Section One: Reading Comprehension

The reading comprehension section measures students’ abilities to carefully read, think about

what they have read, and fully understand literary and informational passages independently and

proficiently.

Students have approximately 50-55 minutes to complete the reading comprehension section.

A- Reading Selection

The following points should be considered in the reading passage:

Should be selected based on the themes and skills specified in the English Language Curriculum

Can be authentic from sources such as magazines, journals, newspapers and books or adapted for

testing purposes

Can be one passage from a single source or a pair of related passages on a shared issue or theme;

one of the passages can support, oppose, complement, or in some way relate to the other

Should cover subjects from a wide range of academic content areas such as, natural sciences,

social studies and literature. It can be on a concrete or abstract topic.

Is followed by 4-6 sets of testing items; students will respond to questions on a single passage or

inter-textual questions on a pair of related passages.

Is preceded by a preview that introduces students to its content

Should range in length from 30-35 lines.

Challenging Level of the Reading selection

The reading passage is an important part of developing reading items for assessment. To ensure

that the passages used for assessment are appropriate for the level in question, different elements

should be considered. Appropriately challenging passages can be characterized by the following:

Multiple levels of meaning can be constructed.

Writer’s purpose is implicit.

Multiple themes or multiple perspectives are included.

Passage structure is unconventional or implicit. For example, more frequent use of

flashbacks, foreshadowing, multiple characters and different changes of scenes, time reference

and sequence of events.

Passage is at a challenging level in terms of semantics (vocabulary) and syntactic complexity

(sentence length).

Language conventionality relies on literary, academic or formal language rather than

conversational language; with frequent use of allusions and figurative language.

Knowledge demand for understanding the passage relies on academic and domain-specific

knowledge rather than on familiar knowledge.

Selection depends on experiences distinct from everyday experiences or simple situations

The English Test Sheet in My Hand

When you receive your English Test Sheet, take a deep breath, turn on your mind engines, and

work deliberately beginning with:

A. Read the heading that is written above the title of the text at hand carefully, because it puts you

in the general atmosphere of the topic developed in the text below.

Example: Read the selection below about the damage that tornadoes might cause and then answer the

questions that follow.

B. Read each of the paragraphs of the text carefully, trying to take notes about the main idea each

paragraph expresses/shows. Write these notes on a draft paper in your booklet.

C. Read the text for the second time where both the main and the secondary ideas of each

paragraph will be understood much better.

D. Then go for the comprehension questions where you have to fully understand each question

before giving your final answer. Each of these questions will be based on definite paragraph(s),

which means that you have to refer back to specific paragraph(s), not to the whole text, to be read

carefully again, and then come up with a meaningful answer.

Example: According to paragraph 5, what relieves the pressure on a building during a tornado?

Explain how.

5. If windows are open in the building, some of the inside air will rush out through them.

This will balance the pressure inside and outside the building. But if the windows are shut

tightly, the enormous inside pressure may cause the building to burst.

The Answer: Opening the windows relieves the pressure because the air that goes out will make a

balance between the inside and outside pressure.

Note: Avoid copy-paste answers because this might cause losing marks. Write the answer in your

own words based on the meaning of the written words in that paragraph.

We should know first that thesis statement is usually the last sentence of the introductory paragraph

and that sometimes it can’t be in the text, we are responsible to skim through the text and supply our

own thesis statement.

- Which sentence reflects the thesis statement? Justify your answer.

- Identify the thesis statement in the opening paragraph. Why does the writer place it where

it is?

1. Environmental issues caused by the harmful effects of human activities on the biophysical environment are

becoming increasingly more complicated worldwide, urging us to do something to protect the world we live in.

Yet, none of them can be compared to the problem of global warming. Global warming refers to the gradual

increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused

by increased levels of carbon dioxide and other pollutants. It is the greatest environmental challenge in the 21st

century that might lead to the ultimate end of the existence of life on earth. We all must realize the harsh reality of

this problem and take actions to stop it before it is too late. (Problem)

2. Research findings about global warming show that several greenhouse gases are responsible for warming the

earth. When these greenhouse gases pile up in the atmosphere, they trap some of the heat that comes from the

earth. Because the earth’s heat cannot escape, the planet warms up with serious consequences. The chief

contributor to these gases is carbon dioxide that forms a thickening blanket around the earth, trapping the heat and

raising the temperature of the earth. Other greenhouse gases include methane, generated by decaying refuse1 of

man and animals, and chloro-fluorocarbon (CFC) released from spraying cans. Unfortunately, some of the

modern technological applications, such as industrial processes of factories, vehicles exhaust fumes and many

other chemical malpractices have certainly increased the concentration of greenhouse gases. (Causes)

4. In fact, technology and materialistic gain have made us neglect our mother earth. It is time to reconsider our

attitudes towards the environment. We have to realize that we have much more in common with the plants,

animals, air and water than we have with the mechanical, chemical, and electronic world we have made around

us. We certainly have to make up our minds whether or not our future life should be based on the quantity of

harmful technology or the quality of natural environment we live in. What we need is a big step in the right

direction. Change only happens when individuals take actions. There’s no other way if it doesn’t start with

people. (Suggestions)

04- Sentence Completion Refer to the selection and then complete the following sentences.

