Last Wednesday’s MeetingCommittee meetings last week saw a very poor attendance, so all combined for an impromptu Club Forum.

Jenny Gill gave a brief, clear presentation on an excellent fundraising idea that she has put together.   More information will be provided to members at meetings as this unfolds. 

Next Week’s MeetingOur speaker next week is Robert Fisher AM a former Agent General to the UK.

Jotik, the young principal of the Angel Academy School in Kathmandu will also give us an update on what is happening at the Academy and also tell us a little about the Refuge for the elderly and street children that he uncovered and which also needs assistance. 

Proud GrandparentsIt was wonderful to have Warren Milner back after five months in the UK.

Warren and Rosemary are proud grandparents of a b e a u t i f u l l i t t l e granddaughter, Zetta Rose, who is their very first grandchild.

Congratulations to Warren & Rosemary. 

Money SpinnerSec. Di sought a ruling from the office of Australian Government Volunteer Grants on whether the Club could use

some of the Grant money to purchase a Money Spinner. 

Unfortunately, the answer came back in the negative.  Ken is awaiting an answer from Claremont Quarter about placing a Money Spinner outside Coles in the Quarter.  It is a passive source of fundraising which the club is seriously considering. 

Rotary Foundation Simplified Grant

A cheque for $1,125 was received from the District Simplified Grant Committee to fund microscopes for three schools. 

Dir. Rob has sent invoices to several cubs who have donated microscopes to schools and the RCFB is paying the Science Teacher’s Assoc. of WA for the microscopes presented to schools thus far.

The project is going ahead steadily, with initiation for microscopes coming from both schools and Rotary clubs.

Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA)Newman College, who participated in RYDA last June with 11 students have booked 210 students for 16th and 17th August. 

This is the most positive message we can be given about the value of RYDA.

With this number of students the activity would have to be run over two days.  There are costs involved, however, once again, with the number of students the Club should not be out of pocket, however, i f some sponsorship could be sourced, it would be a bonus.  Do any members have contacts in the car industry who may be interested in being a sponsor?

The Club will need to provide a number of volunteers over the two day period and as it involves youth under the age of 18 a Working With Children’s card will be necessary.   Sec. Di has these forms so all members who currently do not have a card are

encouraged to do so as many projects in Rotary involve working with under 18 year olds. 

Angel Academy in KathmanduLast Wednesday there was discussion about assisting with a water filtration project at the Angel Academy as the Club has been given $450 specifically to be put to a water project.  As this project is listed with Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) any personal contributions are tax deductible hence the difference in funding between and cost of the project and the $450 in hand could be sourced from personal contributions if members felt inclined to give personal support. Flowing on from the Nepalese Pilgrimage of Hope reunion last week at Christ Church Grammar, in excess of $5,000 has been received by Ken for student sponsorship that will go through RAWCS to Nepal. 

Aqua BoxesAnother International Service project discussed was Aqua Boxes.  Those present agreed they would like to see one of these funded.   It is a plastic box(with tap) containing water purification tablets which allows clean water to be provided  in communities requiring water.   Cost is around $700. 

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Camp (RYLA)Unfortunately we have missed the early bird discount for RYLA, however, the Club has an outstanding young man to sponsor for RYLA.  He is Calum Foulner, who was introduced to Ken and Di by Br. James.  Calum has his own ‘Community Moving Forward’ project in Nepal, where he and his friends are helping a school near the Tibetan boarder. Information on Calum was in last week’s bulletin.  You can access his website on: www.thecmfproject.com 

RCFB Charity Fund Inc.Last Monday two Bank accounts were opened for the new RCFBCFI, the first being an Operating  account and the second is a Gift Fund account.  The Gift Fund account was opened with a $2,500 donation by our member Blaise Johnson.     Many thanks Blaise for your wonderful s u p p o r t a n d contribution. 

We are off and running and hopefully this will be the first of many contributions.   Tax Deductible Gift Status is being sought for off shore projects.

Notice of the AGM and a copy of the Rules of Association have been sent to all members  for the AGM of the Charity Fund on 8th December.

Signatures are being gathered from all members so that all members of the RCFBI are also members of the RCFBCFI.   Most members have signed the sheet, however there are still a few to be obtained. 

Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay Inc. AGMA reminder that the AGM to select a new Board for the Club will be held on 8th December.

Please consider nominating for one of the Board positions plus a Club Service Director is urgently required to see out the remainder of this Rotary year.

The Club is already running smoothly, with Treasurer, Bulletin Ed. and Secretary keeping their jobs happening, a CSD would be required to put out an Agenda and produce Minutes for each meeting (as is required by Directors of all committees), to coordinate the fundraising and social events, weekly program – speakers are already ably managed by Bill Hassell, however, a Roster needs to be maintained for the weekly Attendance Officer and Host.  Basically, everything to keep the Club running smoothly is the responsibility of the Club Service Director.

