Next week is set to be a hot one, with temperatures forecasted to reach 30 degrees celsius. Please

make sure, if your child is attending school, that you send them in with suncream (clearly labelled

with their name) and a water bottle.

In school this week ...most of our reception, year 1 and year 6

children have returned to school since 1st June!

Reception children became finger painting artists this week, when they made firefighter paintings as

part of our heroes and helpers topic!

Class 6 have been working hard to clear the Nature Garden of all the weeds that have grown up during lockdown. We are hoping to revamp the overgrown corner as part of our days in school, so if you have any spare soil or seeds, please contact Miss Booth! We’ve also been having a great time with the chickens while gardening. Thanks to Elinor for cap-turing all the fun!

Year 1 enjoyed a socially distanced PE lesson - with Miss Khan demonstrating an exemplary sprint start!

The book exchange is back!

The book exchange will now take place on a Wednesday for those children not attending school. It will

continue to be in the Key Stage 1 playground and we will continue to provide a way in which you can

change your reading books safely. If it is raining, we will set up under the Year 1 cover.

Windrush

Windrush Day 2020

Monday 22nd June is Windrush Day: a day to celebrate the Windrush Generation. Across Lambeth, we have been invited to take part in a doorstep sing-along at 10:27am. Why 10:27am, you ask? It is to represent the 1027 people who arrived on the original Empire Windrush. The song this year that has been chosen by members of our local Lambeth community is You Can Get It If You Really Want by Desmond Decker. This song was chosen as it is ‘uplifting, fun to join in singing, encourages people to dance and is instantly recognisable.’ We will be singing in school and we would love to see photos and videos of those at home singing from their gardens, windows or doorsteps! You can find the lyrics in your class Google Drive. As well as the Windrush song, there are also some lovely art activities that teachers have saved in your class Google Drive. We are encouraged to print and colour - or copy and colour - the poster to display in our windows to celebrate the Windrush Generation and all they have contributed - and continue to contribute - to society. Book Week

As well as London Maths Week, it is also Independent Bookshop Week. If you’re looking for some new books for your family, why don’t you check out our local independent bookshops? Tales on Moon Lane work closely with St Jude’s to arrange author visits for our children. Round Table books is an inclusion-led bookshop in Brixton Village. They are run by the publishers Knights Of who have published St Jude’s favourites such as Knights and Bikes and High Rise Mystery. Independent Bookshop Week also runs the Indie Book Awards. Little Heroes of Colour by David Heredia A board book with bold pictures and simple captures that introduces children to 50 trail-blazers from a range of ethnicities who’ve shaped history in science, the arts, govern-ment and more!

Key Stage 1

The Diddle that Dummed by Kes Gray and Fred Blunt By the author of the ‘Oi…’ books, Flinty Bo Diddle is writing a tune for his fiddle but one of the notes refuses to behave and this causes no end of frustration for the poor composer.

Lower Key Stage 2

Malamander by Thomas Taylor I loved this book (Mr Ellis). It takes you on an adventure to the town of Eerie on Sea. A story about resilience, bravery and a legendary creature who lives in the sea to protect a pre-cious object. I could not put it down, I’m about to start reading the sequel!

Upper Key Stage 2

The Middler by Kirsty Applebaum This is the best book I’ve read this year (Miss Booth). Parents, this is dystopian fiction to rival Margaret Atwood. Children, this is a book about friendship, questioning and standing up for what you believe in. A great book to read side-by-side. Everyone should read this book!

Earth. They were ‘most

commended’ at the

festival and St Jude’s

are so proud!

Hector

He has really impressed

us with his fantastic

writing at school. He has

been so resilient in his

writing and included so

many wonderful

adjectives in his

sentences .

Myla

Myla has settled back into

school so well and

produced some amazing

story writing. She has also

made some beautiful art

work, linked to our topic of

heroes and helpers. Well

done Myla!

Angus

I have been so

impressed with the

language that he has

been using during

maths. He is able to talk

about different lines and

angles and give me the

properties of shapes.

Teddy

He has been doing some

incredible writing about

his own imaginary world

based on the Land of

Roar. He has also been

uploading his incredible

expanded noun phrases

work to the Google Drive.

Next week is Maths Week London 2020! Maths Week London’s mission is to ignite a love of maths in children across the capital. Numeracy is a vital skill and we believe it can and should be enjoyable, relatable and accessible. Your teachers are planning lots of fun activities to celebrate mathematics next week, including the Sumdog Contest (running between Friday 19th and Thursday 25th June). This is your chance to compete against classes from across the capital to become London’s champions! There will also be a maths quiz, hosted by your teacher, for you to have a go at - why not compete against your family? Watch out for our Challenge Tuesday Tweet too, which will also have a maths twist! As always, we can’t wait to see what you get up to at home. Sumdog Maths Contest

Sumdog's Maths Week London 2020 is here! It starts today (Friday 19th June) at 8am, and finishes at 8pm on June 25. All of our children have been entered. Here are some things to keep in mind during the contest:

Pupils can play at any time.

For the score to count, the Maths Week London 2020 activity must be showing in the green panel on

the left of the pupil's screen when they click to start each game. Their scores are based on correct answers. A class's score is the average of the scores from all students from that class who take part.

To appear on the leaderboard, at least 5 students from a class need to play.
