PowerPoint Presentation

My presentation is on mash-ups, and how the laws of copyright and trademarks come into play, especially when creating my own work. Also, I plan to do the practical piece of work with the 2500 word essay. 1

Copyright What is it and why is it there? Copyright is an automatic right which applies when the work is fixed, that is written or recorded in some way - (Intellectual Property Office).Test of originality isn't high, but product must show authors effort, skill and labour. (Lasts 70 years after death of author).

2

To protect the original works of the author. Automatic protection. Work must have been expended (requires some effort). Gives copyright owner exclusive rights to copy, publish, distribute & license the work.

3

Trademarks What are they, what do they do? Protects any signs that distinguishes goods and services from competitors.Trade Mark is a badge of origin and a proprietary mark (i.e. signifies who owns the brand).

4

With trademarks and copyrights, there is expectations and then there is reality, question whats going on in the world through mash-up/remixes. Does the laws of copyright help those produce works more creatively and is it original from the authors view. 5

Film & Music, how do I connect to mash-ups? Probably wondering how I will create a piece of work, especially a mash-up in connection with famous films and musics. 6

Inspiration - Sacha Goldberger Super Flemish Sachas desire to re-appropriate them, takes them back to a time forming the cornerstone of modern western art.Sacha wants to confront these icons of American culture with contemporary paintersof the Flemish school. The collection demonstrates the use of 17 century techniques counterpointing lightand shadow to illustrate nobility and fragility of the super powerful of all times. It also invites you to celebrate the heroes of your childhood.

7

Then I went and researched into other mash-ups of known films. LEFT Toy Story & TerminatorRIGHT Price of Persia & Fresh Price of Bel Air8

LEFT Rise of the Planet of the Apes & Known Harry Potter character SnapeRIGHT Cat in the Hat & the character of Catwoman 9

For music I looked in well known albums, the one shown is The Beatles Abby Road (which is very iconic international). It has been re-appropriated a number of times, from Disney to the Simpsons, to even Lego. 10

TOP Bruce Springsteen album cover for Born to Run, re-appropriated by Sesame Street. BOTTOM The Beatles album cover for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, re-appropriated by The Simpsons.11

Looked at another artist, who spoofs ads. The work shows a fictional advertisement for a non-existent product. It takes from a well known product or another advert, and uses comedy to draw attention to the negative attention of whats being sold, almost showing the true meaning of the product. 12

How does this all connect? The use of copyright, mash-ups, and trademarks. 13

Tim Burton has his own style, its like his trademark that we as the viewer know that we are watching his film. Over time he has stuck to this style and this has made him successful. From this, in my piece of work, I want to create my own style and create my own trademark so audiences know they are looking at my art. 14

From that I will take my images, keeping in mind my style, to help create a trademark. 15

Once the images are taken, I will edit them on Photoshop in the way I want them look. 16

When taking my own images, I want to re-create famous album covers and movie posters. I want the audience to know exactly what they are looking at, but when they look they will see my own style and see the difference from original pieces of works. 17

For a future idea, I may place my images online and have the music from the albums/movies playing in the background. Although, if this does occur I will need to consider copyright laws with the music. 18

Thanks, keep calm and mash-up. 19
