Traditional Cigarettes

In our new products kit, we have the Marlboro cigarettes and new

varieties that have come on to the market.

Marlboro Eighty-Threes are slightly longer than the traditional

cigarette.

Marlboro Black—aside from the name and package design

(which may be targeting the African American crowd) these look

very similar in appearance to your traditional cigarette. Outside of

the package, the cigarette paper wrapping is not black in color, it

looks just like a traditional cigarette.

Marlboro Edge—aside from the packaging looking different from

other Marlboro cigarettes, when you open the package, the

cigarettes inside look like any other Marlboro cigarette. There is

no noticeable difference in appearance. There is however, the

visible advertising difference that the Edge has a ‘bold smooth

flavor’ as compared to the “bold flavor” seen advertised on the

Marlboro Black.

Traditional Cigarettes

In our new products kit, we have the Camel Crush cigarette, which

came to the market after the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and

Control Act went into effect.

Research has shown that flavored tobacco products appeal to

youth. At an attempt to curb youth smoking rates, the 2009

Tobacco Control Act banned all flavored cigarettes, leaving the

only legal flavors as menthol and traditional tobacco.

Camel Crush— The camel crush cigarette came on to the market

after the 2009 Tobacco Control Act. It is the first (and only known)

cigarette that changes it’s flavor from a traditional tobacco flavor to

a menthol flavor midway through. There is a capsule in the filter

(indicated by highlight marks circling around the camel image),

and when you press this capsule, it releases a menthol flavor into

the cigarette. Seeing that flavors are banned from cigarettes and

the only exception is menthol, these cigarettes may appeal to a

youth and young adult audience.

Cigars, Cigarillos and Little Cigars

The 2009 Tobacco Control Act banned all flavored cigarettes,

leaving the only legal flavors as menthol and traditional tobacco.

However, the flavor ban did not extend to cigars, cigarillos and

little cigars.

Cigars— Traditional cigars are larger in size than what we see

popular with youth today. The cigars that are popular with the

younger crowd are the little cigars and cigarillos. One difference

between cigars and cigarettes is that cigars are tobacco wrapped

in a tobacco leaf, where cigarettes are tobacco wrapped in paper.

Due to this difference, cigars are taxed and classified differently

than traditional cigarettes.

Little Cigars— In the photo to the left, you can see a package of

little cigars with a grape flavor. Little cigars typically have 20 in a

pack (similar to a pack of cigarettes, which contain 20 cigarettes)

and their size is also similar. As you can see in the picture, the

little cigar is a little longer than the traditional cigarette. However,

the circumference is the same for each.

Cigarillos— These are pictured on the next page, and include a 2

pack that can be purchased for $1—with the flavor tropical fusion.

The other 2 foil wrapped cigarillos are white grape and grape,

these can be sold for 69 cents or 2 for $1 in some retail locations.

These are a smaller cigar, and have more of a thicker feel to them

like your traditional cigar.

Tipped Cigars—pictured on the next page, if you’ve ever seen a

filter tip on the ground, this tipped cigar is most likely where that

tipped filter is coming from.

Smokeless Tobacco

The two main types of smokeless tobacco used in the United

States are chewing tobacco and snuff. Chewing tobacco comes in

three forms: loose leaf, plug and twists.

Snuff is a finely cut or ground tobacco that can be dry or moist.

Snuff is commonly used by placing the tobacco between the

cheek and gum. The most popular form of snuff is moist snuff

(pictured) which is kept in tins or plastic cans.

Skoal Long Cut—this form of tobacco is known as moist snuff.

It’s appearance and feel is somewhat similar to wet ground coffee.

Chewing tobacco does come in flavors. This one is a berry blend,

but there are many other flavors available on the market.

Smokeless Tobacco

*Snuff may also come in small teabag-like pouches.

Copenhagen Pouches—(pictured)

These pouches were created as an alternative to your traditional

“spit tobacco” where you commonly spit the tobacco out into a

bottle or on the ground when you are finished. With pouches, you

place a pouch between your cheek and gum, remove the pouch

and throw it away when you are finished. *Pouches still contain

tobacco and come with the same health risks as traditional

chewing tobacco.

