Like the highly successfulSD45 diesel, each driver

axle has its own gearbox foradded pulling strength andreliability. By transferringpower to all eight drivewheels, designers were ableto give the side rods andvalve gear morerealistic proportionsbecause they’restrictly forappearance; this alsoreduces maintenanceneeds. And since all drivers pick upelectrical power from the rails, the “Mike”performs as well as any Aristo-Craft diesel.

It takes Plentyof Water to Runa Steam-EraRailroadFrom the days of the earlieststeam locomotives, water tankshave been an important part of therailroad scene. At one time,everyone knew what these iconsof the steam era were for—not justrailroaders and enthusiasts. Eventelevision used one in the openingcredits of a popular show called“Petticoat Junction.” Two newBuilt-up water tanks—one in HO,the other in N Scale—will helpyou add steam-era authenticity toyour pike in minutes.

A Vintage Tank for any HO PikeBefore 1900, locomotives weresmall and had a limited watercapacity, so small tanks weresufficient. As larger locomotivescame along, larger tanks did too.Wood water tanks peaked at about50,000 gallons; after the 1920s,larger steel tanks replaced theirsmaller wood counterparts atcertain locations. Along branchesand secondary lines, large woodtanks lasted until the end of steam,and a handful still stand abandonedor serving other purposes.

The new Cornerstone Series®

Built-up Wood Water Tank is atypical 50,000-gallon tank,making it suitable for layouts setbetween 1900 and the late 1950s.Details include a frost box underits center (this enclosureprotected the supply pipe fromfreezing), a base with concretefootings, a positionable spout andrealistic water level markings. For

added authenticity, the tanks arecolored to complement otherCornerstone Series Built-uprailroad structures.

A New Tank in N ScaleBy the 1920s, plate steel becamecheap enough for use on watertanks. With new, larger steamlocomotives coming into service,low-maintenance steel tanksoffered higher capacity forincreased water needs. They werealso versatile because they couldbe placed in a central location

and supply locomotives via watercolumns (standpipes) connectedto underground piping. This wasespecially handy in crampedspaces near major terminals andservicing facilities.

On your layout, the Steel WaterTank brings this same authenticityto any post-1920s servicing scene.With its massive, riveted-steelbody and latticework supports, itadds a heavy-industrial look alongyour tracks. Because of theirdurability, many of these venerabletanks still supply water formaintenance crews and shops,making the model a natural onmodern layouts too. The new NScale Built-up model includes twowater columns and, as a bonus, anoil column. Oil columns wereusually placed near water columns,but were fed by separate tanks.

The Steel Water Tank is alsoavailable in HO and O Scales as aCornerstone Series kit thatincludes the tank plus a pair ofwater columns. ■

Add Pennsy Flavor to any pre-1960s Passenger TrainThe “Standard Railroad of theWorld,” as the PennsylvaniaRailroad was called, was anythingbut standard. Off-the-shelflocomotives and rolling stock justweren’t good enough; the Pennsyhad to do things its own way. Oneexample of the PRR’s unique,home-built cars was the R50BExpress Reefer.

In 1929 the Pennsy rolled out 550class R50B Express Refrigeratorcars. These chunky cars featuredriveted sides, a curved roofline,heavy cast door hinges andPennsy’s own 2D-P5 trucks. They didn’t look anything like

typical steel RailwayExpress Agency express reefersused by other railroads. TheR50Bs were PRR’s contributionto the Railway Express Agency(REA) pool. They operated notonly on the PRR, but also on

connecting railroads’ passengertrains as late as 1968. Sightings inLos Angeles, Seattle and, asshown in the accompanying“Typical Consist,” Kansas City,were commonplace.

R50Bs seldom ran on premiertrains like the Super Chief or theEmpire Builder; they usuallyserved on workhorse passengertrains that handled mail andexpress. The trains worked keystations along their routes,picking up and dropping carsalong the way. Local freight trainshandled the cars between thestations, produce packing houses

and cold storage facilities.

On yourlayout, theseoperations give you theopportunity to turn a passengertrain into a working train that

switches out cars at major stationsalong the line.

Virtually any layout can be enhanced with the rightfigures. And by combining them with other elements, youcan create detailed mini-scenes that add to the fun. Thenew Scenic Accents HO Scale figures and accessoriesby Woodland Scenics include all kinds of products tobuild unique scenes along your railroad.

Starting with a good idea and a lot of ambition, Bar Millsintroduced its first period sign kits in 2000. Modelers were soonimpressed by the unique combination of laser-cut parts, preprintedcolor artwork and complete instructions.
