Park Life

February brings, amongst other events, St Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year and half term (already!) For some of us long-suffering-rugby-widows, it also sees the start of the Six Nations tournament. My girls and I get to watch more than our fair share of rugby throughout the year (some of it in Welsh) but it is the Six Nations which is the biggie. My OH (other half) grew up in Wales, to Irish parents, moved to England and married a Scottish girl whose brother lives in Italy. We always have someone to support in our house. Passions run high. Wish me luck! We’ve a couple of new competitions this month – check out the index opposite –and a great variety of articles, including a new column ‘Ask the Builder’ and a recipe from our very own Chicco Cafe. Thanks so much to everyone who contributes – sorry we couldn’t fit you all in this month.I do hope you enjoy this edition, and continue to support the local businesses who advertise, and without whom we wouldn’t have this great community magazine.Enjoy!Jenny StuartEditor & publisher

Thank you to the residents of Malden & Coombe The Royal British Legion would like to say a big “Thank You” to all the residents of Malden & Coombe for their very generous donations and support of the Poppy Appeal The amount collected in Malden amounted to £27,317.32p. This

was a magnificent sum so thank you all. The Appeal does not of course close at the end of the two weeks allocated in November for collecting but goes on until the end of September 2011. If anyone feels they could hold a coffee morning or any other means of helping to raise more money for the Appeal please do so and if any shop would like to have an “all year round” collecting box for the counter please get in touch with Mrs J Fairclough on 020 8395 4437 who would gladly supply one for you. If any individual feels they are able to contribute anything during the coming months it would be gratefully received. Names for next November’s collection would also be appreciated if you feel you spare a couple of hours, every little thing helps. It is the RBL’s 90th Birthday this year and Malden & Coombe were one of the founder members of the Legion. All our members are geting older and we would like if possible to recruit one or two younger people to try and carry one the work of the Legion locally, it would be a shame to let this Branch die out after 90 years If you feel you could spare an hour or two once a month to come along to our meetings we would be very pleased to see you. The meetings are held on the second Wednesday afternoon every month, at the Grafton Club from 2.30pm. We hope to hold some social evenings during the summer so that anyone who is still working could come and join us. Anyone who would like more information could they please contact Mary Gillett on 020 8949 2342.

Thank You All from the Rotary Club The President of New Malden Rotary Club (A registered Charity) would like to thank the residents of New Malden for their generosity during the Santa Clause street collections and the Saturday collections outside the Co-Op.The net sum raised was £6,669 which is an excellent result particularly as one street collection was abandoned and a collection outside the Co-Op was

curtailed owing to the bad weather. The proceeds together

with other fund raising throughout the year will go towards supporting many local causes and also some international charities. Local causes include Christmas Gift vouchers for the needy, Christmas meals at local Churches, support for schools including the Youth Speaks Competition, the Fircroft Trust, the Mary Preston Holiday scheme and funding the High Street Christmas lights. International help includes Shelter Boxes, Mercy Ships and Excellent Development.”

If you go down to the woods...

history These days if you take a walk along Warren Road, the only sound of conflict you may hear is a golf club hitting a ball, sometimes followed by some mild cursing. But if you were to wind back the clock two hundred years, you might be surprised by the sights and sounds you could see in Coombe Warren and Coombe Wood.

Yes, there were large houses such as Warren House, and Coombe House (the country home of the Prime Minister Lord Liverpool), but away from these magnificent properties, conflict at its most raw was taking place.

Jerry Abershaw an infamous highwayman who had used the London to Portsmouth road as his base for robberies had been executed in 1795, but the area was still regarded by some, as a wild and dangerous place.

A matter of honourReputation and honour were very important especially amongst the upper classes. If that reputation was tainted

either by word, or action, an apology could be requested, and failing that satisfaction in the form of a duel. Duels had been held in large open spaces such as Hyde Park, but as they were illegal, many parties decided to take their disputes out of the confines of the city. Coombe Wood had long been selected

as a suitable venue.

One such duel was between Sir Francis Burdett and James Paull. Burdett had supported Paull as a candidate for the seat of Westminster at the election of 1807, so much so that Paull had advertised Burdett as chairman of an election meeting, but without asking him. When Burdett did not turn up, and sent his brother in his place, Paull took this as a slight, and demanded satisfaction at Coombe Wood on 2nd May. When Burdett still refused to apologise after their first shots both missed, the pistols were reloaded, and both men were wounded in the resultant “shootout”. As no medical personnel were present, the two men were taken back to town in the same carriage, probably still arguing.

