Israel Hofshit (Be Free Israel) A nationwide grassroots movement, with a large and successful social media footprint and a presence on most major university campuses, building popular support and action on freedom of religion, civil marriage, and a separation between religion and state

Since 1979, the New Israel Fund has distributed more than $400 million to Israeli civil society organisations, supporting social change programs to ensure Israel upholds the values of the Declaration of Independence. Here are seven of NIF’s focus areas, as well as examples of 11 organisations NIF supports. Together, these form just a portion of the work NIF is doing to promote social justice, human rights and religious pluralism in Israel. See more at www.nif.org.au/israel

Our Work in Israel

“Zazim” (We’re Moving) A new, multi-issue online organising platform, built on the same principles as GetUp. A dual Hebrew and Arabic website, “Zazim” will create its own campaings, as well as promoting initiatives created by its grassroots movement, tapping in to Israelis’ thirst for social change

“Tag Meir” Coalition (Light Tag) A grassroots initiative that includes more than 40 Jewish organisations working to “spread the light” with a message of non-violence, tolerance and anti-racism. The organisation transcends religious divides, enlisting support from across the Israeli spectrum to organise condolence visits and public education

The Association for Civil Rights in Israel

(ACRI) Israel’s oldest and largest human rights organisation that deals with the entire spectrum of rights and civil liberties issues in Israel and the West Bank. ACRI focuses on using strategic litigation to correct injustices, as well as public advocacy and community education

Shatil - NIF’s Initiative for Social Change Has been building civil society and actively promoting democracy, tolerance, and social justice in Israel for 30 years. Creates change by upskilling and training activists and organisations, facilitating networks and coalitions, and building grassroots groups into large social movements in Israel

Coalition Against Racism Facilitated by NIF and Shatil, the Coalition includes 43 organisations representing minority groups that are subject to institutional and civilian racism and discrimination. They educate about the effects of racism and facilitate cross community interaction

B’Tselem

One of Israel’s oldest and largest human rights organisations, B’Tselem: The Israeli

Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories, documents and

educates the Israeli public and policymakers about human rights violations in the West

Bank, and supports a human rights culture in Israel

Council for Peace and Security & Mitvim Both these organisations are offering an

alternative security paradigm. By bringing together reputable thinkers on foreign policy,

as well as respected former senior security and military officials, moderate policies

can become a stronger part of the national security discourse in Israel

Shaharit Offering an alternative to the current

dichotomies defining Israeli society, Shaharit aims to ‘expand the camp’, by bringing

communities and organisations together through their shared interests and values

to create a more harmonious, inclusive and cooperative country

Mossawa - The Advocacy Center for

Palestinian Citizens of Israel Promotes the economic, social, cultural

and political rights of Palestinian citizens in Israel. Works to enhance the social, legal

and economic status of Palestinian citizens, advocates for policy changes, as well as

protecting human rights and opposing extremism

Israeli Association for

Distributive Justice Represents the public interest and promotes

the equitable distribution of natural resources in Israel; they closely monitor

the activities of the Israeli Lands Authority, pursue legal action, lobby decision makers,

and rally activists in local communities

By providing support and capacity building, NIF is helping to form

coalitions, assist grassroots activists to campaign for change on the local level,

and creating links between the local arena and national decision makers

Building up from the grassroots

NIF is building a stronger society by creating space for dialogue and engagement between Jewish and

Palestinian-Israelis; bringing the sectors together to oppose extremism and

widening the range of voices against racism; developing shared projects at a local level to promote tolerance; and supporting education in schools about

inclusion and tolerance

Strengthening shared society and

combating racism

NIF is focused on launching a number of new programs aimed at strengthening infrastructure,

including a new GetUp-style online organising platform, and a media

monitoring organisation

Creating new and impactful

programs to effect change

NIF is working to fulfil the vision of Israel’s Declaration of Independence by

supporting freedom of speech; opposing the Occupation; promoting the rights

of minority groups, such as Palestinian citizens of Israel, refugees and asylum

seekers; and ensuring government transparency and accountability, using

such tools as public education and strategic litigation

Safeguarding human rights &

democratic infrastructure

Promoting religious freedom in Israel by fostering a more inclusive society that embraces the rich diversity of Jewish identity. Priorities include: creating a

sphere of non-religious, civil law for all Israeli citizens; working for marriage

equality; eroding the Rabbinate’s monopoly over Jewish life; strengthening moderate Orthodoxy; and opposing the

exlusion of women

Promoting religious pluralism

and tolerance

Supporting groups that campaign for social and economic justice for all Israelis

— religious and secular, Ashkenazi and Mizrahi, Jewish and Palestinian — and

advocating for equitable access to education, employment, affordable

housing, public services and health care. In particular, NIF focuses on ‘distributive

justice’, which works for better access and outcomes in Israel’s periphery

Advancing social and

economic justice

By advancing the representation of women and young adults in Palestinian

society, and promoting increased funding on the municipal level, NIF is playing a role in achieving full social

equality for Israel’s Palestinian minority. Other focus areas include: land planning

and distribution; education; and using the court system to overcome structural

inequality and discrimination

Empowering Palestinian-Israeli society
