CONDENSED MATTER PHYSICS

PRINCIPLES OF SOLAR CELLSConnecting Perspectives on Device, System, Reliability, and Data Science

by Muhammad A Alam (Purdue University, USA) & M Ryyan Khan (Purdue University, USA)

Written in a conversational style and with over one-hundred homework problems, this book offers an end-to-end perspective, connecting the multi-disciplinary and multi-scale physical phenomena of electron-photon interaction at the molecular level to the design of kilometers-long solar farms. A new conceptual framework explains each concept in a simple, crystal-clear form. The novel use of thermodynamics not only determines the ultimate conversion efficiencies of the various solar cells proposed over the years, but also identifies the measurement artifacts and establishes practical limits by correlating the degradation modes. Extensive coverage of conceptual techniques already developed in other fields further inspire innovative designs of solar farms.

GENERAL PHYSICS (ALL ASPECTS)

Textbook

MODERN PHYSICSThe Scenic Route

by Leo Bellantoni (Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, USA)

This book leapfrogs over the usual pedagogical progression, taking readers to a real understanding of quantum, relativistic, nuclear and particle physics. These areas are usually reserved for the end of one’s undergraduate career or even for graduate students in physics programs, but do not need to be. The Scenic Route is really created out of the joy of science; it is not designed to produce problem-solving ability but rather is designed to reveal some physics that is just plain nifty. Guided by an understanding that much of modern physics is available to almost everyone with a moderate mathematical vocabulary, we lead the student through a short, trenchant tour of quantum physics, relativity, modern particle physics and its history.

EVERYDAY PHYSICSColors, Light and Optical Illusions

by Michel A Van Hove (Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong)

This book aims to popularize physics by emphasizing conceptual ideas of physics and their interconnections, while avoiding mathematics entirely. The approach is to explore intriguing topics by asking and discussing questions, thereby the reader can participate in developing answers, which enables a deeper understanding than is achievable with memorization.

The topic of this volume, “Colors, light and Optical Illusions”, is chosen because we face colors and light every waking minute of our lives, and we experience optical illusions much more often than we realize.

MODULAR AND AUTOMORPHIC FORMS & BEYONDby Hossein Movasati (IMPA, Brazil)

The guiding principle in this monograph is to develop a new theory of modular forms which encompasses most of the available theory of modular forms in the literature, such as those for congruence groups, Siegel and Hilbert modular forms, many types of automorphic forms on Hermitian symmetric domains, Calabi – Yau modular forms, with its examples such as Yukawa couplings and topological string partition functions, and even go beyond all these cases. Its main ingredient is the so-called “Gauss – Manin connection in disguise”.

GEOMETRY AND TOPOLOGY

LECTURES ON ALGEBRAIC TOPOLOGYby Haynes Miller (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA)

Algebraic Topology and basic homotopy theory form a fundamental building block for much of modern mathematics. These lecture notes represent a culmination of many years of leading a two-semester course in this subject at MIT. The style is engaging and student-friendly, but precise. Every lecture is accompanied by exercises. It begins slowly in order to gather up students with a variety of backgrounds, but gains pace as the course progresses, and by the end the student has a command of all the basic techniques of classical homotopy theory.

MATHEMATICAL PHYSICS

A MATHEMATICAL INTRODUCTION TO GENERAL RELATIVITY

by Amol Sasane (London School of Economics, UK)

The book aims to give a mathematical presentation of the theory of general relativity (that is, spacetime-geometry-based gravitation theory) to advanced undergraduate mathematics students. Mathematicians will find spacetime physics presented in the definition-theorem-proof format familiar to them. The given precise mathematical definitions of physical notions help avoiding pitfalls, especially in the context of spacetime physics describing phenomena that are counter-intuitive to everyday experiences.

SCIENCE, MUSIC, AND MATHEMATICSThe Deepest Connections

by Michael Edgeworth McIntyre (University of Cambridge, UK)

Professor Michael Edgeworth McIntyre is an eminent scientist who has also had a part-time career as a musician. From a lifetime’s thinking, he offers this extraordinary synthesis exposing the deepest connections between science, music, and mathematics, while avoiding equations and technical jargon. He begins with perception psychology and the dichotomization instinct and then takes us through biological evolution, human language, and acausality illusions all the way to the climate crisis and the weaponization of the social media, and beyond that into the deepest parts of theoretical physics — demonstrating our unconscious mathematical abilities.

