We (members of the church council) have not quite got used to the idea of our spire needing significant work doing on it, but are more than cheered by the good news that our lovely building will soon have at least a new roof (done in two stages), grants in various forms and other people’s generosity, not to mention the work of our tireless Funding Team put us in a happy position at the start of this new year. Bit by bit Stuart and I are moving our ‘worldly goods’ to Ancaster in time for my work here to end on January 26 th . Moving is nightmare……………and as we sift through papers needed/ not needed reading them underlines the truly blessed time we have had living amongst you all. I cannot stress enough how supportive, not only the church teams of Lay Ministers and church councils have been to me, and they of course remain to serve the churches in this Benefice and the commu- nities that surround them, they need all the support and prayers you can offer them as they come under the wing of Revd Alison Healy as Priest in Charge here and Rector of the Leadenham /Brant Broughton group. The Churchwardens in each parish will be your first point of contact for enquir- ies regarding Weddings, Baptisms and Funerals plus all the other questions that crop up from time to time. The photocopier remains and I know the Churchwar- dens in Caythorpe are planning its future, I shall certainly miss meeting people at our door holding a passport or some other document and needing a copy………… so watch this space.

I can hear voices of people I have loved along the way. I see faces in the darkness of the night: all the ones I wept for, prayed for, embraced with all the love I found deep within my soul. You will stay in my heart forever……………’ and An-caster is not so very far away.

With my love and prayers, June. The will be no Friday Club in January or February but look out for the Good Fri-day Hot Cross Fun Day later in the year.

Bishop's letter for Parish Magazines: January 2013 When I lived in central London, as I did until moving to Lincoln just over a year ago, the pace of life always seemed hectic. We seemed to be constantly busy, struggling to be heard over traffic noise, battling past thousands of people on every street. What a contrast to life in much of the Diocese of Lincoln. There are many good things about living in the Diocese, but one of them which still has me catching my breath at times is the sky. I marvel at its bright, azure blue; I’m captivated by the wide open expanse of it – something you never see in the centre of a city. Most of all, though, I am in awe at the sheer wonder and the beauty of the night sky filled with countless stars. In the city, of course, you never glimpse the stars because of the street lights. Here, I find the night sky endlessly fascinating. Sometimes illuminated by the moon and planets, sometimes not; sometimes constellations I recognise, some-times not. But always, I am struck by the contrast between light and darkness. You and I live in a world which can seem very dark at times, whether through war, illness, relationships under stress, worries about work and paying the bills In Jesus, the greatest light of all has come down to earth to shine in the dark places of our lives and in our world. He has come among us as the light which no darkness can ever put out. The season of Epiphany reminds us that, in Jesus, God revealed himself to the world. He made himself known in Jesus so that you and I have a glimpse of the true nature of God, and have a way of encountering and overcoming darkness in our lives. Epiphany is also the time when we remember the Wise Men, who risked much as they followed the star in the night sky. Like them, you and I are called to follow that light, to go wherever it may lead, and to look for glimpses of God’s pres-ence, so that the love of God might forever shine bright in the darkness places of our world.

"When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with their flock, the work of Christmas begins: to find the lost, to heal the broken, to feed the hungry, to release the prisoner, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among people, to make music in the heart." Howard Thurman

11 Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year to ALL

REMEMBER – REMEMBER 3rd Nov.2012 Caythorpe and Frieston Sports and Social Club treated the village to a £1000 worth of Fireworks display, which proved once again a great success. A big thank you to everybody who helped to make it a special evening. Special thanks must go to :- The Firework team of Adam Jackson, Leigh Dixon, Michael Sharp and Adam Miller. Our local Fire Officer Neil Fritzsche for attending and helping to make it a safe environment for everybody To Richard Dix for organising the stewarding and first aid helpers. To Richard Welby, MC and music provider. To Martin Clarke and his bucket brigade. To Deanna Hammond and her gang in providing warm and much needed re-freshments. On behalf of LIVES Richard and Lisa Welby sold glow sticks and made £ 27.50 The biggest thanks of the evening goes to YOU who turned up and generously gave £ 723 in the buckets. This was greatly received and appreciated, especially in these hard times.

Paul Jackson. Chairman Caythorpe Sports and Social Club

In March 2011 I published the final episode in my account of our boating adventures on the Canal du Midi. Since then Captain, CCBW and 1st Lieutenant have not been totally shore-bound. A number of readers have kindly commented that they miss the articles and have encouraged me to continue. So appropriately flattered that my efforts are appreciated at least by some I will continue.

