Some of us got an opportunity to represent New Horizons and showcase our work in the form of oral and poster presentations for the first time in our lives! We got an opportunity to interact with eminent pediatricians and allied professionals from all over India. It was a proud feeling to see New Horizons receive 3 awards – 2 for oral presentations and 1 for a poster. Only 5 minutes were allowed for oral presentations, teaching us the importance of being crisp in our delivery. Congratulations to all those who worked for it. A special thanks to all our seniors for encouraging us to participate. We would like to thank them for being there for us, if not physically then over the phone, and helping to boost our confidence. The entire month of September felt like a preparation leave for our board exams and reminded me of my school days, when our teachers and parents would constantly boost our confidence to prepare us for the final exams!” - Ms. Diksha Gajria Titles: 1. Should the use of Visual Reinforcement Audiometry be increased for identification of hearing loss? Anam Shaikh, Ameya Bondre, Morasha D’souza, Samir Dalwai, Waheeda Pagarkar 2. Comparison of motor and mental developmental quotients across risk groups in Indian infants. Diksha Gajria, Mona Gajre, Deepti-Kanade Modak, Catherine McClain, Piyadasa Kodituwakku, Samir Dalwai 3. Clinical profiles of children with Autism referred to a multidisciplinary intervention centre in Mumbai. Sohini Chatterjee, Samir Dalwai, Deepti Kanade-Modak, Nita Mehta, Sandhya Kulkarni “Both the quality and the scale of our work showcased at NCDP EMBICON, 2016 and the sincerity and effort put in by every presenter is worth applauding and learning from. Equally important is the support provided by Dr. Samir, Ms. Deepti Kanade-Modak, all the vertical heads and the entire team! We all worked with our routine schedules, and very varied levels of "comfort" and experience with research or public-speaking! Yet, we stuck to our resolve of providing substantive, data-driven content through wide-ranging topics (from Mondini's dysplasia to music therapy for Autism; from school refusal to speech concerns; from cerebellar ataxia and visual reinforcement audiometry to every kind of IQ, DQ, Autism, ADHD and CP!) Hence, we have done justice to the huge body of work we do at New Horizons Group and we should persevere to do so. And finally, a personal take-away - training and working with each team-member builds the trainer as well - it opens multiple windows in a chaotic, ‘researchy’ mindspace to give insights on the meaning of teaching. Thank you all, immensely, for that!!” – Dr. Ameya Bondre Titles: 1. Effect of multidisciplinary intervention on receptive and expressive communication ability of children with developmental concerns. K. Amdekar, Eminent Senior Pediatrician and Teacher Ms. Madhumita Chandrasekaran explaining the research study to Dr. Y. K. Amdekar Ms. Sandhya Kulkarni - NCDP EMBICON 2016, was a great experience for three reasons: First, the presence of a very large number of Pediatricians in a National Conference on Developmental Pediatrics was amazing and it indicated that there has been a tremendous growth in awareness about Neuro-developmental concerns. This is indeed the need of the hour as Government of India with its RTE act is moving towards Inclusive Education and mainstreaming education for every child! Second, it was a moment of great pride to see the work done by New Horizons Group on the map of India as a background. It is a different thing to see your work being appreciated locally but at the national level it was really special! Third, the highlight of NCDP was our own New Horizons Group's active participation in the Poster and Oral Paper presentations and organisation of pre-conference work shops involving veterans like Sohini, Nita, Anam on one side and freshers like Yasha on the other! Dr. Megha Jakhotia, Dr. Tanvee Priya, Dr. Priya Krishnaswamy - The NDCP conference was a very good learning experience. The topics covered in the workshop were very well thought of and were versatile. It was a fabulous opportunity to interact with national and international faculty whose vast experience will always be a treasure in our careers as Developmental Pediatricians. Our first opportunity to present a poster at such a platform was immensely enlightening! Ms. Deepti Kanade–Modak - Do you remember the Onida Ad of yester years?Do you remember the tag line? It said, "Neighbours’ Envy, Owner’s Pride!"That's the feeling I had during NCDP 2016. People were in awe when I told them that I work with Dr.Samir Dalwai at New Horizons Group. In 2009 we had done this conference when we had 3 centres but now we are bigger, with 5 centres and so many verticals. With Dr.Samir's popularity as the President, IAP, Mumbai and the National Chairperson of IAP Chapter of Neurodevelopmental Pediatrics, being a team-member of New Horizons and working with Dr.Samir brings a feeling of great pride. I think that the biggest advantage that we have is our TEAM and that's our biggest strength! In the auditorium we were constantly in the limelight as a TEAM. When we walked around the conference venue, people said, "That's the New Horizons Team." Even our students of New Horizons Institute of Education and Research have imbibed this sense of dedication and commitment which are the hallmark of New Horizons. This conference was an opportunity to get a big number of our team-members to read, write, analyze and think from a research perspective. Team-members rose to the challenge and realized their potential to engage in research work. To give a scientific platform to the large volume of clinical work that we do is a way to get recognition for our work and realize the value of the impact we are creating in the lives of children. We should all thank Dr. Samir as we come to New Horizons with a single dimension perspective about children due to our training and knowledge. But New Horizons makes us think about a child from the holistic perspective. Ms. Sohini Chatterjee - The fact that this conference had a packed hall of 800 professionals is proof enough that if the intent is genuine, then the outcome is always positive. There were many clinical topics, so everyone had something to learn in the conference depending on one's interests. Everyone worked really hard and Dr. Ameya Bondre helped all oral presenters with our content, timing and presentation. Finally, to enjoy with a wonderful team like us where everyone equally contributed in their special ways was the most beautiful part of this conference! Ms. Nita Mehta – Two points struck me during the conference. First, that due to the training and exposure given to us at New Horizons, this scientific conference seemed like common language we use in our every day work and the information was easy to understand. Second, that as so many knew about New Horizons, the conference seemed like our in-house program where all of us joined hands, interacted with faculty and presented in large numbers. Dr. Nayana Shirke – When I joined New Horizons, I knew about Dr. Dalwai. But I understood his contribution to the field during