Fall 2015 New Pig Trainer Unveiled On Sept. 9, 2015, SPLC and SEPCO unveiled the L.A.C.T. and Pig Skids at the Robert Training Facility. This joint venture between SPLC and Shell Deepwater will allow for a training platform for not only SPLC and Shell Deepwater employees, but also outside organizations, who will train on these skids in the very near future. This will be added to the new BOOST program at RTCC. This idea for this venture first came about in September 2014, when Charlie “Hoot” Houidobre reached out to several supervisors in the field, looking for a used Pig Launcher and Receiver for training purposes. Exactly 13 minutes later, Kelly Angelette responded and said, “Hoot, I can supply everything you need. One catch. I want to be included in developing the training. We have tons of issues with pigging that can be corrected with simple knowledge and correct procedures of launching and receiving pigs.” This set the wheels in motion. Soon after, SPLC Training and Robert BOOST focal points had a meeting to discuss what the future looked like for this new training apparatus. Kent Gerhardt’s team from RTCC, SPLC’s pigging team, Hoot and a few others sat down to go over the needs for both Shell SPLC and Shell Deepwater with pig launching and receiving. There have been several events where pigs were launched backwards, wrong sized pigs were used, wrong types of pigs were used, and bad launching methods were used. In some of these events it shutdown rigs!

Pig Skid (continued)

With Kelly and his team’s knowledge of pigging, it was a no brainer as to who would be the SME’s “Subject Matter Experts” to help SPLC and Shell Deepwater employees become better and more efficient with pig launching and receiving activities. After several meetings, Kent gave the approval to move forward with building the new Pig Skid.

In early 2014, Kent had a conversation with Hoot and asked if it would be okay if they move the L.A.C.T. skid from the outside shed area to the new, inside climate controlled BOOST Building at RTCC. Hoot also asked that the new Pig Skid be placed next to the L.A.C.T. skid.

It did not take long for Kelly’s construction and maintenance teams to put together and deliver an exceptional training apparatus in April 2015. Congratulations and many thanks to Kelly and his team for putting together a great training platform with the new Pig Skid.

This is one of the only working pig launchers owned by an oil company, as most are in contractor training facilities. Training classes will begin to be scheduled the last quarter of this year/first quarter of 2016.

On July 2nd, 2015, Mattox Pipeline Company LLC (a 79/21 JV between Shell and Nexen) announced the final investment decision on the Mattox Pipeline Project. This decision sets in motion the construction and installation of an export pipeline that will deliver crude from the new Shell/Nexen Appomattox platform to Clovelly, Louisiana via the Endymion Pipeline. In addition to serving Appomattox, the upsized Mattox Pipeline also has pre-installed subsea connection points which will allow for future interconnections.

“Safe completion of Mattox will provide a corridor solution for the developments in the active Norphlet region, allowing for connectivity and access that was not possible before,” said Michele Joy, Vice President of Shell Pipeline.

“Strong collaboration among Shell Pipeline, Projects & Technology and Upstream Americas was key to moving this project through each stage gate. Having all three Shell businesses working together in unison while bringing their unique expertise ensured that the team evaluated all the risks and opportunities from different perspective,” said Jay Xu, Business Opportunity Manager for the Mattox project. The blended team involving SPLC, P&T and UA will also be responsible for building the project.

Mattox Pipeline is expected to be complete by 2019.

Over the past two years, a small team has been working toward a vision to create and offer an interactive web mapping tool for BD & Growth to retain and share private market data. In short, the vision was to eliminate the need for 901c maps on everyone’s desk with their respective customer/competitor notes by providing a live-streaming note retention/sharing map. The future is here and the new tool is ready. We now have the latest in GIS interactive tools (ArcGIS) with automatic updates from BSEE, BOEM and SPLC data, all supported by SEPCO’s web-based My Maps tool (at no additional cost to SPLC or Shell). The BD & Growth teams have received

introductory training with a plan to continue regularly scheduled training sessions. The GIS and commercial project team has hit the grand slam in project design, scope, and delivery, to serve the needs of our dynamic business.