1- Greenhouse gases are responsible for global warming because they ---------------------------.

2- The rise in sea levels that leads to coastal flooding is due to ------------------------------------.

Answer:

1- Greenhouse gases are responsible for global warming because when they add up in the atmosphere,

they trap some of the heat that comes from the earth.

2- The rise in sea levels that leads to coastal flooding is due to the melting of the ice cap at the poles.

05. EXTRACTS

Extract A

Extract B

The reading passage has 13 paragraphs (1 13). Each of the following extracts (A and B) is the

correct part that completes ONE paragraph in the passage. Read extracts A and B carefully and then

choose from paragraphs (1 13) the one that fits each extract.

Extract (A): The way of nurturing our son has its positive consequences not only on his life but also

on his country with all its images.

Extract (B): Such feelings were too painful to me, since they were the main part of my life that ended

with no mercy.

2- I had a son whose birth was truly a beautiful moment; our life became complete and we were so

happy. As years passed, my husband and I continued to work hard and provide our son with the best

possible education and comforts we could. Sam was growing up to be a very intelligent young man, who

highly respects his parents, cultures and religion. This was very important for us, and we felt all our

hard work paid off.

12- It has been over a year here now. Since then a few other Lebanese have arrived in the home. Sam

and Maria come and visit once a month with my grandson. I don’t know if this sounds bad but I would

rather they not visit. Every time they come and then leave, it’s like giving me that agony all over again.

Answer:

Extracts A confirms the idea of paragraph 2

Extracts B confirms the idea of paragraph 12

06. Pronoun References

What does each of the underlined pronouns refer to?

Read the sentence that includes the pronoun itself and the previous sentence carefully to guess the correct

reference of the indicated pronoun.

Example: This in paragraph 2 above.

Answer: Through reading the previous sentence, it’s become clear that the reference of the pronoun “This” is the

idea of respecting his parents, cultures, and religion.

07. Vocabulary Part

grandson, and this increases the level of sadness and despair in her heart and became more isolated.

08. SUMMARY

Below is a poor version of a one-sentence summary of paragraph 6. Rewrite it correctly.

The concept cars will be one of the main prime figures of the near future which is coming sooner or

later.

6. “Like most concept cars, the vehicles at CES are eye-catching platforms for the behind-the-scenes

technology that is still years away,” Hellwig said. But some of the technology isn’t so far off. The

Department of Transportation proposed rules that require all new cars on the road to digitally “speak” to

one another by 2020. This “vehicle-to-vehicle communication” allows cars to transmit data back and

forth so that each is aware when the other vehicle is rounding the corner or about to run a red

light.“Clearly the industry is moving in that direction. I don’t think that’s a question at all,” said Jeff

Schuster, an analyst at LMC Automotive. “I just think it’s a question of how quickly it becomes

mainstream and in the mass market.”

Corrected Summary: The writer in paragraph 6 of the text “Title…..” assures that although the

concept car will be one the main prime figures of the near future which is coming sooner or later, it has

its traces today with introducing vehicle-to-vehicle communication.

09. False Statements

The following statements are false because they misinterpret what is stated or implied in the selection.

Rewrite each correctly.

Example:

1- Today, university students are not allowed to choose the subjects they study.

and ignores scientific subjects produces robots.

Answer: 1- Today, university students are allowed to decide on the subjects they study.

2- Supporters of the traditional education believe that education which concentrates on

scientific subjects and ignores humanities produces robots.

### Think Critically, Then Answer:

10. The Tone (Voice or Mode) of the writer:

By tone we mean the attitude that a writer takes toward his topic or probably toward his reading

audience. Three people can write on the same topic: one might be serious, the other skeptical, and the

third light and humorous. So to know the tone of the writer, we should look at words (+ve and –ve

connotations).

The tone may be either formal (impersonal) or informal (personal).