Alsace Lorraine - Canal de la Marne au Rhin Since our exploration of the Canal du Midi in 2008 we have not been en-tirely land bound. In 2009 Captain and CCBW had decided to see what the UK had to offer in the way of boating pleasure and hired a small mo-tor boat on the Norfolk Broads for a week. One thing is certain the Broads are Not The Canal du Midi. Typical English summer weather, strong winds, horizontal rain and near arctic temperatures for much of the week made it a memorable experience and one not to be repeated! In 2010 we hired a narrow boat for a long weekend from a base in Rugby and took No 2 son and his family for a trip. Driving a 60 foot long pencil down the canal is a very different experience and narrow boating is defi-nitely a rather anti-social pastime as there is little room at the stern where the helmsman stands. The result is you stand there waggling the tiller all alone whilst the rest of the company are either down below, or sixty feet ahead of you in the bow, out of sight and out of mind, and if it is raining very wet! Captain, CCBW and 1st Lt also spent Easter Weekend 2011 on a narrow boat hired in Market Harborough thanks to the retirement gift of CCBW’s employers of a voucher for canal boat hire. This trip was blessed by ex-tremely warm weather and as the boat was not so long, only 45 ft, less socially divisive. Friday, Saturday – Outward Bound However, now we are off on the real thing again. This time we are going to Alsace- Lorraine in northern France. Captain and CCBW left home and drove across to Leicestershire to col-lect 1st Lt from his cottage. We planned to circumnavigate London on the south side to avoid the congestion at the Dartford crossing. Good idea in theory – but Bank Holiday weekend traffic and disgusting weather caused considerable delays.. However we eventually arrived at the same Travelodge that we had stayed in on our way to France in 2007. Not a lot had changed in the intervening years, even the puddles outside seemed familiar. We toured the scenic service station, had a coffee at exorbitant price and

Page 17: New Produced and Sponsored by St. Vincent’s Church, Caythorpe, …parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Files/Parish/58/Jan13.pdf · 2013. 6. 29. · Produced and Sponsored by St. Vincent’s

17 Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year to ALL

then went back for a little lie down. Later in the evening we went out and found a pub in a nearby village where we got a pretty decent meal. Up early next morning after a fitful night. Our rest had not be helped by some very giggly girls returning at about 1 o’clock in the morning, later CCBW heard a car which must have had 13 doors, at least that was the number that were slammed shut! In 2007 we had got onto the Motorway from this Travelodge with ease. This time, however, 1st Lt’s Satnav had other ideas. After a very scenic and rural drive through wooded countryside we got to the main road and sailed down into Dover. I know we have been this way before, but only once and that was 4 years ago, so it was impressive to be greeted by name at the P&O Check-In. 1st Lt spoiled Captain’s feeling that he had arrived as an international traveller by pointing out that a number plate recognition camera probably had something to do with it. Yet again the extra £10 for priority boarding was worth every penny. Af-ter a short half hour wait we were straight on the ferry and first in the queue for breakfast. In fact we had to wait as the fried eggs were not ready. The nice chatty girl serving breakfast does the Dover-Calais-Dover trip twice every day! Even though it was bank Holiday Saturday the ferry was surprisingly un-crowded – perhaps the economically strait-ened times were having an effect. It was a smooth crossing and we were soon finding our way back to the car. Typically the driver of the car in front of us did not turn up so we were delayed in getting off. There is al-ways one who spoils the party! Once clear of Calais we were on the A26 and through the tolls and sailing down almost deserted roads – most unlike the M25 of the day before.. Captain and 1st Lt took it in turns to drive, doing a couple of hours or so each. 1st Lt’s Satnav skilfully guided us along the route – but we found his constant reminders to ‘Watch your Speed’ rather irksome so 1st Lt found out how to shut him up. We arrived at our destination (Hesse) at about 3.45pm. Hesse is a small village on the side of the Canal de la Marne au Rhin. It is about 60-70 km west of Strasbourg. The canal was dug in the 19th century and provides a link between the Parisian basin and the Rhine valley in a total length of 314 km. Our plan is to travel westwards from Hesse past Nancy and then explore south on the Vosges Canal along the valley of the R. Moselle, before turning round and coming back round the northern side of Nancy. Like all the best laid plans it …..! After a short wait we were checked in at the reception office. We have changed boat company this year from Locaboat to a company called Le Boat. Our friends from the Midi in 2008 have ‘disconnected’ from

