Civic League President’s Resignation By John W. Robertson, Vice-President

I am sorry to inform you that our re-cently-elected President, Lindsey Flaherty, has tendered her resignation, saying “My work has become busier the last couple of months, requiring more of my attention on the evenings and weekends. I do not ex-pect it slack off anytime soon. I am not able to give this position the attention that it deserves.” Anyone who knows the pas-sion and dedication Lindsey brings to her growing law practice will not be surprised at her difficult decision, and the Board thanks her for her service. Lindsey will continue to be involved with the Civic League, most notably in the efforts to place our beautifully-repaired mermaid, Lady Anne, in her new location at the Dela-ware and Colonial circle. As provided in our By-laws, the Vice President will assume the duties of leading the Civic League until we are able to hold a special election to fill the President ’s position.

Pick up your Dog’s Poo! 8 Reasons Why

1) Storm water carries pet waste and other pol-lutants directly into waterways.

2) Animal waste adds nitrogen to the water. Excess nitrogen depletes the oxygen in water necessary for beneficial underwater grasses, wildlife and fish.

3) Animal waste may contain harmful organ-isms such as Giardia, Salmonella and E. coli that can be transmitted to humans and other animals by ingesting contaminated water.

4) Roundworms and hookworms deposited by infected animals can live in the soil for long periods of time and be transmitted to other animals and humans.

5) Norfolk has an ordinance that requires own-ers to pick up after their pet.

6) No one likes to step in pet waste and spread it into homes, cars and businesses.

7) It’s easy to clean up by carrying plastic bag-gies and paper towels in your pocket. The baggies can be secured and thrown away in the garbage.

8) Your neighbors will appreciate your good manners!

Vice-President John Robertson called the meeting to order at 6:30pm. President Lindsey Fla-herty was unable to attend the meeting.

V-P Robertson reported on the Tri-Neighborhood Picnic sponsored by the Norfolk Police Department. It will be held Saturday, October 10th at Larchmont Elementary School. Residents of Colonial Place, Riverview, Larchmont and Highland Park are invited and encouraged to attend.

Treasurer Pete Stoll reported that income for August was $1,925.09 and expenses were $517.17, leaving the Civic League with a balance, including the CD, of $16,690.38.

Membership Committee chair, Tobie Serafim, reported that we have 186 members, and that she will start sending out renewal notices in early De-cember.

Welcome Committee chair, Linda Daniel, report-ed that there were four new families in the neigh-borhood.

V-P John Robertson reported on the status of the mermaid project, advising that the Civic League needed to provide the City with a site plan, which Jack Kennedy was preparing.

The Annual Front Porch Art Walk is scheduled for Sunday, October 11th.

Officer Carrie Magalang reported that last month there had been an attempted robbery in the neigh-borhood. She encouraged everyone to attend the picnic on October 10th, and advised that there would be many different activities including a dunk tank, kick ball games, bomb squad demonstrations, as well as food and drink. She was asked if the Police Department had many complaints regarding Lou’s Bar on Colley Avenue and she stated that it was be-ing investigated by the City’s Bar Task Force. Officer Magalang distributed information regarding the

police department undergoing an on-site assess-ment as part of its accreditation process and en-couraged citizen input and participation.

A question was asked about the raccoon contro-versy, and V-P Robertson advised that the civic league was not directly involved in the issue.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