Another dispute was between Lord Petersham (Charles Stanhope) and James Webster Wedderburne. Petersham who in those days would be described as a “dandy” had been flirting with James’ wife Frances. She had previously been romantically involved with both Lord Byron, and the Duke Of Wellington, but Petersham’s attentions proved too much for James who proceeded to literally “horse whip” Petersham along the length of St James Street in London. For this Petersham demanded satisfaction, and the two met at Coombe Wood on 21st April 1821. Both men fired a single shot which missed their target, and the contest was then ended.

Clash of the bladesWhile pistols were normally the chosen weapons for the nobility, some members of the armed forces continued to use swords. That was the case at a duel between General Guglielmo Pepe and General Michele Carascosa held at Coombe Wood on 28th February 1823. Both men were members of the Neapolitan army; Carascosa had accused Pepe of encouraging revolution in Spain, but far worse of damaging his (Carascosa’s) reputation. They had tried to sort out their dispute the previous week, but in the midst of their duel, General Pepe’s sword had broken near the guard, and their seconds intervened, terminating the duel.

The contest was resumed the following week at Coombe, and during the course of the contest Pepe grabbed his opponent’s sword, disarmed him, and placed his own sword against Carascosa’s chest thinking he had won. But Carascosa then picked up his own sword, and continued fighting; he was only stopped by a wound inflicted in his right shoulder caused by his opponent’s blade.

Boxing daysWhile the nobility and the army were fighting duels in one part of Coombe Wood, another area was being used for bare-knuckle fighting or pugilism by others. Many travelling fairs had a boxing ring, and locals were encouraged to take on the “champion” for a prize, normally either money or beer. They were many takers encouraged by their friends. But the world of the “professional” prize-fighter was much tougher with greater rewards.

The first recorded fight in Coombe Wood took place

on 9th April 1809 in a 25 ft ring (most rings for professional fights

today are between 18 and 20 foot). The combatants were Bill Richmond from America, and Isaac Wood a waterman from London. One of the “seconds” for the Londoner was Bill Cribb then the Champion of England, so it was a real international contest. The fight lasted for 23 rounds and ended when Wood was unable to rise to his feet. Fighting in those days seems to have been more of a brawl than an athletic contest. Wood had been knocked down many times, and had twice been sent over the ropes.

These contests became more widely known and were reported in the national newspapers. The crowds attending also grew rapidly. The venue for the fights moved from the wooded area of Coombe to the more open area of The Warren. On October 13th 1813 an attendance of 10,000 spectators was recorded at a fight between Jack Lancaster and Dan Marten. The fighters did not disappoint, as the contest lasted three hours and thirty five minutes, with 195 rounds! Marten was knocked down 100 times, but was declared the winner when Lancaster could not come out for the 196th round. The damage these men did to each other was horrific. The reward was twenty guineas, plus a collection from among

the spectators. It is not recorded whether the loser received anything.

It was obvious that some form of organisation was needed, if only for the welfare of these fighters, and to also make suitable arrangements for these occasions. The Pugilistic Club was formed in 1814, and one of their first acts was to present a purse of £50 for a fight at Coombe Wood on May 3rd that year between Bill Richmond (then 52 years old) and Davis a much younger man. The occasion was much more organised than previous contests, with members of the new club wearing a blue and buff uniform, and those appointed to work outside the ring wearing blue ribbons to identify themselves. The stakes which held the ropes of the ring (about five foot high) were painted with the initials PC (Pugilistic Club). The contest lasted thirteen rounds (around 20 minutes), with Richmond declared the winner when Davis could not get up.

Probably the most memorable day for those involved in these contests at Coombe was on 13th February 1817 when royalty came to watch a fight between John Crockey and Young Fisher. The Grand Duke Nicholas Of

Russia (later the Czar) who had been invited to attend, was seated in a covered wagon flying the Royal Standard. The contest lasted 58 rounds (around 70 minutes) and was won by Fisher. Afterwards he was introduced to the Duke who congratulated him, shaking him by the hand. The Duke was then introduced to the barbaric sport of bull baiting, which fortunately ended prematurely when the bull escaped, and scattered the spectators. The contests seem to have been less frequent after 1820, and ended altogether when Coombe Wood was sold to the Duke Of Cambridge in 1836, and the estate was used for the shooting of game birds. So the next time you walk along Warren Road, look for a bullet mark in one of the trees, or better still a tooth on the ground. You now know where they may have come from.

