welcome to Chichester CinemaAnd so we see the sun! This annual arrival of good weather is normally a disincentive to cinema-goers. The call of the countryside, the lure of the garden, the general freedom of the outdoors usually means we see less of you throughout the Spring.

But we have a cunning plan here at New Park. We have programmed a wonderfully diverse collection of quality films from the UK and abroad.

These include ‘Two Faces of January’, a classy noir-ish thriller with echoes of ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’. ‘Tracks’, based on the incredible true story of Robyn Davidson who walked 1,600 miles across the Australian desert with her dog… and her 4 camels of course. Performance events include ‘A Winter’s Tale’, ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’ and ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ (see pg7 for a full list), plus a tribute to Philip Seymour Hoffman, and a presentation of James Dean’s three (newly restored) films.

Congratulations are in order to the ‘Quasimodo’ team for their triumph at our annual ‘Mind for Movies’ Film Quiz at the Minerva Brasserie. The same group of quizzers took out the trophy in 2013, and I have no doubt that they will be back to defend their title next year. We raised just over £2,000 in what was once again a vibrant, joyful evening for all involved. A special thank you goes to all who made it possible – see you next year.

The 23rd Chichester International Film Festival is not too far away. The Open Air Screenings will be on the 8th and 9th August, and the Festival proper will run from the 14th to the 31st August. We will once again be looking for Festival Patrons, so send me a quick email ([email protected]) or call the cinema office (01243 790235) to register your interest. International Panorama: Nigeria

Half of a Yellow SunWe follow the lives of four people during the struggle to establish an independent republic in Nigeria. Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor (‘12 Years a Slave’).

Writer/director Bandele’s excellent feature debut is an epic love story set on the eve of civil war in the 60’s. Olanna (Thandie Newton) and Kainene (Anika Noni Rose) are strikingly beautiful middle-class twins in the newly independent nation. Their fractious relationship must be set aside as they become swept up in the turbulence of conflict. Bandele’s screenplay is an astute adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s highly acclaimed novel of the same name, bringing the source material’s main characters to vibrant realisation. As chaos engulfs them, they are thrown together and violently torn apart in ways none had ever imagined.

Love Punch A divorced couple (Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson) scheme to recover the retirement money that was stolen from them.

A wedding introduces a former couple (Brosnan & Thompson) who have struggled to have lasting relationships ever since their divorce; they are forced back together when a corrupt French businessman saunters off with their pension plan money. Slapstick hijinks unfold as the duo go about orchestrating a daring revenge heist with the help of another married duo (Timothy Spall and Celia Imrie). The foursome form an unlikely band of lawbreakers in this classic comedy caper set against the sun drenched backdrop of the Cote d’Azur. Brosnan and Thompson are sedately charming; Spall and Imrie are naturally funny together.

Twenty Feet from Stardom2014 Oscar winning documentary. The lives of Backup Singers, who live in a world that lies just beyond the spotlight.

A labour of love that was years in the making, this Sundance hit consequently won the Oscar for best documentary. Morgan Neville has fashioned a wondrously life affirming history of a group of unsung, incredibly talented female backing vocalists who have performed on some of the greatest records in history, yet have remained largely unknown. Featuring interviews with the singers themselves and all-star appearances from the musicians with whom they regularly play, plus fantastic archive performances including Springsteen, Sting, Stevie Wonder and Jagger. We also see some studio shots featuring Phil Spector, and concert footage of Talking Heads, Ray Charles and The Rolling Stones. Watching this makes you want to stand, sing, shout and cheer – do so!

The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune - all against the back-drop of a suddenly and dramatically changing continent. Expect an amalgam of Anderson’s predilection for jewel-box environments, arch pseudo-professional patter and giant major-name casts (the star-studded cast features Anderson regulars Owen Wilson, Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brody plus Tony Revolori, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Jude Law and Tilda Swinton). A special single encore screening of RSC’s Richard II following the Sold Out performances in the Autumn.

Richard is a monarch ordained by God to lead his people. But he is also a man of very human weakness. His vanity threatens to divide the great houses of England and drag his people into a dynastic civil war. He cousin Bolingbrook learns that he has been robbed of his inheritance, and takes advantage of the King’s absence to raise an army and invade England. The first of Shakespeare’s four great plays about the House of Lancaster, this is a politically charged exploration of power and Machiavellian plotting. RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran directs David Tennant in the title role, Oliver Ford Davies as the Duke of York and Nigel Lindsay as Bolingbroke.