CLASSICAL AND MODERN OPTIMIZATIONby Guillaume Carlier (Université Paris Dauphine, France)

Classical and Modern Optimization presents a self-contained overview of classical and modern ideas and methods in approaching optimization problems. The approach is rich and flexible enough to address smooth and non-smooth, convex and non-convex, finite or infinite-dimensional, static or dynamic situations. The first chapters of the book are devoted to the classical toolbox: topology and functional analysis, differential calculus, convex analysis and necessary conditions for differentiable constrained optimization. The remaining chapters are dedicated to more specialized topics and applications.

DYNAMICS OF THE KOREAN STATEFrom the Paleolithic Age to Candlelight Democracy

by Robert E Bedeski (University of Victoria, Canada & University of Washington, USA)

One Korea or two?

The persistence of North and South Korea since 1948 has been a source of one war and fears of new wars. Although they share centuries of common culture, society and politics, the two nations differ on fundamentals today: capitalist democracy in the south and totalitarian communism in the north. Dynamics of the Korean State provides a unique overview of how humans treasure their individual lives and how these dynamics intertwine with Korean history and state evolution.

INTRODUCTION TO HIGH ENERGY PHYSICSParticle Physics for the Beginnerby Lee G Pondrom (University of Wisconsin – Madison, USA)

Elementary particle physics is a mature subject, with a wide variety of topics. Size considerations require any text to make choices in the subject matter, and such choices are to a large extent a matter of taste. Each topic in this text has been selected for its accessibility to as wide an audience of interested readers as possible, without any compromise in mathematical sophistication. There are of necessity a lot of formulas, but every one is derived, and an effort has been made to explain the various steps and clever tricks, and how to avoid pitfalls. The text is supplemented by exercises at the end of each chapter. The reader is urged to do the exercises that are designed to increase one’s skills in the material. The goal of the book is to bring to undergraduates an ability to enjoy this interesting subject.

STATISTICAL PHYSICS, COMPLEXITY AND NONLINEAR

DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS

TextbookADVANCED STATISTICAL MECHANICSby Jian-Sheng Wang (National University of Singapore, Singapore)

This short textbook covers roughly 13 weeks of lectures on advanced statistical mechanics at the graduate level. It starts with an elementary introduction to the theory of ensembles from classical mechanics, and then goes on to quantum statistical mechanics with density matrix. These topics are covered concisely and briefly. The advanced topics cover the mean-field theory for phase transitions, the Ising models and their exact solutions, and critical phenomena and their scaling theory. The mean-field theories are discussed thoroughly with several different perspectives — focusing on a single degree, or using Feynman – Jensen – Bogoliubov inequality, cavity method, or Landau theory. The renormalization group theory is mentioned only briefly. As examples of computational and numerical approach, there is a chapter on Monte Carlo method including the cluster algorithms. The second half of the book studies nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, which includes the Brownian motion, the Langevin and Fokker – Planck equations, Boltzmann equation, linear response theory, and the Jarzynski equality. The book ends with a brief discussion of irreversibility. The topics are supplemented by problem sets (with partial answers) and supplementary readings up to the current research, such as heat transport with a Fokker – Planck approach.

Featured Contents: Thermodynamics; Foundation of Statistical Mechanics, Statistical Ensembles; Quantum Statistical Mechanics; Phase Transitions, van der Waals Equation; and others.

Readership: Advanced undergraduate, graduate students and researchers.

This book is the first to provide a compre-hensive and elementary account of the new Iwa-sawa theory innovated via the deformation theory of modular forms and Galois representa-tions. The deformation theory of modular forms is developed by generalizing the cohomo-logical approach discovered in the author’s 2019 AMS Leroy P Steele Prize-winning article without using much algebraic geometry.

Starting with a description of Iwasawa’s classical results on his proof of the main conjecture under the Kummer – Vandiver conjecture (which proves cyclicity of his Iwasawa module more than just proving his main conjecture), we describe a generalization of the method proving cyclicity to the adjoint Selmer group of every ordinary deformation of a two-dimensional Artin Galois representation.