As with anything it is not until it affects you closely or someone close to you that you want to find out more about it and pray that a cure will be found.

Last year my husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He had been experiencing a tremour in his right hand for some years but so did his mother, so we ignored it, mistake number one. He also used to get bad cramps in his legs at night and on long journeys in the car. He started to find writing difficult as he could not hold a pen very easily, he could not grip the computer mouse, his right arm did not swing when he walked and I found that he spoke very quietly. It was last Christmas, 2009, when I thought that his slippers must be getting loose as he shuffled along that I thought I must buy him some slippers but actually he was dragging his right foot as he walked. He went to see his GP who mentioned that it might be Parkinson’s disease and that she would refer him to the neurologist and he was sent an appointment very quickly.

The neurologist thought that he did have a hereditary tremor but she also thought it might be Parkinson’s disease. She checked his reflexes, his walk, his writing and his strength in his arm. She took a thorough medical history, bloods and he had a brain scan to ensure it was not a tumour. She confirmed that it was in fact Parkinson’s disease and started him on medication to halt the disease getting any worse. But how could this happen, my husband was only 43 years of age? We had twins aged 6, he had recently retrained as a teacher and he had supported me through breast cancer treatment. How could I have missed it, a nurse of over 30 years experience?

We found out that Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition and that one person in every 500 has the disease, about 120,000 people in the UK. Most people who are diagnosed are over 50 years of age but only one in 20 is under the age of 40. It is caused by part of the brain degenerating, and not producing a chemical called Dopamine. Without dopamine, people slow up, experience shakes, have difficulties with their speech, fall and feel dizzy, have restless legs, have difficulty swallowing their saliva, and may have sleep problems.

At this time there is no known cure and the doctors do not know what causes it. Patients are prescribed Leva Dopa which helps replace dopamine but cannot stimulate the brain to produce more so at the present time they must take it for the rest of their lives.

There has been recent research regarding the Nintendo Wii fit and according to the Parkinson’s UK site; ‘Many

people with Parkinson's have told us that using a Nintendo Wii games console helps them with their balance, movements and mood’. There is research going on all the time to find a cure.

I am doing some fund raising as is my friend Tanja Williamson, whose father also has Parkinson’s disease. I am doing a raffle at work and Tanja and her husband, Graham are doing sponsored runs so please let us know if you wish to support us or go straight to the Parkinson’s UK web site, www.parkinsons.org.uk, where you can make donations.

Finally, please join me in praying for a cure. VVoice

having your hair styled at home.

As a fully qualifi ed Hairdresserand colour specialist I can

offer you professional resultsat affordable rates.

This treatment has astounded both my clients and myself. For the first time we can truly eliminate frizz and unwanted volume.

For those of you who have to spend ages blow drying and straightening your hair this is the treatment for you. Once treated with the pure keratin conditioner blow drying becomes a 5 minute pleasure with long lasting results - no more frizzing in the rain!!

The Beox professional treatment takes about 2 hours to complete. First your hair is washed with a clarifying shampoo, this removes any product build up. The treatment is then applied allowing the keratin molecules to penetrate into the hair shaft. The final steps are to blow dry and flat iron the hair, this ensures that the keratin molecules are sealed into the hair. - Creating beautiful, shiny and manageable hair!

by Polly Hood

Beox professional can be used on any chemically treated hair including highlights, relaxed, Yuko and bleached. In

fact I would recommend it for coloured or otherwise dry hair. It aids condition and adds shine and longevity to your colour. However don’t try to have both processes done together, leave a week between treatments and I would suggest colouring first.

Beox Professional is registered in the UK and has undergone health and safety assessment to ensure it meets UK cosmetic regulation.

“A date that is pleasantly noteworthy or memorable”. That’s the dictionary definition of a red-letter day.

But on our allotment site, red letters have an altogether different meaning. Of the red-rag variety. It’s all to do with standards of cultivation.

When you become a plot holder, you enter a contract with the allotment Association. One of the main conditions of your tenancy is to maintain your plot to an “acceptable standard of cultivation and fertility”. The allotment Association committee carries out periodic reviews of the site and writes to tenants whose plots appear not to be meeting this condition. A first letter expresses mild concern, but if the tenant makes no contact in response or takes no action, then it’s on to a final warning: the dreaded red letter.

