SPT Offshore – Independent Contractor

• Founded in 1997 by VolkerWessels and N-Sea (former Noordhoek diving)

• More then 450 suction piles (pipelay startup-, mooring- & foundation piles) installed in both oil and gas sector as in renewable sector

• Since June 2016 SPT Offshore is an independent EPCI contractor, specialized in suction pile foundations and anchors

How Do Suction Piles Work?

Suction Pile Installation

• Lower suction pile to seabed

• Self-weight penetration

• Discharge of water, causes difference in water pressure inside and outside

• Driving force on the top-plate (10 tonne / m2 / bar)

• Pump can be removed after installation

Why Suction Piles? – Compared to Monopiles

• Noise-free installation;• No risk of offshore installation operation being shut down• Saving costs on noise mitigation spread• Environmental friendly• BSH compliant

• Swift to install; only few hours compared to many hours of pile driving, reducing critical vessel time

• Easy to install; no hammer and pile handling spread required, only little offshore handling required, reducing costs and risks

• Foundations are easy to level by proportional control of the suction pumps; saving costs of levelling spread and separate TP lift

• Easy to fully decommission by reversing the suction process; environmental friendly and cost efficient solution

Suction Pile Suitability

Site investigation

• Site survey• CPT• Borehole• Laboratory tests

Suction pile suitability

• Water depth <10m• Hard ground/rock• Steep seabed

Soil data interpretation

• Seabed morphology• Stratigraphy• Design parameters

• Deep water• Clay or sand• Flat seabed

not suitable at all . . . . . . very well suitable n/a conditional feasible good

• Gravel • Layered soils