Royal Opera House Ballet

A Winter’s Tale A new full length ballet with music by Joby Talbot and choreography by Christopher Wheeldon, recorded live at Royal Opera House (28 April).

Following his delightful full-length ballet ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’, Wheeldon continues his highly successful collaboration with designer Bob Crowley and composer Talbot to create his first ballet based on a Shakespeare play. The story follows the destruction of marriage through consuming jealousy, the abandonment of a child, and a seemingly hopeless love. Yet through remorse and regret, the ending is one of forgiveness and reconciliation. It is powerful material for ballet, with a story that allows for the portrayal of intense emotions between and within the characters, and the opportunity for the Company to create not just new central characters but the whole world around them. Tracks True story of Robyn Davidson, who in 1977 undertook an extraordinary trek by foot, 2,700km across the harsh Australian outback with her four camels and faithful dog.

When Robyn (Mia Wasikowska) arrives in Alice Springs she has nothing but her pet dog and a wild ambition. Her last obstacle is money and when she meets photographer Rick, she reluctantly agrees to sacrifice some solitude so that her journey can be sponsored by National Geographic. Wasikowska is luminous, her performance giving full depth to the contradictions of this fiercely independent and fragile character. Her need for connection, with the land rather than people, finds its truest expression when she is accompanied by an Aboriginal elder. Gloriously cinematography, Curran’s (‘The Painted Veil’) mesmerising film is a paean to both one woman’s courage and to the magnificent land she traverses.

The LunchboxA mistaken delivery in Mumbai’s famously efficient lunchbox delivery system connects a young housewife to an older man in the dusk of his life.

Legend of Mumbai’s Lunchbox delivery service says it “never goes wrong”, but lonely housewife, Ila (Nimrat Kaur), sends a lunchbox to her disinterested husband, and it ends up at the wrong man’s desk. Sajaan (Irrfan Khan), a clerk on the brink of retirement, receives it and is delightfully surprised at the wonderful tasting food. The two strangers build a gentle rapport through the food deliveries, exploring their hopes of the future. Batra deftly unfolds a wonderfully observed range of subtle emotions, supported by an often humorous script. India’s greatest character actors build on the flawed personalities of their characters to deliver unforgettable performances. A real charmer. In Hindi and English with English subtitles.

The Zero Theorem Terry Gilliam’s new satire concerns a computer hacker (Christoph Waltz) whose goal is to discover the reason for human existence.

Returning to ‘Brazil’ country, Gilliam focuses on Qohen Leth (Waltz), a reclusive computer genius in an undetermined future, who works as a programmer for the Orwellian organisation Corporation ManCom. When the mysterious ‘Management’ summons him to crack the Zero Theorem, Leth’s existence is set to irrevocably change. With striking cameos from Matt Damon and Tilda Swinton, this is quirky, inventive and colourful.

Suzanne (Sara Forestier) isn’t just the subject, but also the troublesome centre of this ambitious family drama. We follow Suzanne and her younger sister from their childhood, through their impetuous teens, through Suzanne’s passion for a small-time hood, to her most reckless move of all, which changes the family’s lives forever. Terrifically performed, and directed with mesmerising confidence. (subtitles)

Noah Darren Aronofsky’s undeniably bold, personal, visually extravagant take on the Old Testament tale.

The global flood that wiped out almost all earthly life is the original disaster story. As it is embraced by most of the major world religions, many will make it their business to be offended by untraditional renditions of holy texts. Noah (Russell Crowe), his wife Naameh (Jennifer Connelly) and their sons, are estranged from the rest of humanity, struggling to survive in forbidding surroundings in the belief that the great flood will come. Aronofsky has been daring, digging deep to develop a bold interpretation of a tale which offers a lot of room for speculation and invention. Anthony Hopkins plays Methuselah and Ray Winstone is Cain.

The Trip to Italy brings back together Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon in another foodie road trip directed by Michael Winterbottom.