No Meeting 1st December - The Dr Ken Collins AddressA reminder that the usual club meeting on 1st December has been cancelled and the official meeting for that week is the Dr. Ken Collins Address on the Rotary Foundation on Monday, 29th November.

Members not yet registered are asked to please do so as caterer’s require numbers and table seating  will be organised in the coming days.  To enable the club members to be seated together we need your registration immediately.   The Rotary International President Ray Klinginsmith will be the main speaker, with an outstanding Alumni speaker, Maryanne Tokome-Amu as the support speaker.   It is a rare honour to have speakers of this calibre address Rotary in Perth, so please support the event. 

Goodbye to Clive and Hsiang-Ju BoddyIt is with deep regret that the Club farewells Clive and Hsiang-Ju as they depart on 28th November for their new home near Cambridge, UK.

We wish you and your family every success and happiness as you embark on your new life in the UK.  Please keep us informed about your book Clive.  You will be missed and we look forward to seeing you in July when you return to Perth for a visit.

December is Family Month

In the Rotary Calendar, December is family month. Christmas is a wonderful part of the year when families can spend time together and celebrate the year that has been. We Rotarians need to include our families in our Rotary lives and Christmas provides us all with a great opportunity to do that.

Looking back over the last four weeks, Rotarians in our District have been busy doing many things. Here are some of the things that have been happening.

Club Activities

The Rotary Club of Matilda Bay held its annual Craft Fair in the grounds of the University of WA on October 31. The weather on the day was beautiful, the stalls were fully subscribed and there was big crowd to enjoy to the v a r i o u s d i s p l a y s . Congratulations go to the Club on a successful.

The Rotary Club of Belmont held its “Legends Night” on November 4. This night recognises three “legends” of the Club, namely Wilf Jackson, Jim Reagan and Stan Perron. An award is given in each of their names to young people in three different categories which are Apprentice Cabinet Maker, Apprentice Jockey and Student at the Belmont City College. It was a wonderful night with about 100 people attending. To top off this great evening, the Club inducted three new members.

The Rotary Club of Cunderdin held its annual craft fair in town on November 13. This was followed that same evening with a concert at Kuringal, a charming bush camp just south of town. It was a wonderful evening with over two hundred people attending. There is something special about spending a night under the stars chatting to friends and listening to country music. It is a great example of what a small Club can achieve when its members

work together; well done Cunderdin.

On November 15, the Rotary Clubs of Mount Lawley and West Perth presented their Allied Health Professionals Awards. This is the second year the two Clubs have collaborated to present t h e s e a w a rd s i n consultation with Curtin University and the Health Department. Nominations were received for each of the seven categories representing Allied Health Professionals. A winner in each of the seven categories was selected and recognised on the night and then an overall winner, the Allied Health Professional for 2010, was announced. It will be good to see this wonderful Vocational project be repeated in future years.

Rotaract

It is my plan to extend my official Club visit programme to include our Rotaract Clubs and our one Interact Club. I had the pleasure of visiting with the Rotaract Club of Perth on November 17. It was inspiring to meet with this group of young committed people who are involved in a number of very worthwhile service projects and who enjoy themselves whilst they do so. We need to support our Rotaractors, include them in Rotary Club activities, and encourage them to become Rotarians in due course.

Rotary Club of Mindarie Chartered

The Rotary Club of Mindarie held its Charter dinner on November 5 and became our newest Club. It was chartered with 22 members. Congratulations go to the President and members of the Club on an excellent function and special thanks go to PDG Bill Benbow, the District Extension Chair, and PP Geoff Russell, the District

G o v e r n o r ’ s S p e c i a l Representative, for their efforts in bringing this to fruition. Thanks also go to the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley who sponsored the creation of this new Club. We look forward to seeing the Club grow in size as it participates in Rotary service projects.

Membership

I recently received advice from Rotary International on the member numbers in each Club on July 1 this year; these are the official start numbers for District 9455. The starting figure for the District as a whole is 1,419. Following the chartering of Mindarie and growth in a number of Clubs, the District total membership has grown to 1,472. The Clubs with the biggest growth since July 1 are Broome and Crawley. I know a number of Clubs are still striving to achieve that desired breakthrough in membership development but I know that they are all trying and I recognise the excellent support they are receiving from Jerry Pilcher and his District Membership team.

Foundation Contributions

I have now completed all of my Club visits with the exception of one country Club. When I visited the Rotary Club of Kununurra, President Jim Bailey handed over a substantial cheque which is the Club’s contribution to The Rotary Foundation. This gave a wonderful start to the Rotary Foundation month of November.