Locaboat in a not entirely happy manner and out of loyalty, perhaps mis-placed, we do not want our favours to go to Locaboat. Check-in was conducted by a multi-lingual (French, German and English - a little) young lady who did not seem to be entirely up to speed. She was unaware that we had hired the boat for two weeks. It became appar-ent that our Westward Ho! plan was not feasible. Firstly the branch canal south of Nancy was still closed. It had closed in 2008 following a landslip and was now ‘closed until further notice’ - an ominous sounding phrase in any language! We could still go that way, taking the northern (50 km longer) northern route round Nancy but “M’sieur you will need to refuel after one week and we do not know where you can get fuel in that direction”, said with that infuriating but final Germano-Gallic shrug that invites no argument! Having loaded our baggage on board we checked out the facilities. A nice spacious saloon, small but adequate cooking area, a small double (sic) cabin aft for Captain and CCBW and a twin cabin forward for 1st Lt. plus two miniscule ‘bathrooms’. Having arranged the removal of the addi-tional and unwanted upper level single bunk from the aft cabin we checked out the electrics. The boat has 24 volt lighting and provision for shore supplied main as well. We did not have any adaptors for UK plugs to these mains outlet – nor could the boat yard supply them. 1st Lt and CCBW went off in the car to the nearby town, Sarrebourg, where there was a Le Clerc superstore to try and get some adaptors. Captain checked out the 24 volt Lighter Socket supply which we would need for phone and laptop charging and, most importantly, for 1st Lt’s breathing equipment he needs because of his sleep apnea. It does not work. Elec-trician comes from base and replaces fuse. 1st Lt and CCBW returned empty handed as far as adaptors are con-cerned. 1st Lt admits he has one at home but didn’t think he would need it! Captain grinds his teeth and decides silence is the safer option! We then sat in the evening sun watching the comings and goings and sipping wine before having supper - Macaroni cheese. We are miles from Italy but it is easy to make and we were all hungry after a very long day. While we were enjoying the evening the boat moored next to us decided to set off. They started their engine, slipped their moorings and pulled out into the Canal. Unfortunately their helmsman was so keen to get go-ing up the canal that he turned too early and their stern caught our bow and a rope dragged across getting jammed under the rubbing strip. A loud bang signalled the triumph of diesel power over the screws holding the rubbing strip and the other boat sailed on – apparently blissfully un-aware. No serious damage to us but a bit un-nerving. Finally to bed.

TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURE: Caythorpe Heath Lane Please note it will be necessary to impose a temporary restriction to all vehicular traf-fic on the road(s) detailed below. Adequate arrangements will be made to enable pedestrians to access premises in the affected area while works progress. REASON FOR CLOSURE: Footway construction & carriageway kerbing works LOCATION:Caythorpe Heath Lane PERIOD OF CLOSURE:3/1/2013 to 15/2/2013 (Closures to be implemented as & when required during this period) ALTERNATIVE ROUTE: Pottergate Road (Caythorpe), South Heath Lane & A607 Cliff Road (Fulbeck)

Getting to bed for Captain and CCBW was a tricky operation – there was only room for one at a time upright in the cabin and the bed (bunk) could only be entered from one side. However eventually we were settled when Captain realised he had left the lights on in the saloon. On trying to open the cabin door the handle came off! The vital part that turned the lock fell off on the far side and we were locked in! After a while of hammering the door and calling 1st Lt was roused and he collected a kitchen knife, and going on the upper deck was able to pass it through the rear window. Captain then removed the two screws holding the hasp and released the prisoners! This was almost the final straw for CCBW. Tired from the journey, con-cerned about the problems with fuel and now she had been trapped in her bedroom. It took several doses of our home made Damson Gin to calm her. Eventually we slept. Although disturbed by a heavy rainstorm in the wee small hours we got a good rest – Damson G probably helped! Captain and CCBW woke early. Over coffee and fags while 1st Lt was still asleep and thus could not argue we re-planned our route. We will go East towards and beyond Strasbourg. Le Boat have a base south of Strasbourg about 4-5 days away where we can refuel before turning round. This new route has some attraction for CCBW but also drawbacks. The attraction is that we will not go through the 15.4 metre (50’6”) deep lock which would have been the first we met had we been going towards Nancy and she had been worrying about since we first booked the boat. The drawback is there are two tunnels to go through – one 475 metres long and the other a daunting 2,326 metres. These two are the first obstacles we will encounter and then we have a boat lift to negotiate. However the plan was agreed on, then re-discussed with 1st Lt who had surfaced and agreed again. In truth 1st Lt did not have much option other than agreeing – it was 2 to 1! To date our marks for Le Boat have been ‘must try harder’!