Defining an “acceptable “ standard is the single most contentious issue for members of our Association. I was blissfully ignorant of this when the committee first asked me and a couple of others to take on responsibility for the site review. Armed with a plan of the site and a copy of the regulations, we toured the 150 plots together. Some were a joy to behold: perfectly tended patches with neat rows of vegetables , fruit bushes dripping with berries, manicured paths and edges, colourful flowers. No problem there, we agreed. It was just as easy to spot the ones at the other end of the spectrum, those where the tenants had clearly given up.

The really difficult cases lie in the grey (or should that be green?) area between the two extremes. Where should the line be drawn when judging what’s acceptable and what’s not in terms of how a plot is used and maintained? Take boundaries, for example. We are supposed to keep paths adjacent to our plot free from rubbish and weeds. Nothing contentious about that, surely? Oh yes there is, if over the years the adjacent path has been blocked by someone’s compost heap, or turned into an avenue of grapevines.

People’s interpretation of “active cultivation” varies enormously. There are the seasonally overactive plot holders, who come mainly in the summer months to cultivate suspiciously large quantities of a single crop. Since commercial cultivation is against the regulations, the charitable view would be that they are feeding huge families on a lettuce-only

diet. The holiday-active come in the school breaks just to pick the “free” blackberries and

plums on offer. Blue-mooners pay rare weekend visits, spend the day strimming noisily and then vanish. And then there are the plots of the actively unproductive. Grass trimmed and beds dug but -- and

this is what’s so strange - always virtually empty.

Meanwhile, the rest of us are starting to venture back onto the site to dig or just potter. It doesn’t take long to feel at home, to think of the allotment as our private property. Only it isn’t. It’s a treasure on loan we

need to care for together. VVoice

Mike Taylor (local resident and Director of building company ‘Mode’) answers your questions about construction and development work in New Malden

Q. I’ve been watching with interest the current re-development of the Baptist Church on Westbury Road and have been impressed by the speed of the build. Can this type of building be applied to residential properties?

A. It appears that the redevelopment of the Baptist Church you mention has in part been constructed from SIPs. Structurally Insulated Panels are used to create ecologically (and in this case ecumenically) friendly buildings. The use of SIP's leads to many advantages including dramatically reduced heating bills, reduced carbon emissions and very fast build times, compared to more conventional methods of construction. The composite panels are made from sheets of OSB (oriented strand board) sandwiching a polyurethane insulation core. SIPs are not new (first invented in 1935) and they have been popular in the US and in many Scandinavian countries where they are used as the primary construction method for building residential homes.

Building with SIPs is gaining popularity within the UK. However it is more often used in larger projects within the commercial sector. Due to their many cost saving advantages, speed of construction and green credentials such high insulative values, they are beginning to be used within the residential market, such as self build. With and ever increasing demand for more space and a continuing trend for people to work from home, SIPs can be used as a very cost effective way of creating a warm, secure and stylish home office, playroom, gym or garden room at the end of the garden. Subject to planning requirements, there are many opportunities for this method of construction to be used more widely to create extensions to existing homes and even form the basis of a loft conversion. If you'd like to find out more about any aspect of building, refurbishment are would like to have your own SIP building and don’t already have a builder then please don't hesitate to call MODE BUILD LTD – please see our ad opposite Otherwise, email your questions through to ‘Ask the Builder’ at [email protected] VVoice

Croydon Animal Samaritans is a Registered Charity that has been helping and rescuing animals since 1974. We have many volunteers all working hard to rescue, foster and re-home all animals taken into our care. The Charity’s ethos is ‘the rescuing, sheltering and provision of veterinary care for unwanted or abandoned animals and, wherever possible to find them suitable homes”. We have a number of foster carers across Surrey and one of these is in Worcester Park.

Angela Jennings has been volunteering with the charity for four years now and lives in Worcester Park. Angela says: “I have been fostering cats for Croydon Animal Samaritans and have

Can you give a cat a home?croydonanimalsamaritans.co.uk

charitiescared for 18 cats over that time. I have a cabin in my

garden in Worcester Park, which is heated and has a small exercise run. I am a mother of 3 boys, work part-time and I find looking after and re-homing the cats in my care very rewarding. Indeed my whole family gets involved in the charities work in one way or another either by helping to care for the cats in my care or by giving them love and cuddles. The Charity relies totally on donations and help from volunteers like myself to re-home the animals in our care. Animals come into mine

and the other fosterers care for all sorts of reasons from job loss, marriage breakdown or bereavement. The current financial crisis has meant that we have also seen an increase in the volume of animals that need our help”.