Club contributions to the Foundation have been growing steadily but we still have a long way to go to achieve the wonderful result of last year. Clubs are encouraged to make their donations to the Foundation soon and not leave it until June next year to post off their cheques.

Strategic Planning

On October 24, a planning day was run to develop a District

Strategic Plan. The group that met under the guidance of Liz Pattison included members of the Board, some Assistant Governors, some members of District Committees, some Presidents and some President Elects. Since then, I have met with Liz Pattison and Hugh Frost to progress some of the detail. We will soon get out a draft of the plan for wider comment. 

Clubs are also encouraged to develop their own strategic plans. Some have done so and a number have prepared annual operational plans. More can be done in this area. There are plans in place to train a group of Rotarians in facilitating “Visioning” for Clubs. Through a visioning exercise, it is hoped that Clubs will feel motivated to extend their plans to a strategic level.

International Fellowship of Cricketing Rotarians

During the last week of October, the International Fellowship of Cricketing Rotarians (IFCR) met to play a series of hotly contested but friendly matches. The camaraderie that has built up between the members of this group over the years was evident. Such fellowships make the world that much smaller and more friendly. PDG David Horsley from the Rotary Club of Northam organised the weeks event and his elevation to the position of World President of the IFCR for the next two years was announced at the wind up dinner; congratulations David.

Probus

Mr Frank Stewart Cross OBE JP, celebrated his 100th birthday on November 13. Frank spent 34 years as a member of the Rotary Club of Perth, he is a life member of the Probus Club of Mandurah and is a current member of the Probus Club of Dalkeith-Nedlands. At an event to mark his birthday, PP Peter Burns, the District Chair for Probus, presented Mr Cross with a Probus Service Certificate. Mr

Cross was Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry for 24 years; members of the CCI participated in the birthday celebrations.

Training

PDG Geoff Simpson, Chair of the Leadership and Training Committee, arranged for a number of Presidents Elect to participate in the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) Part 1 Course. It was a worthwhile day and Geoff plans to run this again on a number of occasions including travelling to country centres to give Rotarians in more remote areas a chance to benefit from the RLI programmes.

Zone 8 Institute

The Zone 8 Institute, a meeting designed to keep past, present and future Officers of Rotary International informed on Rotary matters, is being held at the Burswood Convention Centre this year during the period 3-5 December. The few days immediately preceding the Institute are set aside for Governors, Governors Elect and Governors Nominee to receive training and information on Rotary and its programmes. We won’t see this again for more than another decade so it is a great opportunity to present Rotary in Western Australia to other Australian and world Rotary leaders. Rotary International President Ray Kl ing insmi th and Past Rotary In ternat ional President DK Lee will be spending most of the week in P e r t h i n connection with the Institute. The Convenor of the Institute is our Zone Director, Stuart Heal.

Historic Moments: Paul Harris Fellow RecognitionBy Susan Hanf  Rotary International News16 November 2010 

The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of US$1,000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

It was established in 1957 to show appreciation for and encourage substantial contributions to what was then the Foundation’s only p r o g r a m , R o t a r y Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study, the precursor to Ambassadorial Scholarships. 

The first Paul Harris Fellows include 1937-38 RI Director Allison G. Brush and longtime RI Treasurer Rufus F. Chapin, both for donations they made in 1946. Mrs. Adan Vargas was the first woman to receive the recognition, for a gift made in 1953. Mrs. Harry L. Jones was the second, and one of only five people

recognized for contributions made in 1957. 

Early Paul Harris Fellows received a certificate of recognition. In 1969, the Foundation unveiled the first Paul Harris Fellow medallion at the RI Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. Japanese metal artist Fiju Tsuda created the piece under the direction of then-past Foundation Trustee Kyozo Yuasa. Today, Paul Harris Fellows receive a certificate and pin. They are also eligible to purchase a Paul Harris Fellow medallion. 

Rotarians have a tradition of supporting the Foundation by honoring others. Ida LeTulle Taylor became a Paul Harris Fellow in 1978 when her husband, then-District Governor Vann Taylor, made a donation in her name in honor of their 34th wedding anniversary. The gift also made her the 25,000th Paul Harris Fellow. 

At the International Assembly in 1979, then-RI President-elect James Bomar challenged each Rotary club to make one non-Rotarian a Paul Harris Fellow. The Rotary Club of Pikesville, Maryland, USA, responded by making a donation in the name of Mother Teresa in 1980. The entertainer Pearl Bailey also became a Paul Harris Fellow through a joint effort of the

The number of Paul Harris Fellows reached the one million mark in 2006.