Shell Pipeline hosted the Sabine Neches Chiefs Association Meeting on August 5, 2015. Sabine Neches Chiefs’ Association (SNCA) is the nations’ oldest organized “Mutual Aid Association.” The organization began with a small group of municipal fire and industry leaders prior to the Texas City Disaster in 1947, and held its first meeting with just four fire departments and five local industries. Today, there are approximately 100 member organizations made up of emergency responders from Fire, Police, Industry (Shell Pipeline is a member), Emergency Management, Public Works, EMS, Hospitals, Schools, County, Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), State, and Federal organizations. Peyton Ross, Shell Facilities Manager, gave welcome remarks and thanked the association for their continued support to Shell Pipeline and industry. The program of Shell Pipeline’s assets, logistics and emergency response was presented by Phil Barker and Toni Atwell.

The tour of the Shell Pipeline on Coteau Road in Houma, Louisiana provided the campers with the opportunity to see how crude oil was brought into the facility, stored, and transported out. Many of the activities that the campers participated in helped to explain the complexities that are involved with receiving, storing, and moving of the crude oil. “The planning of these camp site visits at Shell sites and the day to day activities at Fletcher introduce students to our industry, provide some level of college experience and will play an important role for the future of our technical talent needs.” said Wylie Stice, US Crafts Maintenance Manager, Shell Pipeline Co.

With purpose and dedication, the Shell Energy Venture Production Camp at Fletcher Technical Community College was a resounding success. It was a positive learning experience for all involved. The campers enjoyed their week of hands-on activities, while the camp personnel took away insightful knowledge, too.

Bayou Region area high school students acquired hands-on experience through experiments and actives that focused on STEM/Technical careers as they are related to the energy industry during a week-long camp held June 15-19, at Fletcher Technical Community College’s Integrated Production Technologies Building. There were 35 campers that attended the camp. The Energy Venture Production Camp allowed students to polish their skills in science, math, and industry safety. The campers were also given opportunities to work on important soft skills, including: communication, teamwork, collaboration, problem solving, and critical observation. The event was sponsored by Shell Upstream Americas in partnership with Fletcher Technical Community College (Fletcher), both of which have a vested interest in encouraging high school students to study science, engineering, and technology. The coordinating team leading up to the day of the camp was Shell Workforce Development Specialist, David Esquibel, Fletcher Integrated Production Technologies (IPT) Department Head, Alvin J. Justelien III, Ph.D., Region 3 College & Career Transitions Coordinator, Nicol Blanchard, and Regional Workplace Experience Coordinator, Vina Cruse.

The campers spent the majority of the days in Fletcher’s Integrated Production Technologies building; both in classrooms and in the IPT lab. On Wednesday, June 17, a tour of the Shell Pipeline informed students about the transportation and storing of crude oil products. While at the Shell Pipeline facility, campers were able to speak with Shell employees one-on-one. During lunch, the campers listened to Shell employees explain the importance of a solid technical education, well-built resume’, and determination as they relate to careers at Shell Company.

The campers interacted with several speakers from Shell during the week of camp. The presenters included both Upstream and Downstream professionals with a wide variety of education and career related experiences. The campers interacted with mechanical technicians, electrical and instrumentation technicians, production operators, process operators, and a geophysicist. During the Shell Pipeline Tour, the campers spoke to several Shell Company employees, including recent hires from local community colleges, including a recent Fletcher IPT student, a US Craft Maintenance Manager.

Getting to Know...Keith A. Smith

Keith A. Smith is a Supervisor in the Operations Support Group, and has been with Shell for 24 years. He and his wife, Nikki, have been married for 26 years and live in Prairieville, LA. They both grew up in very small towns in south Louisiana, and started dating during their senior year of high school. Working for Shell has moved them from their families and they have learned to rely and count on each other over the years. They have a 17-year-old son, Connor, who is a senior at East Ascension High School. Connor has aspirations of attending LSU, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. They also have a 12-year-old daughter, Carson, who is a 7th grader at Central Middle School. Although Carson isn’t quite sure where she will be attending school, she is very artistic and would like to study graphic design.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Sunset, La. It was one of those small towns where everyone knew your parents.

Hobbies: I enjoy getting out on my 2009 Harley Davidson V-Rod on the weekends.

What is your favorite memory at Shell? In 1991, I was hired by Texaco Pipeline and my twin brother was hired by Shell Pipeline. Fast forward a few years and our companies merged and we were working for the same company, in the same region, with the same job title. My favorite memory was watching the look on the regional manager’s face when he realized there were two of us…

What is your dream job? In many respects, I think I may have my dream job. I enjoy learning new things and helping others and that’s a large part of Operations Support.
