Aims: to expand students vocabulary related to landscape and environmentalproblems
to familiarise students with various types of environmental issues
to encourage students to express their opinions on recycling
Objectives:
By the end of the lesson the students:

in a correct way

Previous knowledge:
Students have already read for specific information a text about renewablesources of energy.
Anticipated problems:
Students may have difficulties in expressing their ideas on environmentalproblems, as well as in finding solutions to those problems.

Lesson Stages:
Activity 1: Warm UpAims: to set the students in the right mood for starting the lesson
Skill focus: speakingTiming: 5 min.
Procedure:
T greets the Ss and marks the absents.T asks the Ss to read their homework. (ex. 8/ p. 54)
Activity 2: Introducing the new topicAims: to create interest in the new topic
Skill focus: speaking
Timing: 10 min.Procedure:T shows Ss some pictures of environmental problems that can be encounteredaround us nowadays. T asks Ss to say what the pictures represent. Ss give their
answers and T provides further explanation.T announces the title of the lesson and writes it on the blackboard: Environmental
Problems.
Activity 3: Listening Activity
Aims: to listen to a dialogue on environmental problemsto learn new items of vocabulary related to nature
Skill focus: readingTiming: 10 min.
Procedure: T asks Ss to listen to a conversation between Sandra, Bill and Janet,
three people living on an island where there are all sorts of environmentalproblems. Ss read the problems listed in ex. 31/ p.60 and then listen in order to
match them to the speakers. Ss listen to the dialogue twice. Then they check the
answers. T elicits environmental problems and puts them on the blackboard in a
list.
Activity 4: Reading ActivityAims: to encourage students to analyse texts
Skill focus: reading, speakingTiming: 10 minutes

Procedure: T explains Ss that they have to insert some specific sentences to the
text they belong (hand-out Reading). Ss work individually; then T elicits feedback.T asks Ss to identify environmental problems and solutions and add them to the
lists on the blackboard. Ss give their answers also expressing the reasons for their
choice.
Activity 5: Speaking ActivityAims: to encourage Ss to express their opinions
to enable students to use various phrases in order to give solutions for
recyclingSkill focus: speakingTiming: 10 minutesProcedure: T tells students that they need to decide upon recycling methods as
suggested in ex. 36/ p. 61 in their books.T elicits useful language to make suggestions: A good idea would be,/ Weshould/ could, Perhaps we should/ It would be a good idea to etc.
As an extra activity Ss are given a hand-out with exercises related to environmental
problems.
Activity 6: Homework Assignment (ex. 34/ p. 60)