The film, which will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, is a funny and charming comedy but also the demonstration of Brydon and Coogan’s talent and synergy when it comes down to improvisational comedy. “Surely this makes Coogan and Brydon’s show the most sustained and successful example we’ve had of genuine ad-libbing” The Guardian. This one off screening in cinemas will be followed by an exclusive satellite Q&A with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. Paul and Lucie are a married couple. As the movie opens, we get to know Paul as a successful neurosurgeon who spends too much time focusing on his job and not enough time on his wife. Then one day Paul runs into Lou, a bartender whom he had treated once when she was a young child. It is not long before it becomes clear that Lou (played by Leïla Bekhti) has a strong interest in Paul. Will Paul reciprocate? Meanwhile Lucie needs to deal with her unstable sister Mathilde, and Paul’s business partner in his private practice, Gerard, seems to have an unusual interest in Pau’s wife Lucie. Part psychological thriller, part classic love triangle and part domestic drama, Daniel Auteuil once again shows masterly control over a storyline that leaves plenty of room for angst ridden introspection and moody silences. Writer-director Philippe Claudel puts the French middle class under the microscope, supported by another faultless performance by Scott-Thomas. (subtitles)

Three girls in 1980s Stockholm decide to form a punk band - despite not having any instruments and being told by everyone that punk is dead.

Three very special little girls on the cusp of puberty are horrifically surrounded by conformist girlie-girls and immature boys toying with societal expectations of machismo. Two of the young ladies are self-described punk rockers, while a third comes from a goody-two-shoes ultra-Christian background (but with punk desires roiling beneath her veneer). Our pre-teen rebels form a punk band, resulting in a happy hell breaking loose, which, however, is threatened by a combination of their newfound overt expressions of non-conformity and all the normal conflicts of puberty. These conflicts have a potentially disastrous effect upon their quest to prove, to themselves and the world, that, as the film’s title declares: We Are the Best! (subtitles)

Having made contacts within a Kabul-based militant group, war photographer Rebecca (Binoche), is allowed to document the haunting ceremony in which a woman makes herself spiritually ready for a suicide attack. She winds up in the blast zone, is badly wounded and returns home to Ireland. Although she is desperate to return, she decides to leave her job after listening to her family. Writer/director Poppe, himself a war photographer, makes a fine case for the importance of going after the raw images of warfare and suffering. The film is clear-eyed about the pain Rebecca causes to those she loves, fully making the case for what she’s doing, while dramatizing the ugliness of her failures at home. (In English)

Nazif barely makes ends meet as an iron picker to support his family, when tragedy strikes his pregnant wife Senada.

Nazif finds his wife Senada laid up in pain and drives her to the nearest clinic to find that she has miscarried. The condition is critical and Senada needs immediate treatment at a faraway hospital, but because she does not have health insurance, the hospital requests they pay 980 Bosnian marks (500 Euros), a fortune for a modest iron picker. For the next 10 days, Nazif will do everything he can to try and save Senadas life. Grand Jury Prize winner at the Berlin Film Festival, this is a universal human story at heart, a bleakly compelling family drama with a coldly furious edge of political protest. (subtitles)

Both Ivan’s brute determination to regain control over his life and his stubborn refusal to engage fully with the emotional reality, are combined perfectly in Hardy’s taut performance. Knight’s direction, too, is as resolutely spartan as his central character. Shot in its entirety over eight days, and never leaving the interior of the car, Knight’s film succeeds in creating a gripping atmosphere of tightly wound tension.

ExhibitionAn artist couple find that selling their imposing London home starts to open fissures in their relationship in Joanna Hogg’s coolly-observed fable.

Enthralling to watch, Hogg’s (‘Unrelated’, ‘Archipelago’) exquisitely observed third feature is her first set in London. Its central protagonists are artist couple D and H (Viv Albertine, guitarist of punk group ‘The Slits’ and Turner prize nominate Liam Gillick) who are preparing to sell the modernist home that has defined their relationship. What has prompted the move is not entirely clear, but what is certain is that the anxieties, dreams and memories that surface expose the fissures in this cool, austere relationship. The house itself is a commanding third character, its Chinese puzzle of sharp angles are as difficult to fathom as its inhabitants. Hogg’s fascinating, entirely singular film conceals as much as it reveals.

In May 1954 James Dean was on location with Elia Kazan filming his first feature film, ‘East of Eden’. This young charismatic actor was on his road to stardom. 60 years later, James Dean is an icon and he’s still young. His tragic death before his third film ‘Giant’ was released, cut short what was likely to be one of the most significant film careers of the 20th century. Ellen Cheshire, film writer and lecturer, will explore Dean’s life, films and legacy.

Based on John Steinbeck’s novel and directed by Elia Kazan, ‘East of Eden’ is the first of three major films that make up James Dean’s movie legacy. The 24-year-old idol-to-be plays Cal, a wayward Salinas Valley youth who vies for the affection of his hardened father (Raymond Massey) with his favoured brother Aron (Richard Davalos). Playing off the haunting sensitivity of Julie Harris, Dean’s performance earned one of the film’s four Academy Award nominations. Among the movie’s stellar performances, Jo Van Fleet won the Oscar as Best Supporting Actress.