We always have many animals that are desperately in need of loving homes. The photos above are just a few of the cats we have for adoption. All of our cats have been checked for good health and are neutered and vaccinated. If you are interested in offering a home to any of our animals please contact us on our General Helpline on 020 8644 8829.

Another important part of Croydon Animal Samaritans is the fundraising side of the charity. As well as an Open Day every summer we also have a fund raising shop in Croydon run by volunteers. If you would like to help with any of our fundraising events by participating or donating goods again please contact our General Helpline on 020 8644 8829.

We are constantly looking for new fosterers, not just those who can have a cabin in their garden, but also those who can give a spare room to a cat, or kittens and look after them while a new home is found. If you feel this would be of interest to you please call Lois on (020) 8647 7815 or Anna on (020) 8698 6813 or visit our website www.croydonanimalsamaritans.co.uk VVoice

Beverley Safer Neighbourhood Team CI Tower, St George’s Square, New Malden 020 8721 2750 [email protected] In an emergency always dial 999.

Welcome to the monthly article from your local Safer Neighbourhood Police Team. I am writing this article to introduce myself as the new Sergeant covering the Beverley Safer Neighbourhood Ward. I am standing in for Sergeant Nick Ellis who is on secondment with the Prince’s Trust until the end of April 2011. I have come from a response team that covers the whole of Kingston, but I am looking forward to getting involved with what is clearly a very nice neighbourhood and community.

In this months article, I wanted to begin by informing you of an exciting new initiative that the team launched at the start of this year. This is the Korean Community Engagement Project and the launch event was held at the New Malden Methodist Church on the High Street. This project has been developed to help increase the contact between Police and the Korean Community. Within New Malden there is currently the largest Korean Community outside Korea. The intention is to help build bridges between the Safer Neighbourhood Team & members of the Korean Community. The initial stage of the project is a multi-agency drop-in session which began on Monday 10th January 2010, running between 14:30hrs and 16:30hrs. As well as the neighbourhood police team, several other agencies were present. The London Fire Brigade were

there to offer advice on smoke alarms and fire safety. Jo Keogh from the Crisis Intervention Team at Kingston was there to provide information regarding legal options, support with relocation and also work with victims to achieve solutions to their problems. Finally to assist in reporting any

issues or crimes, several members of the Korean community who volunteer to run the front office of the police station at the CI Tower, New Malden were present to assist. The aim of this project is to provide a convenient way for members of the Korean Community to report crimes or discuss concerns without there being a language barrier which can lead to reluctance to report such issues. There will be a drop-in every four weeks on a Monday. The next date is 7th February 2011 at 14:30hrs.

If you have any questions about what I have discussed or wish to raise any issues with me please do get in touch on the contact details below. VVoice

Annie Beesley, local New Malden resident and YMCA qualified fitness instructor at Corpus Christi RC Primary School, brings a wealth of experience and motivation to her Monday evening aerobics in the school hall.

Annie enjoys an extensive career in health and fitness and the passion that she first had when she started at the YMCA is still with her in each and every class she designs and delivers. Her 7pm aerobics participants comment: ‘Annie has revitalised aerobics by working every part of our bodies, making sure we get the most from each session, yet never pushing us over our natural limits. That said, we do maximise our heart rate and go at a healthy, challenging pace that is stimulating and fun. We feel it’s all down to Annie’s ongoing enthusiasm for what she does and her passion to make people feel good, and work out

in a safe and correct manner.’

I went to Annie’s class not only as part of my 2011 resolution to get fitter and tone up, but to make sure I was getting a full body workout. Previously, in the gym, I found myself getting stale, going through the same exercises. I wanted new moves, different intensity

and the fun element of exercising to music. I used to do aerobic classes, then the gym took over and I have to say, I’m glad to be back in the aerobic zone. Annie’s class ticks all the boxes and I look forward to her workouts, they start the week on a feelgood note. It’s not just the physical benefits, but mentally I feel sharper, get to hear different music and know that the instruction is spot on, motivational and safe.