Skoal Snus—(pictured on next page)

Snus (sounds like goose) is a moist powder tobacco that is

packaged in a small pouch (similar to the material used for tea

bags). Users place a single snus pouch in their upper lip and keep

it there for a few minutes up to several hours. The manufacturers

recommend keeping the pouch in for no longer than 30 minutes.

Once finished, users simply remove the pouch and dispose of it.

Snus is a spit-free smokeless product that is sold in a variety of

flavors and brands. (also pictured are Camel Snus)

Camel Snus—(pictured on next page)

Camel Snus is “sold cold” and kept in a refrigerator until it is sold.

R.J. Reynolds boasts that its product is stored at 36 to 44 degrees

until it is sold—to ‘seal in freshness’. It is sold in four flavors, and

each tin contains 15 pouches.

Hookah Tobacco

*Hookah tobacco is used with a hookah pipe (not pictured). We did not purchase a hookah/water pipe or the special coals used with

the pipe for the new products kit. Most hookah/water pipes cost upwards of $100.

FACT: 1 hour session of hookah can be the same as smoking 100 cigarettes.

A hookah is a water pipe used to smoke tobacco, usually sweetened and flavored tobacco. The tobacco in hookahs can have

additives such as honey and molasses. Hookah tobacco is a moist tobacco (as pictured on the next page).

The tobacco is sold in a variety of flavors including watermelon, peach, strawberry, papaya, lemon mint, mint chocolate, spearmint,

cola, mimosa, pina colada, cappuccino and even blueberry muffin.

Hookah tobacco is sold by independent companies and local shops and is easy to purchase online. We purchased our hookah for the

new products kit, online. One brand of hookah tobacco is included in our collection in 2 different flavors: ‘exotic bubble gum’ and

‘exotic candy’ (pictured on the next page).

Electronic Smoking Devices (ESD)

E-Hookah (pictured)

One time use disposable device. An e-hookah is the electronic

version of the traditional hookah. When you inhale from the tip of

the device, a flavored aerosol is pulled from the chamber into the

lungs.

Electronic Smoking Devices (ESD)

1st Generation E-Cigarettes (pictured)

There are 4 generations of ‘e-cigarettes’. The first generation are

your ‘cigalikes’, these are most commonly going to look like the

traditional combustible cigarette. There is an aerosol in the device

that when you inhale through the hole in the mouthpiece (the filter

of these shown have a hole for inhaling) you receive a dose of

aerosol more often than not containing nicotine.

NJOY (pictured) is a one time use disposable device. The end of

this product lights up orange (similar to a traditional cigarette when

lit) when you inhale.

*The makers of this NJOY e-cigarette have evolved their company

to include full scale vape pens that include e-liquid in a multitude

of flavors. Their website is worth checking out to see how this

product that started as “traditional king and light” flavor variety

now includes an array of youth attractive flavors and electronic

smoking devices.

Mark Ten (ties to Marlboro/Philip Morris) is a first generation

e-cigarette, as well was the Vuse E-cigarette (RJ Reynolds, mak-

er of the popular Camel cigarette). Both are pictured in the follow-

ing pages.

Mark Ten E-Cigarette (pictured)

Rechargeable. The Mark Ten e-cigarette currently is available in 2

flavors: traditional tobacco and menthol. Both are included in our

new products collection.

This product boasts “4 draw technology” in their advertising (see

photo on next page) and as you can see the top of this device has

4 holes to inhale the aerosol.

There are 3 parts to this e-cigarette (as seen on the next page).

The bottom part of the device is the battery and twists off from the

top part of the device, which is the mouthpiece with the “4 draw

technology”. The third part to this e-cigarette is the USB charger.

To recharge the Mark Ten, you twist the base of the battery into

opening of the USB stick (opposite side of the computer

connection).

Mark Ten XL E-Cigarette

*The newer version of this product is named Mark Ten XL, and

comes in a variety of flavors: Winter Mint, Fusion, Menthol and

Classic.

Mark Ten XL boasts longer lasting cartridges and batteries,

compared to the original Mark Ten (pictured). We do not have a

Mark Ten XL in our collection.

