.org.

Course Advice and Enrolment Assistance

Students are introduced to the academic staff of UNI and to their Course Co-ordinator. Students will also

be provided with course advice and assistance at enrolment.

Orientation Program

An orientation program is conducted before classes

and is compulsory for all newly-arrived international students. The program includes an introduction to

UNI service and facilities as well as an introduction to Australian Culture, Society and life. Students are

also introduced to the academic culture and rules of

UNI which are considered necessary for successful

study.

Counselling service

The UNI Counselling service is free. Confidential and

voluntary counsellors help students in understanding

the way UNI works. These counsellors know who to

refer you for solving problems and dealing with difficult personal situations.

Overseas Students Health Cover (OSHC)

All international students must have current health

insurance while studying in Australia. This is a Visa regulation. The only exceptions are Swedish and

Norwegian students, who will be required to pay up front for their medical service.

Medicare

All permanent Australian residents are entitled to receive free treatment as a public (Medicare) patient

in a public hospital. This includes free treatment by a doctor and includes treatment by specialists where

necessary. Subsidised service is available from optometrists and dentists for specified services.

Emergencies

In an emergency, where there is a danger to life or

a crime is in progress you should contact the police, fire department or ambulance by dialling 000 from

any telephone. This is a free call in emergencies only.

Fire safety in the home

In South Australia, legislation is in place to make

smoke alarms compulsory for all residential buildings. Most fire-related deaths result from the

inhalation of toxic gases rather than from direct

contact with flame or exposure to heat. Correctly

located smoke alarms in your home give early warning of fire. This will provide you with time which

may be vital to your survival.

Beach safety

Be careful when swimming in Australian water.

Some parts of the coast have powerful currents and tides. Shark attacks are rare but sometimes do

occur. It is safest to swim at popular beaches. Areas marked by red and yellow flags are patrolled by surf

life-savers. Never mix alcohol with survival.

Students with School Age Dependants

Students should add a further 20% per annum for living expenses if they have one child (plus AUD

8000 per annum for the cost of schooling) if the

children are of school age.