Contents: Cyclotomic Iwasawa Theory; Cuspidal Iwasawa Theory; Cohomological Modular Forms and p-Adic L-Functions; p-Adic Families of Modular Forms; Abelian Deformation; Universal Ring and Compatible System; Cyclicity of Adjoint Selmer Groups; Local Indecomposability of Modular Galois Representation; Analytic and Topological Methods.

Readership: Advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and practitioners in the fields of algebraic/analytic number theory and arithmetic geometry.

Contents: Introduction; Preliminaries in Algebraic Geometry; Enhanced Schemes; Topology and Periods; Foliations on Schemes; Modular Foliations; Hodge Cycles and Loci; Generalized Period Domain; Elliptic Curves; Product of Two Elliptic Curves; Abelian Varieties; Hypersurfaces; Calabi – Yau Varieties; Transcendence Questions: Introduction; A Biased Overview of Transcendence Theory; The Theorem of Nesterenko; Periods; ReferenceIndex.

MATHEMATICAL FEYNMAN PATH INTEGRALS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS (2nd Edition)by Sonia Mazzucchi (University of Trento, Italy)

Feynman path inte-grals are ubiquitous in quantum physics, even if a large part of the scientific community still considers them as a heuristic tool that lacks a sound mathematical definition. Our book aims to refute this preju-dice, providing an extensive and self-con-tained description of the mathematical theory of Feynman path integration, from the earlier attempts to the latest developments, as well as its applications to quantum mechanics.

This second edition presents a detailed discussion of the general theory of complex integration on infinite dimensional spaces, providing on one hand a unified view of the various existing approaches to the mathematical construction of Feynman path integrals and on the other hand a connection with the classical theory of stochastic processes.

This book bridges between the realms of stochastic analysis and the theory of Feynman path integration. It is accessible to both mathematicians and physicists.

Featured Contents: A Unified View of Infinite Dimensional Integration; Infinite Dimensional Oscillatory Integrals; Feynman Path Integrals and the Schroedinger Equation; The Stationary Phase Method and the Semiclassical Limit of Quantum Mechanics; and others.

Readership: Researchers, graduate students, mathematical physicists, physicists and mathematicians.

SCIENCE, MUSIC, AND MATHEMATICSThe Deepest Connectionsby Michael Edgeworth McIntyre (University of Cambridge, UK)

Professor Michael Edge-worth McIntyre is an em-inent scientist who has also had a part-time ca-reer as a musician. From a lifetime’s thinking, he offers this extraordinary synthesis exposing the deepest connections between science, music, and mathematics, while avoiding equations and technical jargon. He begins with perception psychology and the dichotomization instinct and then takes us through biological evolution, human lan-guage, and acausality illusions all the way to the climate crisis and the weaponization of the social media, and beyond that into the deepest parts of theoretical physics — dem-onstrating our unconscious mathematical abilities.

He also has an important message of hope for the future. Contrary to popular belief, biological evolution has given us not only the nastiest, but also the most compassionate and cooperative parts of human nature. This insight comes from recognizing that biological evolution is more than a simple competition between selfish genes. Rather, he suggests, in some ways it is more like turbulent fluid flow, a complex process spanning a vast range of timescales.

TOBACCO AND CANCERThe Science and the Storyedited by Stephen S Hecht & Dorothy K Hatsukami (University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, USA)

This book tel ls the fascinating story of the relationship of tobacco products to cancer, from the first discoveries to the present day cancer pandemic and regulatory activities. Although there are already excellent books and monographs on this topic, both in the popular press and as government summaries, none relate the scientific story at the level of non-specialist graduate and medical students, researchers, or educated popular science readers. In this book, with a primary focus on the United States, the editors — Stephen S Hecht and Dorothy K Hatsukami — bring together 24 renowned experts on the subject of tobacco and cancer to summarize specific aspects of this critical topic in relatively non-technical terms while also incorporating some personal insights related to the story of the discovery process.

