JoSHUA t. GIrnenon BEFORE Ton InVELOn-novIsOCoscsinvEc.-Mr. Giddings appeared before the ISenate Brown Raid Commttee on the 3d. He wastreated very politely by the committee. Senator

fact, wrote a letter to him (Giddings) sayntg thatBrown woold be at Andover at a given time, whlch.was is the latter part of May or June last.' Mr.Giddlngs then addresed a note to him (Brown) atWeat Andover, requesting him to call ip and sonhim, with the expectation that he wonld give alecture. Brown come one Saturday afternoon, while a numbeor of men of the village, Giddinsoamong then, were engaged in a game of baseball,or bat snd hail.
Giddings was called aside and introduced t4Brown, who stated that he came there to make ar-rangements to lecture, and appeared anxious tohave some arrangement as to the amount of cashhe was to receive. Giddings disliked the idea ofchatfering about the amount, and told Brown tocome and give the lecture, and they would see himpaid. Brown accordingly came, on a Wednesdayafternoon, and lectured in the church in which he(Giddings) was accusttmed to worship. After thelecture Giddings invited him, with other gentlemen,to tea, and Brown accepted.the invitation, and tooaktea with hito and remained in conversation somehalf or three-quarters of an hour, when his carriageor conveyance drove"up to the door and he left. These were the only occasions on which he eversaw John Brown. Neither in his lecture nor in hisconversation did Browi allude in any manner toany arranogement, combination or preparation, toinvade any State to incite insurrection amongslaves or rebellion, or anything of the kind. Mr.G. was very positive and emphatic on this point.
Mr. Mason inquired about a letter which JohnBrown, Jr., was said to have written to somebodyin which he stated that Giddings had contributedthree dollars, and had formed societies for the rais-ing of funds?
To thin Mr. Giddings replied, that he could not,of course, undertake to explain any letter thatBrown, Jr., had written. He could only say thatMr. Brown had called on him as he (Giddungs) wasabout leaving Portage county to lecture at theEclectic Institute i the own of Hiram, and he toldhim that as he was advertised to lecture at Raven-na the following day, and a lawyer lived there whohad been a Senator in tClet State, (Ohio) a man oirepute, by the name of O. 1P. Brown-no relationto John Brown-and who was ssid to have been atthe head of an association to raise funds for" char-itable purposes," which he understood distinctly tomean the aiding of escaped slaves. 'ie (Giddings)would call on said O. P. Brown, and see if hewould not give something from the funds of.thatsociety or association. This, Mr. Giddings said, must have been the only remark upon which Browncould have based the statement in his letter aboutassociations as connected with him.
Mr. Mason inquired what was tle subject of his.(Giddings') lectures?
Mr. Giddings.-.I lecture upon the trial of JohnQuincy Adams, upon the "higher law," uponacenes in Congreesianal life, and upon the powersand duties of hntsan governments.
Mlr. Mason.-In regard to your lecture upon thepowers and duties of human government, does thatnot have direct reference to slaves ahd the rightsof slaves in slave States ?
Mr. Giddings.--It has direct reference to therights of human nature, the Divine wil, as mani-fcsted in the laws of nature, the legitimate powersof hueman governments, the duties oi human gov-crnmente, of the powers possessed by goveruments.
Mr. Mason.--nt les not all that direct referenceto slaves in the-slave States?
Mr. Giddingsa.--Wherevor a human soug existsthere tCle rights to which I have referred exist, In.luding the whole huoman faomily.Mr. Mason-Do you consider that this hia-r
law is superior to human laws anti the Coeatlitiosof our country?
Mr. Giddings-No enactment or mandate of'adespot invading those human rlghtse Is law, nor hasit any of the elements of law. It confers no pow-ers upon the oppressor, imposes us ob _tonuponthevicttm, Upon these points Mr.GIlttR g ,fd,he urged the doctrines of all the German wt-supon natural law, and most of the uontlseintiewietors upon that sbject in all the lo tisnworld farthe last two genturies. He proseeded to say 1ththis mandate of despots was entitled to no resPectfrom any person ; that~oppusttiog to such d eRoticenactment was not only the right but the duty ofevery good citizen. that those who prs such .en
ctmenta render themselves acesory to theerimes committed under them, and have for agesrecsived the detestation of all patriotic men, andthat from the time of Nero to the present doy de-pots have bean regarded with contempt by ilb lov-ers of justice.