Rebel Without a Cause An iconic film about a fatal day in the lives of three LA teenagers.

Perfectly capturing the zeitgeist of America in the 50s, this is the film that immortalised James Dean when it was released just a month after his death. James Dean’s performance came to define and crystallise some of the most potent and lasting cultural shifts of the 1950s. Through it, he became an all-American icon and the symbol of that most American of phenomena - the teenager. His role as Jim Stark, a young delinquent who is new in town and is struggling to fit in, came to immortalise Dean in this respect. It still serves as the definitive paean to the throes of rebellious youth and a ubiquitous reference point for acts of cool defiance. Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo and Jim Backus also star.

Giant James Dean’s final film sees him play an oil-rich cowboy, alongside Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson.

The story spans two generations of wealthy ranchers, and two generations of Hollywood actors. Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor put in traditional formal performances as a ranch owner and his wife, while James Dean, as the newly oil-rich cowboy Jett Rink – and playing the rebellious son of Dennis Hopper’s character – points towards the future, with naturalistic acting, resonant with emotion. Later in the film, the aged Jett hardly seems to be Dean at all – because, in a performance-sense, he becomes that middle-aged, drunken tyrant. The fiery final scenes with Hopper (inspired by Dean) symbolised that old Hollywood was over. It’s bitterly ironic then, that it was during the making of the film that we were robbed of this prophet of American cinema.

1962. A glamorous American couple, the charismatic Chester MacFarland (Viggo Mortensen) and his alluring younger wife Colette (Kirsten Dunst), arrive in Athens by boat via the Corinthian Canal. While sightseeing at the Acropolis they encounter Rydal (Oscar Isaac), a young, Greek-speaking American who is working as a tour guide, scamming tourists on the side. Drawn to Colette’s beauty and impressed by Chester’s wealth and sophistication, Rydal gladly accepts their invitation to dinner. However, all is not as it seems with the MacFarlands and Chester’s affable exterior hides darker secrets. When Rydal visits the couple at their exclusive hotel, Chester presses him to help move the body of a seemingly unconscious man who he claims attacked him. In the moment, Rydal agrees but as events take a more sinister turn he finds himself compromised and unable to pull himself free. His increasing infatuation with the vulnerable and responsive Colette gives rise to Chester’s jealousy and paranoia, leading to a tense and dangerous battle of wits between the two men. Their journey takes them from Greece to Turkey, and to a dramatic finale played out in the back alleys of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar. A classic modern film noir.

The titular Omar, in a star-making turn from Adam Bakri, is a thoughtful young baker in love with Nadia (Leem Lubany). When he agrees to go with her brother and their mutual friend Amjad on a mission to kill an Israeli soldier, it’s partly to gain Tarek’s respect so that he can ask for Nadia’s hand in marriage. But that act of violence soon spirals out of control. With an ingenious twist on ‘Othello’ that packs an unforgettable sting in the tail. (subtitles)

This supremely assured film renders perhaps the most convincing fictional account to date of being in a band and creating music. This special event offers an exclusive private view of the exhibition ‘Vikings: Life and Legend’ in the company of world experts.

Introduced by British Museum Director Neil MacGregor and presented by historian Michael Wood, alongside experts on Viking ships and swords, burial and beliefs, language and legacy. Weapons, coins, jewellery, amulets and religious images show how Vikings created an international network connecting cultures over four continents. Paris Opera Ballet LIVE

Balanchine / Millepied Inc. complete ‘Daphnis et Chloe’

Alongside Balanchine’s ballet ‘Palais de Cristal’ (music by Bizet), Benjamin Millepied adapts Ravel’s complete ‘Daphnis et Chloé’. Philippe Jordan will be accompanying the Paris Opera Ballet for the first time.

This encounter between two great French composers and two choreographers from the NY City Ballet (founder George Balanchine and former student Millepied) highlights the similarities and dissonances between them. In 1947, Balanchine paid tribute to the company and to the French tradition with his first production for the Paris Opera Ballet, ‘Le Palais de Cristal’, in which he choreographed an early work by Bizet, ‘Symphony in C’. Characterized by its architectural design and sense of dialogue with the music, this ballet is a model of academic virtuosity, to which Christian Lacroix, an artisan of light and colour, has brought new shape. Millepied’s third creation for the Paris Opera Ballet, in collaboration with the conceptual artist Daniel Buren, revisits the myth of ‘Daphnis and Chloé’. In the tradition of Balanchine, Millepied draws his inspiration from the rhythms and colours of Ravel’s “choreographic symphony” for chorus and orchestra. Approx 120m including interval.