1. The writer is serious (dealing with a serious issue related to …), neutral and objective (no

Page 8: New Model Intermediate Questions Based on New ......1 New Model Intermediate Questions Based on New Specifications Grades 7,8,9 Introduction: The key to doing well on tests is being

expression of the writer’s feeling but he depends only on examples …). He is totally formal and

impersonal.

2. The writer is subjective, personal, and formal.

- What is the writer’s tone in paragraph 5 of the above text?

- What is the general tone of the above text?

- What is the dominant mood in paragraph 5?

The writer seems serious, objective, and neutral. He is totally formal and impersonal. The text in

hand is scientific in nature; it tackles a serious issue related to “a scientific discovery” in an

objective and scientific manner. The writer, furthermore, seems to be supportive, encouraging,

and hopeful …. Then we show how in related to the paragraph or the text (other tones:

optimistic, overjoyed, positive, critical, frustrated, disappointed, skeptical, doubtful, uncertain,

rather pessimistic, worried, alarmed, scared, cautious, panic, concerned, ironic, …)

- What mood does the following paragraph convey? Explain.

On Tuesday, motorized, three- wheeled rickshaws were flying white Buddhist flags of mourning. Naval

guards in blue uniforms guarded store- fronts against looters. Young men in shorts and T- shirts poked

absently through the debris. Near Kalutara, hundreds of homeless fishing families took refuge at a temple on

a hillside a mile or two from the sea. Most of them slept on mats in the temple and relied on food donated by

the Buddhists.

Answer: This paragraph conveys a mood of sadness, melancholy, and depression/ sorrow. Diction helps

in depicting that mood "… flags of mourning," " poked absently through the debris," …

11. Figures of Speech

Some of the most used figures of speech are:

1. Simile: it’s a comparison of two unlike things in which a word of comparison (as or like) is used.

(ex: Sweet as tropic winds at night)

2. Metaphor: it’s a comparison of two unlike tings in which no word of comparison (as or like) is

used. (ex: love is a rose)

3. Personification: it’s to describe an animal, object, or idea as if it were a human. (ex: Even his

words now danced in glee)

4. Irony: it’s to say something but mean the opposite.

- Verbal irony is a trope in which the intended meaning of a statement differs from the meaning

that the words appear to express. (ex: As pleasant and relaxed as a coiled rattlesnake)

- Situational irony involves an incongruity between what is expected or intended and what

actually occurs. (ex: Although he graduated from Cambridge with a degree as a minister in

1831, Charles Darwin could not suppress his passion for science.)

5. Antithesis: it’s a figure of speech used in literature to depict an opposition or contrast, of ideas. (ex:

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of

foolishness)

Page 9: New Model Intermediate Questions Based on New ......1 New Model Intermediate Questions Based on New Specifications Grades 7,8,9 Introduction: The key to doing well on tests is being

9

Figures of speech have usually two purposes:

• To beautify.

• To convey the writer’s opinion.

- Select from paragraph 3 a figure of speech, identify it, and then state its function.

The writer uses a metaphor (half-baked ideas a decade ago) to show that research to discover

new effective drugs to face cancer are still incomplete.

The writer uses a metaphor (fantastic voyage into the heart of the cancer cell) to show that

scientists have gone too far in their discoveries of new drugs against cancer.

The writer uses personification (smart bombs for targeting deadly tumors). The smart bombs

refer to the newly discovered drugs to hit cancer cells, designate the target accurately.

The writer uses a metaphor (alphabet soup) to show how complex the human body is.

The writer uses a metaphor (we navigate the snow-covered side-covered sidewalks … he plows

straight ahead). Such a metaphor reinforces the swiftness and ease of movement with artificial

machines.

- There is an obvious touch of irony in sentence 3 of paragraph 2. What is ironical about it?

The writer uses irony in the following sentence: ‘’if this happens, global warming would,

ironically, produce global cooling-and bring on a deep freeze’’ in order to show that one of the

consequences of global warming is the ice melt at south and north poles which interrupts the

Gulf stream that warms north Europe thus resulting in global cooling.

Example:

"Suddenly, a 30 – feet wall of water raced inland," says the writer in the sixth paragraph.

What is the figurative language device used in the sentence above? Explain.

Answer: It is a metaphor. The writer is indirectly comparing the tsunami to an athlete/ runner. The

word "racing" implies that the high wave is compared to a person who is running fast OR It is a

personification. The huge wave is personified as a person who …

12. Types of Evidence

The writer in the above text relies heavily on live examples, facts, and statistical figures. Why does

he resort to this technique?

The writer uses live examples (or statistics, quoting experts … etc) to:

Achieve credibility.

Give his text a big touch of authenticity (realism).

Avoid bias or prejudice.
