Catholic tradition and our values used to have a lot of influence in our daily lives. We tend to take it for granted many a time. But the present age we are in is very manipulative. There are many ways this age and its sneaky liberal agenda try to displace our traditional Christian values from our lives. Social media is the vehicle. The addictive power of social media is contagious. Not only the younger generation but even the adults are victims of its influence.

For example, just consider the abortion issue. The liberal agenda group convinces the woman that it is her right to decide to keep the baby or not. They will never entertain a discussion about the dignity of an unborn, helpless human being They will not talk about the morality and immorality of having sex outside marriage.. They will not encourage the use of Natural Family Planning methods to couples who are not ready for babies. They only promote abortion and contraceptives. You know the beneficiaries. Sales sky rocket in the contraceptive market. The abortion industry reaps huge profits as well. Vociferously advocating woman’s right and freedom, they ignore the inalienable rights of an unborn human being ! When the abortion industry butchers a fully developed human baby, they vehemently justify it asserting the woman’s freedom of choice!

The irony is, the animal activists who move the whole world against cruelty to an animal, conveniently ignore the miserable murder of an unborn human baby. So in the liberal market human life is not as valuable as that of an animal! Who profits? The abortion industry and the contraceptive market!

On the sidewalks and in the parks we used to see women jogging with babies in strollers. It is a rear sight these days. Now women jog with puppies. Couples sleep with puppies. There is a lot of kissing and licking the faces too. No worry about hygiene or sanitation!

Nobody reviews the huge commercial plot behind. Human babies quickly grow out of their clothes and wean off the formulas. For the puppies you buy the same thing over and over as long as they live. While humans challenge your selfishness, animals enhance your self-gratification instinct. Has anyone thought about the value displacement happening in this transfer of affection ?

We must promote critical thinking in our children that will lead to value clarification which will help them to become better Catholics and true disciples of Jesus. This is how we prepare to celebrate the Coming of Jesus at Christmas. God bless you all.

From the Pastor’s Desk / Del Escritorio del Padre

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Occasionally, someone raises a surprised complaint that while Christmas arrives on Santa’s sleigh at the Macy’s parade on Thanksgiving Day, the Church doesn’t catch on too fast. They may even say that Advent is a new-fangled idea. Not so. To trace its beginnings, we have to go back to the fourth or fifth century in France (then Gaul), when Epiphany was the favored day, next to Easter, for baptism. The old pagan structures of Rome were collapsing then, and many people sought to be baptized. Since adults always prepared for baptism by fasting, folks counted back a few weeks for a kind of retreat. Before too long, bishops were advising everyone to attend church frequently beginning on December 17. Soon, artists were imagining ways of expressing the Advent mystery, and in Italy this gave rise to beautiful mosaics of empty thrones awaiting the arrival of the Lord of all creation.

Advent as we know it develops on two separate tracks: the first having to do with our spiritual preparation for celebrating the Christmas feast, and the second having to do with the way this is organized and expressed in the liturgical readings and prayers every day of the season. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THE PROMISE OF JUSTICE

We are in fairly good company when we ask God for justice. Often enough we hear and agree with the lament of the people of Israel asking God why the wicked prosper. However, when we call out for justice, we usually want someone to get his or her comeuppance. God’s justice is something other than this, of course. God’s justice comprises a wonderful rightness between God and humankind.

Today, Jeremiah looks ahead to a time when a just one will sprout from the shorn-off stump of Jesse of the house and family of David. Life was not fair in Jeremiah’s time. Israel’s kings held the promise of God’s fidelity, but it was difficult to see how God’s promise could be realized through them.

Nevertheless, Jeremiah lifts his voice and announces that the Promised One will come. Luke’s Gospel echoes that announcement, and Paul is filled with sturdy encouragement. And so Advent begins with a promise. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
