But there will be no backing off, Henry said, from UNM’s man-to-man coverage behind a blitzing front. … In their victories over NMSU the past four years, the Lobos have averaged 419 yards rushing. With UNM hav- ing rushed for 428 yards in their season-opening victory over South Dakota, and with the Aggies having given up 249 yards rushing last Saturday to UTEP’s Aaron Jones, that trend seems destined to con- tinue. But UNM quarterback Austin Apodaca said he sees a more mature, more confident NMSU defense than in 2015. ROBERTO E. QB Tyler Rogers was generally solid, but a shaky outing by his receivers and a rushing attack without star back Larry Rose III (sports hernia surgery) too often failed to produce. Junior college transfer Jaleel Scott played well of the bench at wideout, but NMSU’s start- ers must get separation and hold on to passes if the offense is to start clicking. The Aggies dropped nine passes at UTEP and can ill-afford another case of butterfingers this week. Freshman Jason Huntley (14) showed good burst, but the Aggies must pass effec- tively to set up the run game. … Defensively, NMSU must tackle better to avoid the long plays that proved deadly at UTEP. Linebackers Rodney Butler, Terrill Hanks and safety Jacob Nwangwa were top per- formers vs. the Miners. CREDIT SCOUTING THE LOBOS SCOUTING THE AGGIES

Lobo safety Daniel Henry (14) said coach Bob Davie had the UNM defense watch a film “cut-up” of every play the NMSU offense ran for more than 10 yards the past two seasons. “It was one of those things that make you sick,” Henry said, vowing that the Lobo “D” will greatly reduce that number tonight. But there will be no backing off, Henry said, from UNM’s man-to-man coverage behind a blitzing front.

… In their victories over NMSU the past four years, the Lobos have averaged 419 yards rushing. With UNM hav-ing rushed for 428 yards in their season-opening victory over South Dakota, and with the Aggies having given up 249 yards rushing last Saturday to UTEP’s Aaron Jones, that trend seems destined to con-tinue. But UNM quarterback Austin Apodaca said he sees a more mature, more confident NMSU defense than in 2015.

Inconsistency plagued New Mexico State in its season-opening loss to UTEP, particularly on offense. QB Tyler Rogers was generally solid, but a shaky outing by his receivers and a rushing attack without star back Larry Rose III (sports hernia surgery) too often failed to produce.

Junior college transfer Jaleel Scott played well of the bench at wideout, but NMSU’s start-ers must get separation and hold on to passes if the offense

is to start clicking. The Aggies dropped nine passes at UTEP and can ill-afford another case of butterfingers this week.

Freshman Jason Huntley (14) showed good burst, but the Aggies must pass effec-tively to set up the run game.

… Defensively, NMSU must tackle better to avoid the long plays that proved deadly at UTEP. Linebackers Rodney Butler, Terrill Hanks and safety Jacob Nwangwa were top per-formers vs. the Miners.