SEEN IN THE GARDEN. The main news on this front is the arrival of Waxwings. They visit this country in cold weather hunting for berries. Mary thought she had seen two which I re-ported last time but we have since heard that a flock of about 50 have been seen in a field near Grantham. They can be recognised as they usually arrive in flocks but only in occasional winters looking for berries. They are buff brown in colour with a marked crest and brightly coloured wings notable for bright red wing tips hence its name. Last time, as things are so quiet in the garden, I filled this space recounting some of my experiences with birds at different times of my life. Nobody has objected, yet, so I will carry on. In 1938 we went to live on North Rona where my father was studying the great Atlantic Grey Seal which at the time was being severely persecuted. This island, 50 miles north of the Scottish mainland out in the Atlan-tic was then the biggest breeding colony in the world. My memory is, after a night in my bunk being sea sick while on the voyage, my father dragged me out and led me onto the deck. The Skipper had just blipped the horn and I found my-self looking at a massive 300ft cliff swarming with thousands of birds who at the sound of the horn had taken to the air and the whole place resounded to the screeching and cries of the birds all of different species, gulls, Kittiwakes, Puf-fins, Guillemots, Razorbills, Shags, Cormorants and Fulmar Petrels to name but a few. One soon forgot about seasickness at this sight, Those of you who have watched birds on cliffs by the sea will appreciate the excitement of this sight. One of our tasks was to ring young Fulmars which usually meant me being low-ered on a rope catching them and handing them up for ringing .. The trouble was that they would eject the most foul smelling yellow oily liquid all over me. Fa-ther was more concerned about not upsetting the little birds and I was left to go and find a pool where I could strip off and wash, but the smell would remain! Rona is one of the homes of the rare Leach's Fork tailed Petrel who bred in the walls of the ruined village last occupied in the l7thC. Sitting with one's back against the wall, one would hear the 'chirring' of the female on her nest. At night, about la,m they would begin their aerial dance and all you could hear was the whirring of their wings which would brush against you with a musty smell. This would last a couple of hours. In those days we did not have automatic flash and it was a question of taking photos in the hope you would catch a bird in it. Father did get quite a good one which I treasure. Not many lads will have had that ex-perience. Bill Oddie showed them in a Pictish Broch on Shetland on one of his nature programmes. Well, here is wishing all our readers a very Happy Christmas and a Guid New Year.

23 Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year to ALL

Caythorpe and District Garden Society The Society Christmas party was held on Dec 11th, and despite the frost and fog some 50 members made their way to Carlton Scroop village hall. The evening started with quizzes with a gardening theme, followed by a varied and delicious buffet supper brought by the members. We were then entertained by local folk singer Brian Dawson, with songs, poems and anecdotes with a Lincolnshire theme, and we rounded off the eve-ning with a visit from Father Christmas and his elf. A good time was had by all: many thanks to the committee for organising such an enjoyable evening. The Annual General Meeting will be held on Jan 8th. The February meet-ing will be on 12th, at 7:30 in Carlton Scroop village hall when Mark Schofield, manager of the ‘Life on the Verges’ project for the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, will give a talk on wildflower restoration for parks and gar-dens. Visitors (£2) and new members will be most welcome. Member-ship is excellent value at £12 for the year. Just come along or contact David Fidler on 01400 272630 for further information.

Clerk to the Council Mrs Andrea Smith 01400 272794 [email protected]

Parish Council News ……January 2013. New Parish Clerk…..The Parish Council unanimously approved the appoint-ment of Mrs Andrea Smith to the post of Parish Clerk which she takes over with immediate effect. Andrea along with her husband and young family has recently moved to Caythorpe. Andrea has been employed as Parish Clerk to the much larger parish of Waddington for the last seven years and in continuing in that role brings a wide range of experience and knowledge from which we can benefit. (Please note Andrea’s contact details shown at the head of this article). Parish Precept 2013/14…..As reported in the December edition your Parish Council is proposing to increase the level of precept by some 3% there having been no increase in the current financial year of 2012/13. If you would like to comment on the proposed level of increase or require more details of the budget that has been prepared please do not hesitate to contact any of the above Coun-cillors prior to the Parish Council meeting to be held on 9th January 2013 when the final decision will be taken. A note of thanks…..It is most appropriate at this time of year to thank all of those residents who either serve on the committees of our local organisations and clubs or give freely of their time in helping run the many successful events that are held through out the year. With out such support and commitment the parish would be a poorer place in which to live, many thanks on behalf of us all. Crime awareness……You will all have received a copy of the leaflet distrib-uted last month drawing our attention to the unwelcome increase in burglaries in the area. It is important that we are aware of the risks that we face and do our best to mitigate them. Forthcoming meeting ….The Parish Council next meets in the Village Hall on Wednesday 9th January 2013 at 7.15pm and residents are able to comment and draw matters to the attention of the Council and then to attend but not participate in the main meeting which will commence at 7.30pm.