Electronic Smoking Devices (ESD)

Vuse E-Cigarette (pictured)

Rechargeable. The Vuse e-cigarette ‘starter kit’ (pictured)

currently is available in 2 flavors: traditional tobacco and menthol.

Both are included in our new products collection. *There are also

other flavors of refill cartridges available for Vuse.

There are 3 parts to this e-cigarette (as seen on the next page).

The bottom part of the device is the battery and twists off from the

top part of the device, which is the flavor cartridge/ mouthpiece.

The third part to this e-cigarette is the USB charger.

*Vuse also has replacement flavor cartridges that you can buy

after you have purchased the device itself. The flavor cartridge

serves as the mouthpiece on their product, and essentially when

you are finished with the cartridge you dispose of it and replace it

with another cartridge. Flavors for the Vuse e-cigarette cartridge

refills include: Berry (which we have in our collection), Crèma,

Chai, Mint, Menthol and Original.

To recharge the Vuse, you twist the base of the battery into

opening of the USB stick (opposite side of the computer

connection).

The tobacco industry, possibly in an attempt to clean up it’s past

image, started marketing e-cigarettes, and then started using the

term “vapor product” and slogans such as “It’s not smoke, it’s

vapor” .The terminology of vape, vaping and e-cig is most likely

coming from the tobacco industry.

All 3 major tobacco manufacturers own a brand of electronic

smoking devices; Lorillard/RJ Reynolds and Phillip Morris..

Electronic Smoking Devices (ESD)

2nd Generation E-Cigarettes—

Second generation electronic cigarettes usually look like pens or

laser pointers, and are considerably larger than ‘cig-a-likes’. When

using a typical second generation e-cigarette, the user would need

to manually press the ‘fire’ button while they inhale.

“Vape Pen” (pictured)

Rechargeable and refillable.

There are 3 parts to this “Vape Pen” (pictured). The bottom part of

the device is the battery and twists off from the middle part of the

device, which is known as the tank or chamber. The middle part of

the device attaches to the mouthpiece. The base of the

mouthpiece fits inside the top of the tank/chamber.

To recharge the device, you twist the base of the battery into the

opening of an USB. *This device did not come with a rechargeable

USB piece. Most of the USB used are universal, and we noticed

that the battery for this device can be charged using the Vuse

USB.

This pen was bought in two parts: the battery and mouthpiece/

chamber. It does not come pre-filled. The user would purchase a

separate ‘e-juice” to fill up the tank/ chamber. To fill, the user

would take off the mouthpiece and pour e-liquid into the tank/

chamber. *E-Liquid (other terms include E-Juice or Vape Juice) is

bought separately to fill the tank/chamber.

The cords in the tank/chamber soak up the e-liquid, and the user

pushes the button on the battery to heat up the liquid in the

chamber, which turns into an aerosol that the user inhales.

Electronic Smoking Devices (ESD)

E-juice is used with refillable vape pens such as the one pictured on the previous page.

“E-Juice” (pictured)

E-Liquid (other terms include E-Juice or Vape Juice) is bought separately to fill the chamber. This liquid can be sold in many

quantities, flavors and doses of nicotine. The particular brand that we purchased (pictured) claims to have 0mg of nicotine in the

bottle. However on the ingredients label, nicotine is listed as an ingredient and there is a warning label about nicotine. The amount

of nicotine (most commonly measured as mg) in each product varies by brand. This particular brand comes in 0mg, 12mg and

24mg. Without regulation in place for e-liquids, it is difficult to determine if that measurement of mg is per bottle, per drop etc.

For most of the last 5 years, without FDA regulation, we have had what the manufacturers tell us about their products. The FDA

Deeming Regulation (effective August 2016), now requires manufacturers to list ingredients and if a product contains nicotine it will

have proper labeling as such. Prior to this ruling, e-liquids were not required to list ingredients or provide clear labeling if the

product contained nicotine or not. *Flavors, of e-liquids currently are not regulated by the FDA.

E-liquids may be flavored and come in a variety of youth appealing flavors. Pictured below is the grape flavor.