Featured Contents: History of the Evolution of Tobacco Products (K Michael Cummings, Anthony Brown, and Baron Philipson); Smoking and Cancer: The Early Years (Jonathan M Samet); Animal Studies of Tobacco and Cancer (Karam El-Bayoumy); Carcinogens and Toxicants in Combusted Tobacco Products and Related Cancer Risks (Irina Stepanov); Smokeless Tobacco and Cancer (S Jane Henley, Taylor Ellington, Stephen Stanfill, Kathi Mills, Michael J Thun); Alternative Nicotine Delivery Systems (Maciej L Goniewicz); and others.

ANDROCENTRISMThe Ascendancy of Manby Charles Pasternak (Oxford International Biomedical Centre, UK)

Since time immemorial, men have assumed su-perior innate qualities which have justified them in exerting power over the other sex right up to the twentieth century. The last few years have seen the emergence of a new literary genre: to show that despite this, women have managed to become outstanding writers, artists, scien-tists, explorers, rulers and politicians. Of such books, none discusses a fundamental question: is the supposed male superiority biological, or has it arisen for some other reason over the course of time? This is the issue that Androcentrism: The Ascendancy of Man addresses.

World Scientific Series on Environmental, Energy and Climate Economics

CLIMATE AND DEVELOPMENTedited by Anil Markandya (Basque Centre For Climate Change, Spain) & Dirk T G Rübbelke (Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany)

The 2015 Paris Accord stated the aim to limit the increase in global mean temperatures to 2ºC by the end of this century and if possible, keep it down to 1.5ºC. Achieving this is possible, but the costs incurred are uncertain and the distribution of costs among nations is indistinct. Furthermore, even if the goal is realised, significant impacts from climate change can be expected. Evidence indicates that these will be felt most severely in countries that are relatively poor. These effects of climate change will be added to by the measures taken to reduce GHGs. Together, they will determine how climate change affects the prospects for development across the globe. The analysis of the interplay between climate change and policies to combat it on the one hand and development on the other are the focus of this book.

TextbookPRODUCTION ECONOMICSAn Empirical Approachby Charles B Moss (University of Florida, USA)

Production economics is that branch of microeco-nomics that examines producer decisions. This book focuses on the empirical estimation of these relationships us-ing primal, dual, and dif-ferential specifications. The primal specification models production decisions based on the production function — estimation of the input/output relationship and the derivation of optimization behavior from this technical relationship. The dual approach estimates production decisions using economic in-formation such as input and output prices. The textbook then develops the linkages between these relationships. The differential problem is an alternative approach derived from changes in the first-order conditions from cost minimizing behavior. In each case, the theoretical development is followed by different empirical specifications that can be used to estimate the producer’s choice.

Contents: Basic Notions of Production Functions; Estimation of the Primal; Empirical Examples of the Primal; Cost and Profit Functions; Estimating Dual Relationships; Technical Change and Efficiency; Differential Models of Product ion; Topics and Applications; Conclusions and Suggestions for Further Research.

World Scientific Series on Financial Data Analytics - Vol 1

RISK ANALYTICSFrom Concept to Deploymentby Edward H K Ng (Singapore Management University, Singapore)

Modeling was done using software with output codes not readily processed by databases. Data have to be manually extracted and run on the models with results input into the databases manually again. With the increasing acceptance of open source languages, database vendors have seen the value of integrating modeling capabilities into their products. That has made it possible to insert models developed using R, Python or other languages directly into SQL scripts used for database transactions. As R or Python are free, there is no additional cost involved. Nevertheless, deploying solutions developed to automate the process remains a challenge. While not comprehensive in dealing with all facets of risks, the author with his wealth of consulting experience, aims to contribute to the development of risk professionals who will be able to progress beyond theories and concepts to create solutions that can support planning and automated decision-making.

Contents: Introduction; Risk Typology and Data Implications; Risk Analytics Landscape; Embedded R; Data Audit; Data Warehousing; Analytical Data Sphere; Risks in Financial Inst i tut ions ; Common Risk Models and Analytics; Internal Rating System; Deployment; Through the Cycle (TTC) Updating; Desktop Analytics; Resources.

