Addresses to the Panel Discussion

By Rector of Trisakti University, Professor DR. Thoby Mutis

Standardization is no longer merely an instrument for rationalization, but is applied now by companies and states as a strategic and powerful instrument in competing for markets. It helps not only organizations maximize profits and meet their goals, and is crucial for success in today’s challenging and competitive economic environment but also becomes the central key to response to the issue of sustainability, viewed from an economic, environmental and socio-cultural perspective. To excel in standardization, proper education is needed. Thus, education in the field of standardization is a part of engine for sustainable development.

By Ambassador of Switzerland to the Republic of Indonesia,H.E. Mr. Heinz Walker-Nederkoorn

Swiss experience shows that there are plenty of possibilities to increase efficiency on the way to a green economy: By introducing sustainable production processes, by reducing waste, by recycling materials or by introducing energy-saving technologies, to name but a few. In this context, standards

make quality and efficiency criteria transparent and create a level playing field for business.

Standards are also important as tools to safeguard public security, life and health of humans, animals and plants, environment, safety at the workplace and consumer protection. Against the background of our highly interconnected global economy, it is of crucial importance to harmonize standards and to avoid unnecessary obstacles to trade, whilst safeguarding legitimate policy objectives.

I would like to congratulate the Institute for Standardization Trisakti University for organizing this Panel and look forward to fruitful deliberations with you.

By ISO Secretary General

There were at least two important reasons why ISTU was established. First, the demand for standards expertise will be growing in the near future due to the continuity of socio-economic and technological integration and dependency on the availability of adequate standards as well as the competency to develop the standards. Secondly, the growing trends on job requirements for everyone dealing with standardization issues- from technical expert to the policy maker relying on standardization as regulatory instrument is the reality one cannot escape from.

ISTU as an academia organization within Trisakti University plays its role in cooperation with standards organization and community at both national and international levels in focusing on standardization education, providing consultancy and standards training as well. ISTU constitutes a centre for standardization expertise that focuses on specific standards or, for instance, standards for management systems such as ISO 9001 on quality management and ISO 14001 on environmental management. Professional training and consultancy in the field of standardization and academic education in the field of standardization are the core business of this institute.

By Trisakti University students

Entering the age of globalization, we are fully aware of the importance of standardization as the key to interact with the global society demanding standards to guarantee quality of health, safety and comfort for human beings as well as harmony with the natural environment. So we think of standardization as the base of our concept of development to implement as strategies towards sustainability. To go to college or university without awareness in standardization seems to present a waste to our future.

We really appreciate the ISTU management for providing us the young people with not only awareness in standardization and role as the prominent stakeholder but also opening wide opportunities to do best practices in standardization. One of these is our work activating this panel discussion. Viva ISTU!!