In Secret Charlie Stratton’s feature debut, an adaptation of Emile Zola’s scandalous ‘mud and blood’ novel ‘Thérèse Raquin’.

Elizabeth Olsen is Thérèse, a young woman in 1860s Paris trapped in an unsatisfactory marriage to her sickly cousin Camille (Tom Felton) by her domineering aunt Madame Raquin (Jessica Lange). A smart and serious-minded French love story set in urban Paris involving a three-way courtship and underlying sense of claustrophobia.

Two close brothers are both dedicated doctors in Paris, the darkly authoritative Boris (Cedric Kahn) and the warm but troubled Dimitri (Laurent Stocker). One day, they both fall in love with a patient’s mother which disrupts what had seemed to be such a solid relationship. They confess their feelings for her at separate moments, and for what seem like opposing reasons. Writer/director Ropert smartly grounds the drama in the realities of family and community, trailing the brothers as they deal with various patients, and inserting humour wherever she can. Reminiscent of the cleverly scripted dramas of Truffaut’s late period, it’s at once astutely observed and deeply passionate, with spot-on direction and performances. (subtitles)

The Wind RisesKaze Tachinu

Miyazaki’s swansong is a departure from recent Ghibli animations, a film aimed quite specifically at adult audiences and set during times of war and conflict.

Essentially a semi-biographical work, the central character of Jiro is a composite of engineer Jiro Horikoshi and aeronautical designer Tatsuo Hori, a young man who dreams of creating a modern aeroplane which flies like a bird. The film takes us through a timeline of historical events - the Great Earthquake of 1923, the Depression and Japan’s TB epidemic and WWII in which Jiro’s creations will wreak such havoc. Critics have been in raptures over the animation, Miyazaki’s pastel palette and the transcendent spirituality. The final work from one of the world’s great masters of animation.

Der Rosenkavalier Glyndebourne’s 80th-anniversary season opens with Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, not seen at Glyndebourne since 1982, in a new staging by Richard Jones, with Robin Ticciati, the company’s new Music Director, conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

After shocking the opera world with Salome and Elektra, Richard Strauss seduced it with Der Rosenkavalier, first performed in 1911. He and librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal fashioned the most beguiling of all romantic farces, its nostalgic flavour crystallised in the elegant, sensuous waltzes which pervade and define the score.

The married, middle-aged Marschallin chooses her young lover Octavian as Rose Cavalier, bearer of the ceremonial silver rose to Sophie, the teenage fiancée of Baron Ochs, the Marschallin’s crude country cousin. But Octavian and Sophie fall in love at first sight, setting off a chain of boisterous comic intrigues that gradually yield to a bittersweet meditation on the evanescence of love and time.

The opera’s hero – the Rose Cavalier – was modelled on Mozart’s Cherubino and tailored ‘for a graceful girl dressed up as a man,’ as Hofmannsthal wrote. Poised between youth and maturity, Octavian’s voice hovers between soprano and mezzo, that timbre so perfect at embodying adolescence and androgyny. Strauss, famously enamoured of the female voice, lavished his most sumptuous music on Octavian and the two sopranos who complete the Rosenkavalier love triangle. Irish mezzo-soprano Tara Erraught makes her role debut as Octavian, while Kate Royal, who began her career in the Glyndebourne Chorus, returns in her role debut as the Marschallin, and Teodora Gheorghiu makes her Glyndebourne debut as Sophie.

An Autumn Afternoon Now ravishingly restored, this is the final work of Japanese master filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu (1903 – 1963).

