In his proclamation to the citizens of Baltimore a the Governor of Maryland states, in substance, that he tr had been Informed by a large numberof respectable 0 citizens that seriousapprehensionswere entertained of violence and rioting at the State election of the 4th of November, and being fully convinced of the el justness of these apprehensions, from the events of n the elections of 1856 and of the recent municipal election, he had resolved to interpose the military i, arm of the State to insure good order. To this he a n appends the following orders: ORDER No. 1. it Headquarters M. M., Baltimore, Oct. 28, 1857. b Major-General George H. Steuart, commanding stt Lt. Division M. V-YoU are hereby ordered to hold - your entire command ready for immediate eservice, flly equipped, and report to me at nooon Saturday - next. T. WATkbs LIOO. nd ORDnR N 2. . Headquarters M. M., Baltimore, Oct. 28,1857 : John Spear Smith, Major-General 3d Division, h. M. a You arehereby ordered to enroll and embody, with. out delay, six regiments of not less than six hundred men each, (to be officered andequipped,) and hold the same in readiness for service b noon on Satur- Sday next, and report to me. T. .WATumsLeoox. a. The Mayor of Baltimore replied to this in a letter, protesting against the action of the Governor as an ud nauthorizedusurpation of municipal authority and t, constitutional right, and expressing the opinion that to bring the military into contact with the people on a day of election without official requisition, would - seriouslyendanger the peace of the city and lead to 0 serious consequences. S SPECIAL MINISTER TO THE UNITED STATES.-The London correspondentof the New York Times writes by the Persia that the British Government has de- , cided to appoint a special minister to negotiate a settlement of the remaining differences between Eng- land and this country in regard to Central American affairs. The appointment will take place early next year, and possibly sooner. The Times says : We have reason to believe that Sir William Gore nnd Ouseley has been selected for this important service. - If so, the choice indicatesa disposition, on the part of the British Government, to conduct this delicate and protracted negotiation to a peacefully and mutu- ally satisfactory result. ROW AMONG THE MOBILE TYPOS. -On Tuesday last, fifteen members of the Typographical Union of Mobilewere arraigned before the Mayor's Court of that city, on a charge of conspiracy with intent to injurethe business of H. Ballentyne & Co., publishers of the Tribune. The difficulty arose, it appears, from the employment in the Tribone office of three appren- tices, one more than the rules of the Union allow. Five of the party were dismissed, and the others were required to give bail in the sum of $200 each to answer the, charge before the City Court. Seven members of the Union were fined$25 each for using threatening andinsulting language towards persons employed in the Tribune office, calling them " rats," etc. They appealed to a higher court. DIsnED.-We learn from pretty good authority, says an exchange, that President Buchanan publicly and emphatically disapproves the Tehuantepec grant, recently obtained from Mexico by Messrs. La Sere and Benjamin. He freely declares that he will have nothing whatever to do with it. So the grantees will have to try again ere they can hope for Government endorsement. A SPEcrLATon.-Mr. John Cone, who resides near Haddam,Ct., appeared at the counter of the Middle- town Bank some days since with $1,000 of its bills' demanded the specie and got it. The profit of the bank in the transaction was clear two hundred per cent.-two thousand dollars. The bills were paid to John in 1835, and he carefullywrapped them ina napkin, where they have remained ever since. He re- turned them to the bank pinned up in the sameslips that he received, with the same marks. The Savings Bank interest would have been nearly $2,000. How NICHOLSON wAS ELECTED U. 8. Whatthen musthave been his surprise when Nichol- son came out ahead But the seqoel runs that Andy Johnson threw his influenoce in favor of Nicholson, for which the latter was to do yeoman service tomake Geov.Johnson President in 1860. INCIDEONT OF THE LATE DISASTER.-In the recent b railroad disaster to a freight train on the New York h Central, a tall, slab-sided, lank-haired Yankee drover was along with six horses in the car which Was pre. cipitated down the embankment. It rolled overand over until it reached the bottom of the hollow below, and rested upon its aide. In a minute ortwo, the terrible sublimity of the scene was broken, and the consternation of the spectators changed to mirth upon seeing thedoor of theupset carthrown open and the head and body of the Vermont drover projecting i out of it; his elongated physiognomy expressing the most unmitigated astonishment. " What on airth,"he exclaimed," are ye doin' on?" The effect was irresistibly comic, and the specta- tomrs had to laugh, in spite of the calamity. [N. Y. Tribune. Gov. WALKER TO BE RgCAMLJD.-We give the following telegraphic dispatch of the 30th ult. from 1 Washington, for what it is worth : The admistration utterly condemns Gov. Walker's course in purgingthe polls in Oxford county, Kansas, contrary to specific instructions to not at as judge in this matter. There are the best reasons forthe belief that both Walker and Stanton will be recalled, unless they immediately resign. SAn CASE.-A yonng mechanic on Saturday even- ing was arrested for stealing a piece of meat from a butcher's stall. He said he hadbeen 'witobut work several weeks and being without money orcredit, and too proud to beg, he preferred to steal to save from starvation his family-a wife and two children-who had been without food since Friday morning. An in- vestigation into the case proved the truth of his state- ments, and he was released, given the meat and told to come for more, and was also presented with a purse of $6 which was made up for him. [Newark (N. J.) Advertiser. BULWnE AT Homt--Knebworth, the finebaronial Sresidence ot Sir E. Bulwer Lytton, is in Heilord- shire. A moreinteresting pieceof antiquity, croded with vast halls, picture galleries, armor and pic- turesque monsters could not be imagined. Ittoi seated within and domineers over 7,000 acres of park, woodland and farm. No wonder the man writes so exquisitely, on the margin ot his own lake. in a re- tired fihshing cottage, and with all the appliances of comfort, silence and sweet air about him. He is the very soul of hospitality, a republican in his philosophy, a polished gentleman and yet made, by the misfor- tunes of hin domestlc life, peculiar, if not somewhat eccentric. He pines over the oreof a beantiful daughter of fifteen, and his wife, more then haef- cracked, won't live near him. He is laboriously striving for political fame and position; an aristocrat in affiliation, bat quite moderate. Mortanl Law lan Baltimore. In his proclamation to the citizens of Baltimore a