this conference. It was proved that Dr. Samir Dalwai’s contribution to Developmental Pediatrics is immense. I should say that Developmental Pediatrics is a field because of Dr. Samir Dalwai. Ms. Bhavya Gour - It was a great learning for all of us. Even though there were 800 doctors from different parts of the country New Horizons stood out with pride. Thank you, Dr. Samir for this wonderful opportunity to meet so many doctors and share the amazing work we do. The words we heard in the two days were: “Amazing work,” “Superb team,” “Excellent team work” and “New Horizons is just awesome!” Ms. Dikshita Choudhury - These two days have been such a great and enriching learning experience for me. Honestly speaking, I have been able to stand and present a poster for two days only because of the support and guidance that I have received from team members. Without them, it would not have been possible. Thank you for believing that I can present a case study in front of such eminent and experienced personalities! Ms. Suchismita Kadam - Apart from the opportunity of being a co-author, the conference was indeed a wonderful learning experience. Some of us attended a National Conference for the first time. We were proud of being associated with New Horizons! Additionally, it was a good way of meeting our mentors such as Dr. Anuradha Sovani Ma’am. A big Thank You and congratulations to all the winners! Ms. Gitanjali Pillai – We represent a brand, a brand called NHG! And I feel super proud to be associated with it and be able to test my own potential. None of us would have been ready with our presentations if it wasn't for Ms. Deepti Kanade-Modak’s and Dr. Ameya Bondre’s constant training, rehearsals and teaching. Every new experience may cause anxiety, but it's the learning that we take away. What an opportunity! Thank you, Sir, once again. NHG ROCKS! Ms. Tressy Renji - It was a wonderful experience. The respect that we received just for being a part of New Horizons was unbelievable. Just goes to show what the name “Dr. Samir Dalwai” means. We have all been made so capable that we can hold our heads high with pediatricians because we know our work so well. Thank you team NH! Proud to be a part of this team! Ms. Nirzari Pathak– I cannot even begin to express my gratitude for Dr. Samir and New Horizons as a team, for the opportunity to present a poster. I hope that l am able to express myself sufficiently when I say that due to the efforts of Dr. Samir and Team New Horizons, a golden era has arrived for children with special needs and their parents to make the quality of their lives better. Ms. Ananya Nagar, NHI student - We were able to relate to most of the topics related to Autism, Psychology and child development at the same level as pediatricians, which was a surprise. We took back our notepads filled with notes and our heads filled with a lot more detailed information. We also met eminent personalities and had the pleasure of interacting with them. It was also nice to see our teachers in action and being there as part of New Horizons. Team New Horizons Developmental Pediatrician Dr. Samir Dalwai (MD, DNB, DCH, FCPS, DNB and LLB) founded New Horizons Child Development Centre (NHCDC now NHD) in 2003. NHD has developed 5 centres and currently houses a team of more than 60 paramedical professionals. NHD provides multi-disciplinary services to more than 300 children daily with a ratio of one specialist to one child in each intervention session. New Horizons Health & Research Foundation (NHHRF now NHF), is a registered non-profit organization [Reg.No.U85100MH2012NPL2385 6; No.DIT(E)/80G/111/N/2014-15], which works in the areas of health, impairment and early childhood development. NHF follows a four-pronged approach: Research, Rehabilitation, Advocacy and Training. Established in 2014, New Horizons Institute of Education & Research (NHIER now NHI) is the educational wing of NHG. In May, 2015, TATA INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES (TISS), Mumbai and NHF entered a collaboration and offer diploma courses in Special Education and Rehabilitation Psychology. New Horizons Education and Training Solutions (NHETS now NHS) provides highly specialized solutions to schools in Mumbai. Our specialists are deputed at the school on a customized basis for conducting evaluation, intervention and counseling for children with academic, emotional and behavioural concerns. Dr. Waheeda Pagarkar started the New Horizons Audiology (NHA) and Hearing Aid Centre for Adults and Children in August 2014. In its first year, NHA has seen around 400 patients, out of which 20 were adults and the remaining 380 were children. 35 patients were diagnosed with hearing loss of varying type and degree while 10 were prescribed with hearing aids. Ms. Sumana Kumar, NHI student – The conference made me realize that there are important things that all of us working in this field need to be aware of, and it is not possible to keep any one area (Speech, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Special Education, Pediatrics, Developmental Pediatrics) distinct from the others. We all need to be on the same page, working as a team, making the child the centre of all the activities. On a personal level, I now feel that I am a part of the New Horizons team in a much bigger way, and feel very proud to be here. Ms. Agrima Ahluwalia, NHI student - The simplicity of the knowledge passed on in this conference was the most important feature. The various topics were presented in a simple manner and were easily understood by everyone present; whether they were developmental pediatricians, general pediatricians, clinical psychologists, or special educators. Overall, this conference will contribute to more children with special needs being identified and gaining early access to the required interventions. Ms. Vaishnavi Dholakia, NHI student - For me the conference was like a revision and brushing up of many concepts and many new things to learn. We were all there to gain knowledge and learn. The speakers were amazing as they have been working for years and have lots of experience but they made it so simple that it was easy to understand. Thank you for this experience! Ms. Swastika Bhattacharya, NHI student - Since the PGDSE batch just got over with exams, I could join the dots. It was easier to relate to certain topics such as the milestones, ASD etc. It was a huge platform to meet and know such senior pedatricians. I am really glad and grateful to NHI for giving me this opportunity. Ms. Sreemayee Sarcar, NHI student - The conference taught us that you should never restrict your learning and applications of a particular disorder, condition or concern based on a particular medical profession or occupational orientation. You should always keep your mind open to new ideas without any prior assumptions about a particular disorder or rehabilitation procedure. The information was not restricted for medical practitioners only, and for us students who are completely new to this field, the messages of early identification and intervention were clearly understood. Ten Poster Presentations by Team New Horizons