One of the greatest last films in cinema history, Ozu’s masterpiece is truly autumnal, charting the inevitable eclipse of older generations by irreverent youth. Revisiting his earlier ‘Late Spring’ (1949), Ozu casts the familiar face of Chishu Ryu as Hirayama, an elderly widower worried about his unmarried daughter. Counselled on all sides to marry her off before it is too late, Hirayama plays matchmaker and reluctantly prepares to bid his old life farewell. One of just six films that Ozu made in colour, the spectacular use of primary colours within an otherwise muted palette is striking, often enlivened by meticulous placing of objects in the frame: a red lantern in a street scene, a bright blue bucket on the floor, and emerald green rice bowls on the dining table. A Small Family Business returns to the National Theatre for the first time since its celebrated premiere in 1987, when it won the Evening Standard Award for Best Play. Jack McCracken: a man of principle in a corrupt world. But not for long. Moments after taking over his father-in-law’s business he’s approached by a private detective armed with some compromising information. Jack’s integrity fades away as he discovers his extended family to be thieves and adulterers, looting the business from their suburban homes. Rampant self-interest takes over and comic hysteria builds to a macabre climax.

A Touch of Sin Tian Zhu Ding

Jia Zhangke’s Cannes prize-winner comprising four fact-based stories of violence and murder, and is a virtual state of the nation report on China in 2013.

Across four skilfully interlinked stories, which traverse the country from north to south and back again, Jia presents a range of indelible characters: an ex-miner enraged by corruption, a man who kills and steals to stave off boredom, a woman who stabs her would-be rapist and a young kid drifting through the foreign-owned factories and nightclubs of the south. As the title suggests, the film pays dues to Wuxia directors who explored earlier times when Chinese society had no adequate rule of law. Jia sees a present-day society in which violence seems almost endemic, and dares to ask: what is the country coming to? (subtitles)

When debt starts snapping at the heels of broker Andy Hanson (Hoffman), he comes up with a plan to solve his problems. Roping in his initially sceptical brother Hank (Ethan Hawke) with claims that ‘nobody gets hurt, everybody wins’, the pair target their parents’ jewellery store, which they both know inside out. Events, however, take a turn for the worse when the would-be robbers meet with resistance, starting a chain of events that change the family forever. Very under-rated.

The most radical feature of Richard Eyre’s first-rate revival of ‘Ghosts’ is its speed. Shorn of intervals, Ibsen’s 1881 play races along. The effect is to remind us how much Ibsen, the pioneer of naturalism, owed to Greek tragedy: he shows us the present consequences of past actions in a sustained arc of suffering. Eyre’s production grabs you by the throat and never releases its grip. Lesley Manville’s Helene Alving is a magnificent performance, and Oswald, whose gradual degeneration is precisely charted by Jack Lowden, is also as powerful , since mother and son engage in physical as well as moral combat. Originally an Almeida Theatre Production, this sold out and critically acclaimed show has been captured live at the Trafalgar Studios during its limited West End run.

Grace of MonacoThe story of former Hollywood star Grace Kelly’s crisis of marriage and identity, during a political dispute between Monaco’s Prince Rainier III and France’s Charles De Gaulle, and a looming French invasion of Monaco in the early 1960s.

The film portrays a period in the life of American Actress Grace Kelly (played by Nicole Kidman) who became Princess Grace of Monaco when she married Prince Rainier III (Tim Roth) in 1956, in what was dubbed “the marriage of the century”. An Oscar winner, she was already a huge film star, having worked with the very greatest (John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, Fred Zinnemann) and acclaimed the world over. Six years later, amid occasional difficulties in fulfilling her role, she was invited back to Hollywood by Alfred Hitchcock, to play in his new film ‘Marnie’. At the time, France was threatening to tax and even annex Monaco, the tiny Principality whose monarch Kelly had become. Was she still an actress? Was she really Princess of Monaco? Kidman and Roth leads an ensemble that includes Paz Vega, Parker Posey, Frank Langella, Milo Ventimiglia and Derek Jacobi in the 1962 set story with Kelly trying to balance her career, life as a royal, her role as a mother and more, all while being in the eye of the public. It looks lush, and the costumes are fine, and is set to open this year’s Cannes Film Festival in May.

Jimmy’s HallPolitical activist Jimmy Gralton is deported from Ireland during the country’s ‘Red Scare’ of the 1930s, in Ken Loach’s latest (and possibly last) film.

Gralton (Barry Ward), a communist and political activist, challenged the Catholic Church’s restriction of free speech in 1920s Ireland and faced violent protests. Set in 1932 and based on a play by Donal O’Kelly, the film follows this Irish communist leader who returns from a decade in New York before being deported by De Valera’s government for alleged Communist sympathies, to re-open the dance hall he built in 1921. The film will “celebrate the spirit of the free thinkers who went to learn, argue, dream and have fun” in the dance hall. ‘Jimmy’s Hall’ is rumoured to be Loach’s last feature.