Health and fitness is an excellent way to re-energise career and personal wellbeing – and – makes me realise how much it needs to play an integral role in all our lives, comments Joanna (a regular Mon eve participant).

Annie’s classes follow a natural build up, starting with mobility and pulse-raising exercises, followed by prepatory stretches, before re-warming and then upping the intensity to a full aerobic curve that takes the heart beat higher and then cools down with some relaxing, developmental stretches and finally some deep breathing to bring us back to earth. Annie says ‘it’s important to include ‘build in the class’ so that muscles get warm, blood is circulated appropriately and that the content is varied – and that options are always offered so that participants work at the pace that suits them’.

It’s no surprise that Annie has regular class participants and always welcomes newcomers warmly so they fit in and feel part of the session. The New Year is a time to encourage new people to come along and try working out at a pace that suits the individual, have fun, meet new people. The outcomes? Kick start the New Year with a feelgood factor for a healthy body and clear-sighted mind for balance and wellbeing at home and work!

Enjoy Working Out in A Friendly Atmosphere & Feel Good ... A New Year ... A New You! VVoice

This recipe for Sicilian polpette – Italian meatballs - dates back to the times of post-war austerity when my grandmother and great grandmother lived in the hills of Sicily. With little money they made use of foodstuffs that were readily available: the pecorino cheese from the sheep grazing on the mountain, locally reared meats, the fresh mint growing wild on the land and chunks of leftover bread. Polpette are really versatile. They work equally well served on salad, with garlic bread or in a mouth-watering tomato and fresh basil sauce pasta dish. I usually make up a large batch (double the quantities below) and store what I don’t use in fridge for up to three days or in the freezer to use at a later date. Here’s how to make the polpette: This recipe makes around 20 polpette – a satisfying lunch for 4-5 people.

Polpette ingredients• 500g of combined fresh minced beef and pork

• 1 large egg• 1 cup of freshly grated Peccorino Romano or Parmeggiano Reggiano cheese• 1 cup of home-made bread crumbs soaked in a little milk• 1 clove garlic – finely chopped• A bunch of fresh mint – chopped • A large pinch of salt and freshly ground pepper• A small pinch of crushed chillis (optional)• Olive oil for frying Preparation• Place the minced meat, bread crumbs, cheese, mint and egg into a large bowl. •Add a large pinch of salt and pepper. For polpette with a little more kick, also add a small pinch of crushed chillies.

•Lastly add the garlic making sure it is evenly distributed through the mixture. • Mix up the ingredients well with your hands for a minute or so.• Now roll the mixture into balls of roughly 1.5-2 inches in diameter. You should end up with around 20 polpette. • Heat up a pan with the oil and add the polpette once the oil is hot. Fry in small batches on a medium heat leaving space around each one. This makes the polpette easier to turn

and keeps the oil nice and hot. • Fry each batch for 10-12 minutes until golden brown and thoroughly cooked inside. Cut one open to make sure there is no pink meat. • Let the polpette drain on kitchen towel for a few moments to soak away any excess oil. To serve as a saladDrizzle a salad of mixed leaves and sliced red onion with an olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing. Arrange 4-5 polpette per person on top of the salad and serve with crusty rustic bread. To serve as part of a pasta sauceAdd 3-4 cooked polpette per person to a freshly made tomato and basil sauce. Heat through, and serve with spaghetti or penne topped with Parmeggiano Reggiano or Pecorino Romano Cheese. The Ladies of the New Malden W.I. moved to new premises in January. We now meet at the Shiraz Mirza Manor Park Hall in Manor Park, Malden Road, New Malden, where we hope to increase our present 50 plus members and attract new people to come and join us.

WHY DON’T YOU JOIN US AND SEE FOR YOURSELF? The WI offers opportunities for all women to enjoy friendship to learn, to widen their horizons and together to influence national and international affairs.

The Women’s Institute movement is based on the spiritual ideals of fellowship, truth, tolerance and justice. At our meetings there is a buzz when you go into the room. Every member will be busy and involved and there are lots of activities going on in addition to the monthly meetings.

At the New Malden WI, we have lots of clubs that might interest you, ranging from bridge playing, interesting walks, lunch clubs, and even golf. There is also a monthly Book Club where members come together

and discuss novels of their choice, and last months book was discussed in the local pub over some delicious bar snacks!