THE INTERNATIONAL LAW OF THE SEA IN THE 21ST CENTURYState Practice in East Asiaby Keyuan Zou (Dalian Maritime University, China & University of Central Lancashire, UK)

The international law of the sea is the oldest branch in traditional international law but also a fast developing branch in contemporary international law. After the entry into force of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1994, there have b e e n c o n s i d e r a b l e developments in the field of the law of the sea. Some provisions of the Convention proved to be inadequate, ambiguous or difficult for an effective implementation. This book attempts to reflect the latest developments in the law of the sea, including maritime dispute settlement, maritime boundary delimitation, non-traditional maritime security issues, and the impact of maritime powers such as the United States on the development of the law of the sea. While the book takes a holistic approach, it has made a special reference to East Asia, the most vibrant region in economic development and the most volatile place in maritime disputes in today’s world.

Featured Contents: The Law of the Sea in the 21st Century and Onwards: Implementing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in East Asia; The US Accession to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and Its Impact on East Asia; Tackling Non-Traditional Maritime Security Issues: Maritime Enforcement of United Nations Security Council Resolutions; International Efforts of Crackdown on Piracy; Challenges and Issues in East Asia: Maritime Boundary Delimitation Agreement for the Gulf of Tonkin; and others.

Readership: Academics, policymakers, professionals, undergraduate and graduate students.

MARITIME STUDIES

SOUTH CHINA SEA DEVELOPMENTSAND IMPLICATIONS FOR FREEDOM OF NAVIGATIONby Arabinda Acharya (National Defense University, USA & Rabdan Academy, UAE)& Antara Desai (Centre for Peace and Development Studies, India)

With military facilities including airstrips and artificial islands or struc-tures being built in the area, concerns about freedom of navigation and the right to inno-cent passage have also become an overwhelm-ing security issue and made the SCS region a flashpoint which, according to many assess-ments, can lead to confrontations including those involving conventional military means. Disruption of maritime passage could also hamper trade and commerce with very nega-tive impacts on the economic development of the region and other countries. It is now being held that China could also be using the SCS disputes as part of a consorted effort to deflect geo-political pressures on account of the COVID-19 pandemic-related cover-ups and misinformation.

This book explores the historical and strategic context of the South China Sea disputes and makes an assessment of the implications of the same for freedom of navigation and other regimes at sea.

Contents: Introduction; China and the Thucydides’ Trap; South China Sea: Setting the Stage of the Conflict; China, the US, and the World; South China Sea and the Maritime Law; Politics of Artificial Islands; Military Buildup in the South China Sea & Implications; Exercises and Other Military Developments in the South China Sea; Attempts to Resolve the Conflicts; Conclusion.

Readership: Scholars and professionals in the maritime domain; International Relations scholars; students and professors.

[ ASIAN STUDIES ]

DYNAMICS OF THE KOREAN STATEFrom the Paleolithic Age to Candlelight Democracyby Robert E Bedeski (University of Victoria, Canada & University of Washington, USA)

The book examines the development of the Korean state from ancient times and sees its roots in the Stone Age struggle for survival. The persistent theme has been to Prolong Life — Postpone Death. Hence, the origins of every state can be found in man’s Will-to-Live, and this is demonstrated in the Will/state action framework offered by the author. Human Will, not material determinism or divine plan, creates the state. This primary Will generates five other Wills, which motivate actions to culminate in the state and give it a fluidity over time. The six Wills/state actions are as follows: Will-to-Live/production; Will-to-Freedom/innovation; Will-to-Power/organization; Will-to-Comply/enforcement; Will-to-Transcend/political vision & religion; and Will-to-Redirect/reform, usurpation, rebellion, revolution. These in combination influence and partially determine state configuration and fluidity, creating order, disorder, war, prosperity, and poverty along the way.

Featured Contents: The Korean State and its Paradigms: State, Candlelight Democracy, and Populist Constitutionalism; The State as Concept and Supplement to Human Existence; Ascent of the East Asian Nation-State; Organic Life, Human Will, and Evolution of the State; Producers, Will-to-Live, and the State’s Material Foundation; and others.

Readership: Scholars and students of Asian affairs as well as political science teachers and researchers.

Series on China’s Belt and Road Initiative

THE BELT AND ROAD INITIATIVEImplications for the International Orderby Moritz Rudolf (German Institute forInternational and Security Affairs (SWP), Germany)

This book showcases how the People’s Repub-lic of China (PRC) has been utilizing the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to reshape the global order. Dissecting China’s increasingly assertive international behaviour, the book demonstrates how the PRC projects its self-perception onto the international order.
