The University of Georgia’s commitment to host the James C. Grimm National Housing Training Institute (NHTI) concludes with the Summer, 2015 Institute. We appreciate Georgia’s dedication to continuing a high-quality program that follows a decade hosted by the University of Maryland and a decade at the founding institution of the University of Florida.

In preparation for the upcoming transition of NHTI, we have recently completed a comprehensive analysis in an effort to build a structure that not only best meets the needs of our members, but also balances sometimes conflicting key priorities of the program.

Over the past several months, we have collected a wide range of data to help guide the decision-making process. As we have reviewed and analyzed these data, it is clear our membership takes pride in NHTI, and graduates feel that they have benefited a great deal from participating in this immersive experience. Based on the data we synthesized, the prevailing priority was to maintain the small, high-quality experience of NHTI.

In addition to answering a number of questions about the structure of NHTI, the data also demonstrated an overwhelming need to expand access to this important developmental experience for our members. We discovered:

4 For the NHTI Model to work, an intimate, immersive experience is necessary.

4 Members are applying multiple times before being selected.

4 There are over three times as many applications as there are available spaces in the current model.

4 We generate significant animosity around the perception of exclusivity and elitism from those not being selected to participate that goes against the core values of the Association.

4 This is a critical professional development experience for our young professionals, and it is limited to only 30 individuals each year.

Based on the data, and our analysis of different models, structures, and processes, the Executive Board unanimously approved a new model for the NHTI Program. This model will include:

F A centralized leadership team, including an NHTI Committee Chair, the ACUHO-I Director of Research and Education, and 4 committee members selected from the ACUHO-I Membership at-large serving staggered 3-year terms.

F Two Host Institutions would each host NHTI on their campuses for a period of 3 years. Additionally, a Director from each host institution will serve on the NHTI Committee.

To assist you in better understanding the revised structure, and the data used in this decision-making process, we have made available a number of documents used in our analysis on the NHTI Section of the ACUHO-I Homepage.

Committee Selection. In early May, we will announce a call for applications to serve on the NHTI Committee, so that we may select the leadership for this important educational experience prior to the Annual Conference and Exposition in Washington, D.C. This call for applications will include a brief description for each position/role on the committee.

Host Institution Selection. In June, we will publish a request for proposals for host campuses. This RFP will include the needs and expectations of campuses who are interested in hosting NHTI starting in the Summer of 2016 for a 3-year period. To assist campuses in learning more about the new structure and what it takes to host NHTI, we will be holding an NHTI Partner Host Institutions Information Session during the Annual Conference and Exposition in Washington, D.C. Applications to serve as a Host Institution will be due in Early Fall.

We believe this new structure will further enhance the excellent work of the Universities of Georgia, Maryland and Florida, by continuing to provide a small, intimate, high-quality NHTI experience, but double the number of our members who are able to participate in this experience each year, both as faculty and young professionals.

We look forward to sharing with you more about the new structure, applications for the committee, and the request for proposals from campuses as it becomes available.