We also enjoy some fabulous days out to places such as, Kew Gardens, and a trip to Brighton to see the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ Show, which everyone really enjoyed.

On our Jam Making Day, the group made over 100 jars of jams, curds and some delicious chutneys, which could make fabulous gifts for your friends and family at Christmastime and birthdays. We’ve also put on various craft days where members share their skills in jewelry making, patchwork quilting, cookery and even crotchet.

So if you think you’d like to come and have some fun why not join us in the New Year and make 2011 YOUR year to make NEW FRIENDS and learn NEW SKILLS.

We look forward to welcoming you at the MANOR PARK HALL IN NEW MALDEN on the SECOND THURSDAY of every month at 7.30 pm. VVoice

So whether you are a pupil, young adult, a mum or dad, own or work for a business or public authority, belong to an environmental or other club with civic pride or just a Rotarian, why not join in the fun and help Rotary End Polio Now by supporting our Focus on the Crocus initiative? As we look to celebrate Rotary Day on 23rd February, Focus on the Crocus is a healthy, fun, community based, environmental friendly way to plant in everyone's mind, the opportunity of being part of a historic worldwide campaign, spearheaded by Rotary International, to finally eradicate Polio across the world ... and an excuse to have a party afterwards, get a certificate of participation and generally enjoy the life we are giving others. The Rotary Club of New Malden has planted, with the generous help of The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, thousands of crocus bulbs at NEW MALDEN FOUNTAIN ROUNDABOUT. WATCH OUT FOR THE BLAZE OF PURPLE NEXT MONTH. The Ruby Giant ‘purple' crocus represents the dye colour dabbed on children's little ‘pinkie' finger to indicate they have been immunised against polio in the few remaining parts of the globe since Rotary International commenced its campaign in 1985.

You are taking them WHERE? by Ian Duncan

dads diary

"Grown-ups never understand anything for themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them" - The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

You are taking them where? Her godmother was aghast, "You are taking my goddaughter (Age seven and three quarters) to see JLS at the O2. Are you sure?" Well, we had been up to that point. She didn't appear to have any objections to our daughter's taste in music so what was it that made her question our parenting skills, the journey, the crowds, the late night? However confident we were that she could handle it now there was this pressure – we all want to be seen as a good parent. Perhaps we shouldn't have admitted to what thousand of others were doing that Saturday night.

Guilty? Not Guilty or Un-proven?So, what else are parents guiltily hiding from the friends, family and other parents for fear of being cast out of polite society? Leaving them at home will they pop to the to the newsagents for a paper and a pint of milk or for a latte in Il Chicco's? Letting them wear make up? Allowing them walk to school or the corner shop on their own. Agreeing to them have a Facebook account? Giving them a mobile phone? Any of these might be okay if your child was sixteen but what about eleven or six?

Home AloneDespite the fact that many people believe the magical age children can be left alone is fourteen, there is no minimum age when you're legally allowed to leave them. However, it is an offence if it puts them at risk. Parents can be prosecuted if they leave a child unsupervised ‘in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury to health’ (Children and Young Person’s Act). 'The law is unclear,' says the NSPCC, "'If a child is happy to be left alone for short periods of time, that could be acceptable. It's important that the parent and child talk about leaving him or her alone. A child can seem mature with a lot of bravado, but may actually feel very insecure about being left alone.' The NSPPC suggests a number of things to consider before you decide to leave a child alone. These include:

the age of the child, the child's level of maturity and

understanding, the place where the child will be left, how long, and how often, the child will be left alone and whether or not there are any other children with the child.

Walking to SchoolI'm sure many of us have pondered the question of when to let our little ones travel to and from school on their own. In September 2010, Lincolnshire County Council threatened a father with “child protection issues” for allowing his seven-year-old daughter to walk twenty metres from their home to the school bus stop unaccompanied. Was he being irresponsible? Did he not fear for her safety? What about all the terrible people out there waiting to abduct her? Or was it far from this being bad parenting, was he not allowing her freedom and teaching her about safety and responsibility surely a crucial part of bringing children up? Daughter number one nagged and nagged to be allowed to walk to school alone (probably because she thought she might be allowed a mobile phone "just in case"). Having done it once, in the last year of primary school, she

was quite happy then to be accompanied - could it be that children have an innate need to test themselves, to experience danger and overcome it and make small judgments about their own safety? Or perhaps an even bigger need to think that their parents trust them to do so?
