Letter from the President One day in the early days of computing, General Electric had a problem with their computer. All of their engineers took a look at the problem. Although each was wise, they were unable to understand the complexity of the machinery and repair the error. After the one tap, the computer roared back to life and began working!

A few days later, GE received an invoice from the retired engineer for $10,000! This was a lot of money in those days, so they returned it to the engineer and asked that he itemize his invoice.

A few days later, they received an itemized bill which read:

This Week's Meeting

This Thursday, Dr. Phillip Sherwood and his wife Nancy from District 5180 in California will be our guests.

Phil was a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar to UWA in 1976-77, where he completed his Honours in Organisation and Business Management in his first year and in his second year he worked on a second Masters in Commerce. He later became a member of the Rotary Club or Rossmoyne.

Barry McKinnon (a former GSE Team Member to South Africa) was a member of Rossmoyne during the time Phil was in that club, so he will be bringing the Sherwoods along on Thursday.

Phil is currently a member of the Rotary Club of Arden Arcade who supported our application for a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant for Manna Industries' ‘Kids in the Kitchen’.

Any members who would like to join the Sherwoods, McKinnons and Collinses for a meal at Valdanos after the meeting, please let Secretary Di know ASAP so that a booking can be made.

Last Week's Meeting

Kylie West, whom we sponsored for the recent Group Study Exchange to District 1640, Normandy, along with Team Leader Jim Benson, attended a very small meeting to inform us of the benefits the Group Study Exchange program has had on their lives.

Kylie bubbled with enthusiasm as she showed slides of places visited and experiences shared during their tour in May / June. The language barrier, different attitude on nuclear power, visit to Villers Bretonneux, Mount St Michael and a host of other once in a lifetime opportunities all left lasting impressions. (No romance for Kylie, though she reported that one of her hosts thought she'd make an excellent match for his son!)

Our applicant for the next Group Study Exchange team, Nana Kurosaki, was also in attendance. Japanese by birth, she moved to Perth 12 years ago and is now an Australian citizen. She is studying accounting, and works with Rajah at the City of Nedlands. If successful, Nana would like to learn about Germany's handling of various environmental issues such as reducing the carbon footprint, and extensive use of cycle ways.

Interviews took place on October 2nd. We hope to hear soon how she went!

Club Apparel

A final reminder to send bring along orders for club tshirts, caps or jumpers by October 13th.

Orders have been received from the Forsdykes. If you have emailed an order but it has not been received, please let President Simone know ASAP so we don't miss you out!

Our New President Elect

Rob Rohrlach has kindly agreed to step into the President Elect position recently vacated by Bill Hassell.

Pre-Halloween Party

On Saturday, 30th October, please join members and spouses, ‘Friends’ of the Club and potential members for a social function at the home of Toni and Bill James, 4 Archdeacon Street, Nedlands.

Please bring a bottle of drink and dish to share. There is no cost to attend.

The James' home will be decorated for Halloween, and those who would like to enter the spirit and dress up for the occasion are encouraged to do so!

Time to be advised.

OVERDUE Club Dues

Nine members still have not yet paid their annual dues.

Members concerned are asked to remit at least a first instalment (six months dues) to Treasurer Toni by cheque or to arrange payment by direct debit into the Club’s Operating Account as soon as possible.

District Governor's Visit

A final reminder that our DG's Official Visit is happening the following week, and we need final numbers for catering ASAP.

The cost of the dinner meeting will be $40 and it is BYO drinks as the cost does not include any drinks.

We are required to pay for a minimum number of 30 for the dinner, so please help us ensure we have at least that many attending by coming along and bringing family and friends!

Board members need to arrive at 5:30pm to meet with the DG, with the dinner meeting 6:30 pm for a 7:00 pm start.

DG's Letter for October

October is Vocational Service month. Most Clubs have some Vocational service activities either planned or in progress. Rotary has its roots in Vocational Service and the concept of vocational diversity in our Club membership is one way that we can recognise this avenue of service.

I'm looking forward to the Rotary Club of East Perth's Policeman of the Year Award and the Allied Health Professional of the Year Award presented jointly by the Rotary Clubs of Mount Lawley and West Perth. These are just two of the excellent vocational projects of which I am aware.

I always enjoy meeting Youth Exchange students. As I have visited Clubs both in Perth and country areas during September, our New Generations month, I have had the pleasure of meeting a number of students recently arrived in Australia. These young people are wonderful ambassadors for their home countries.

Recently, I had the chance to meet with the successful candidates who will participate in the 2011 National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). They had their orientation day on September 18; they received a briefing on what to expect in January. This will be the second occasion when some students will attend either the University of Western Australia or Curtin University; previously, all participants went to Canberra.

The Youth Driver Awareness programme (RYDA) continues to attract more interest. There is to be another event in Midland on September 23 and the three Clubs in Geraldton are working together to plan an event or events with the schools in Geraldton.

On the weekend of August 21 and 22, a few of us from District 9455 managed to attend the Australian Rotary Conference in Canberra. Our Rotary International President, Ray Klinginsmith, and our Zone Director, Stuart Heal, both spoke at the Conference. The theme for the Conference was: "Towards a Stronger Rotary in Australia" and the key note speakers gave inspirational talks on the theme and linked to it the new RI Strategic Plan.

Youth Programs Pave the Way into Rotary By Ryan Hyland – RI News 30-9-2010

Rotary youth programs have prepared Andrea Tirone well.

As a current Rotaractor, a past participant in her district's Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program, and a former Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial scholar, she is hoping her experiences serve as a springboard into Rotary.

"In Rotary, I will have a variety of service possibilities available to me, locally and internationally," Tirone says. "There is so much diversity in the work Rotary does. It can give you exposure to so many different areas, and help you find what your interests really are."

Tirone was introduced to Rotary during the District 7070 (Ontario, Canada) RYLA in 2004. She describes it as one of the best weeks of her life, and says she was impressed by the planning that went into it.

"Learning about each other through different workshops and activities, I

formed these incredible, lifelong bonds," she says. "I thought to myself, if Rotary can put on such an amazing week, then imagine what it would be like to be part of the whole organization."

Tirone says she plans on becoming a Rotarian but wants to stay in Rotaract as long as possible.