“Finally, the grand NCDP EMBICON, 2016 we all had been preparing for, is over. Only 5 minutes were allowed for oral presentations, teaching us the importance of being crisp inour delivery.

Congratulations to all those who worked for it. A special thanks to all our seniors for encouraging us to participate. We would like to thank them for being there for us, if not physically then over the phone, and helping to boost our confidence. The entire month of September felt like a preparation leave for our board exams and reminded me of my school days, when our teachers and parents would constantly boost our confidence to prepare us for the final exams!”- Ms. Diksha Gajria

4. Clinical profiles of children with Autism referred to a multidisciplinary intervention centre in Mumbai. Sohini Chatterjee, Samir Dalwai, Deepti Kanade-Modak, Nita Mehta, Sandhya Kulkarni

“Both the quality and the scale of our work showcased at NCDP EMBICON, 2016 and the sincerity and effort put in by every presenter is worth applauding and learning from.

Ameya Bondre

Ms. Sandhya Kulkarni - NCDP EMBICON 2016, was a great experience forthree reasons:

First, the presence of a very large number of Pediatricians in a National Conference on Developmental Pediatrics was amazing and it indicated that there has been a tremendous growth in awareness about Neuro-developmental concerns.

When we walked around the conference venue, people said, "That's the New Horizons Team."

Even our students of New Horizons Institute of Education and Research have

imbibed this sense of dedication and commitment which are the hallmark of New Horizons.

The words we heard in the two days were: “Amazing work,” “Superb team,” “Excellent team work” and “New Horizons is just awesome!”

Ms.

Team New Horizons

Developmental PediatricianDr. Samir Dalwai (MD, DNB, DCH,FCPS, DNB and LLB) founded NewHorizons Child DevelopmentCentre (NHCDC now NHD) in2003. NHD has developed 5centres and currently houses ateam of more than 60paramedical professionals. NHDprovides multi-disciplinaryservices to more than 300children daily with a ratio of onespecialist to one child in eachintervention session.

New Horizons Health & ResearchFoundation (NHHRF now NHF), isa registered non-profitorganization[Reg.No.U85100MH2012NPL23856; No.DIT(E)/80G/111/N/2014-15],which works in the areas ofhealth, impairment and earlychildhood development. NHFfollows a four-pronged approach:Research, Rehabilitation,Advocacy and Training.

Established in 2014, NewHorizons Institute ofEducation & Research (NHIERnow NHI) is the educationalwing of NHG. In May, 2015,TATA INSTITUTE OF SOCIALSCIENCES (TISS), Mumbai andNHF entered a collaborationand offer diploma courses inSpecial Education andRehabilitation Psychology.

New Horizons Educationand Training Solutions(NHETS now NHS) provideshighly specialized solutionsto schools in Mumbai. Ourspecialists are deputed atthe school on a customizedbasis for conductingevaluation, intervention andcounseling for children withacademic, emotional andbehavioural concerns.

Dr. Waheeda Pagarkarstarted the New HorizonsAudiology (NHA) and HearingAid Centre for Adults andChildren in August 2014. In itsfirst year, NHA has seenaround 400 patients, out ofwhich 20 were adults and theremaining 380 were children.35 patients were diagnosedwith hearing loss of varyingtype and degree while 10 wereprescribed with hearing aids.