the Governor of Maryland states, in substance, that he tr

had been Informed by a large number of respectable 0citizens that serious apprehensions were entertainedof violence and rioting at the State election of the4th of November, and being fully convinced of the eljustness of these apprehensions, from the events of nthe elections of 1856 and of the recent municipalelection, he had resolved to interpose the military i,arm of the State to insure good order. To this he an appends the following orders:

    ORDER No. 1. itHeadquarters M. M., Baltimore, Oct. 28, 1857. bMajor-General George H. Steuart, commanding stt

Lt. Division M. V-YoU are hereby ordered to hold- your entire command ready for immediate eservice,

flly equipped, and report to me at nooon Saturday- next. T. WATkbs LIOO.nd ORDnR N 2.

    .Headquarters M. M., Baltimore, Oct. 28,1857 :John Spear Smith, Major-General 3d Division, h. M.

a You are hereby ordered to enroll and embody, with.out delay, six regiments of not less than six hundredmen each, (to be officered and equipped,) and holdthe same in readiness for service b noon on Satur-Sday next, and report to me. T. .WATums Leoox.

    a. The Mayor of Baltimore replied to this in a letter, protesting against the action of the Governor as anud nauthorized usurpation of municipal authority andt, constitutional right, and expressing the opinion thatto bring the military into contact with the people ona day of election without official requisition, would-seriously endanger the peace of the city and lead to0 serious consequences.

S SPECIAL MINISTER TO THE UNITED STATES.-The

London correspondent of the New York Times writesby the Persia that the British Government has de-, cided to appoint a special minister to negotiate asettlement of the remaining differences between Eng-land and this country in regard to Central Americanaffairs. The appointment will take place early nextyear, and possibly sooner. The Times says :

We have reason to believe that Sir William Gorennd Ouseley has been selected for this important service.-If so, the choice indicates a disposition, on the partof the British Government, to conduct this delicate

and protracted negotiation to a peacefully and mutu-ally satisfactory result.

