The author presents an early morning exchange between a daughter, Sandy, and her parents. The daughter and her parents think about the same things very differently as a result of their lack of mutual understanding. Take music for example. Sandy enjoys Green Waves very much while her father thinks it is horrible stuff. For another example, Sandy likes to take a shower as she can be alone and sing in the bathroom. But if she stays in the shower too long, her mom or dad usually bangs on the door to rush her. It is as if both Sandy and her parents are blind to what is important in each other’s worlds, which puts them in separate worlds and creates the generation gap between the old and the young.

Summary of the TextSummary of the Text

Page 6: New Horizon College English Unit 2 : Section A A Busy Weekday Morning.

The author presents what Sandy did on a weekday morning through a time order, describing a series of actions according to a sequenced order. To describe something according to the order of time is especially common with narrative writing. From the reading passage we can find that the presentation of details clearly follows the progress of time, as is apparent from the following words or sentences.

The beginning sentence of the story tells us about the time: The radio clicked on. This is a very strong reminder of the time. From the passage we find that it was 6:15 A.M., time for getting up. After a couple of events, we find that after her shower, the conversation went on and something more happened. Then suddenly she looked at the clock again; it was late, still a strong indication of the time passing. And at last she ran to catch the school bus, which tells us that Sandy left for school. The time marker is expressed through the action of leaving.

A Busy Weekday Morning

1. The radio clicked on. Rock music blasted forth. Like a shot, the music woke Sandy. She looked at the clock; it was 6:15 A.M. Sandy sang along with the words as she lay listening to her favorite radio station.

2. "Sandy," shouted her father. "Sandy, turn that music off!" Steve Finch burst into her room. "Why do you have to listen to such horrible stuff? It's the same thing over and over. I'm not sure it is really music though it does have rhythm. Hmmm. No, it isn't really music. It's weird. It is definitely horrible stuff."

3. "I like that music, Dad; it's my favorite group — Green Waves. Listen for a minute; I'm sure you'll like it. It has a really powerful message. Didn't you ever listen to music like this when you were a youngster?" Sandy reached for the radio to turn it up louder.

4. "No, no, don't do that. I can't stand it. The music I listened to had a message, too, but the words were clear and the musicians didn't use such offensive language. Turn that radio down so your mother and I can't hear it. I'm sure that music is hurting your ears as well as your brain. Now, would you please hurry up and turn it off? Get ready for school or you'll be late!"

5. Sandy walked into the bathroom and turned on the shower. At first, the water felt cold. It helped her wake up. Then, as the water got hotter, she thought, "This shower feels great and in here I can be alone and sing. No one disturbs me in here." She grabbed the soap and washed thoroughly, including her hair. If she stayed in the shower too long, her mom or dad usually banged on the door to rush her so she grabbed a towel and dried off.

6. After her shower, Sandy brushed her hair, put on her old, green T-shirt and some jeans and wrapped her sweater around her shoulders. Then she put on her makeup, grabbed her books and went to the kitchen.

7. She looked at the clock again; it was late. As usual, she didn't know what to have for breakfast, so she grabbed a glass of milk and ate a piece of toast while standing by the sink. Just then, her mother, Jane, entered the kitchen.

8. "Sandy, why don't you sit down and eat your breakfast? It isn't healthy to eat standing up."

9. "I know. Mom, but I'm already late for school. I don't have time to sit down and eat.“

10. Did you finish your homework, dear?" 11. "Yes." 12. "Do you have your instrument?" 13. "Uh-huh."

I'll brush my teeth when I'm done." 18. "You should brush your teeth when you wake

up and then brush them again after breakfast. Sandy, why are you wearing that old T-shirt? It's disgusting. I know you have some nice blouses in your closet."

19. "Mom, please stop." 20. "Stop what, dear?21. "Stop bugging me."

22. "Sandy, are you wearing eye-liner?"? 23. "Yes, Mom, I've been wearing eye-liner for

months. Isn't it pretty? It's called French Lilac Blue. I just love it." Sandy pretended not to notice that her mother was a little annoyed.

24. "Sandy Finch, you're too young to wear that much makeup. Please go upstairs and wash it off."

25. "Mom, I'm fifteen. I'm old enough to wear makeup. Believe me, all the girls at school wear makeup. Some have tattoos and pierced ears, and noses and tongues, too. Mom, I don't have time to talk about this now — I'm late. I've got to go. See you later." Sandy kissed her mother quickly on the cheek, picked up her books, and bolted out of the house.

26. As she ran to catch the school bus, Sandy thought of her older brother Bill who was away at college. He phoned her often so they could talk and share their problems, but she hadn't heard from him for a while. She missed him. Since Bill had gone to college, her mother bugged Sandy much more than before, and she was arguing with her mother a lot more than usual, too.

The first thing is to make sure that you have a 20-dollar bill and have learned how to say “phone card” in English. Then you walk to the post office, repeating the English words silently to yourself. When you reach the post office, you say word to the clerk, smiling hopefully. Then, after you’ve paid for the card, you find a pay phone. (Underlined parts are time markers.)

Views on Generation Gap

When it comes to the problem of generation gap, people’s ideas are not cut from the same cloth. Most of the old argue that young people should be responsible for the problem. They base their argument on the ground that young people either turn a deaf ear to the elders’ experience-based advice or set themselves against what the elders have been proud of.

Yet the younger generation reacts to the problem the other way around and holds that the opposite is just reasonable. From their angle of view, the older generation is too conservative to accept anything new, as a result of which, their voices are not taken into account, and their efforts are far from the requirements set by the elders. I am of the opinion that both generations should take the responsibility for the problem.

Much evidence proves that the generation gap results just when the two generations miss connecting or understanding with each other. As long as both sides keep their minds open to each other’s outlooks on the world and get ready for adjustment of their own ideas to the social needs, therefore, the gap between them will be narrowed down in time.