ROW AMONG THE MOBILE TYPOS. -On Tuesdaylast, fifteen members of the Typographical Union ofMobile were arraigned before the Mayor's Court ofthat city, on a charge of conspiracy with intent toinjure the business of H. Ballentyne & Co., publishersof the Tribune. The difficulty arose, it appears, fromthe employment in the Tribone office of three appren-tices, one more than the rules of the Union allow.Five of the party were dismissed, and the otherswere required to give bail in the sum of $200 eachto answer the, charge before the City Court. Sevenmembers of the Union were fined $25 each for usingthreatening and insulting language towards personsemployed in the Tribune office, calling them " rats,"etc. They appealed to a higher court.

DIsnED.-We learn from pretty good authority, says an exchange, that President Buchanan publiclyand emphatically disapproves the Tehuantepec grant, recently obtained from Mexico by Messrs. La Sereand Benjamin. He freely declares that he will havenothing whatever to do with it. So the grantees willhave to try again ere they can hope for Governmentendorsement.

A SPEcrLATon.-Mr. John Cone, who resides nearHaddam, Ct., appeared at the counter of the Middle-town Bank some days since with $1,000 of its bills'demanded the specie and got it. The profit of thebank in the transaction was clear two hundred percent.-two thousand dollars. The bills were paid toJohn in 1835, and he carefully wrapped them in anapkin, where they have remained ever since. He re-turned them to the bank pinned up in the same slipsthat he received, with the same marks. The SavingsBank interest would have been nearly $2,000.

How NICHOLSON wAS ELECTED U. 8. SENATOR.-Gen. Pillow, it is well known, had a majority of hisparty pledged for his election, and up to the time ofvoting iu caucus expected to receive the nomination. What then must have been his surprise when Nichol-son came out ahead But the seqoel runs that AndyJohnson threw his influenoce in favor of Nicholson, for which the latter was to do yeoman service to makeGeov.Johnson President in 1860. Well, to be honest asthis world goes is to be one man picked out of a few.

INCIDEONT OF THE LATE DISASTER.-In the recent brailroad disaster to a freight train on the New York hCentral, a tall, slab-sided, lank-haired Yankee droverwas along with six horses in the car which Was pre.cipitated down the embankment. It rolled overandover until it reached the bottom of the hollow below, and rested upon its aide. In a minute ortwo, theterrible sublimity of the scene was broken, and theconsternation of the spectators changed to mirth uponseeing the door of the upset car thrown open andthe head and body of the Vermont drover projecting iout of it; his elongated physiognomy expressing themost unmitigated astonishment." What on airth,"he exclaimed," are ye doin' on?"The effect was irresistibly comic, and the specta-

tomrs had to laugh, in spite of the calamity.[N. Y. Tribune.

Gov. WALKER TO BE RgCAMLJD.-We give thefollowing telegraphic dispatch of the 30th ult. from 1Washington, for what it is worth :

The admistration utterly condemns Gov. Walker'scourse in purging the polls in Oxford county, Kansas, contrary to specific instructions to not at as judge inthis matter. There are the best reasons forthe beliefthat both Walker and Stanton will be recalled, unlessthey immediately resign.

SAn CASE.-A yonng mechanic on Saturday even-ing was arrested for stealing a piece of meat from abutcher's stall. He said he hadbeen 'witobut workseveral weeks and being without money orcredit, andtoo proud to beg, he preferred to steal to save fromstarvation his family-a wife and two children-whohad been without food since Friday morning. An in-vestigation into the case proved the truth of his state-ments, and he was released, given the meat and toldto come for more, and was also presented with apurse of $6 which was made up for him.

BULWnE AT Homt--Knebworth, the fine baronialSresidence ot Sir E. Bulwer Lytton, is in Heilord-shire. A moreinteresting pieceof antiquity, crodedwith vast halls, picture galleries, armor and pic-turesque monsters could not be imagined. It toiseated within and domineers over 7,000 acres of park, woodland and farm. No wonder the man writes soexquisitely, on the margin ot his own lake. in a re-tired fihshing cottage, and with all the appliances ofcomfort, silence and sweet air about him. He is thevery soul of hospitality, a republican in his philosophy,a polished gentleman and yet made, by the misfor-tunes of hin domestlc life, peculiar, if not somewhateccentric. He pines over the ore of a beantifuldaughter of fifteen, and his wife, more then haef-cracked, won't live near him. He is laboriouslystriving for political fame and position; an aristocratin affiliation, bat quite moderate. Be ha a son whois attached to the British legation at the Hague, aI remarkable writer already.
