Domestic Violence: !Help EndItNow!!With the NFL headlines of the past couple weeks, we're reminded that domestic violence is not just an issue confined to the realm of football but one faced by millions throughout the United States and the world.  !!

Recognizing that fact, the Adventist Church kicked off a global campaign nearly five years ago to end violence against women, EndItNow. Launched by Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) and the Seventh-day Adventist Church's Department of Women's Ministries, the campaign calls for standing up for — and living by — our belief in every person's worth, dignity and human rights. !!

The campaign supports various efforts around the world to help women and girls in abusive environments. Learn more about how you can contribute by visiting enditnow.org. And if you know of someone locally in need of help, reach out to the newly named HopeWorks (formerly Domestic Violence Center of Howard County) for resources: www.wearehopeworks.org. The center also has a 24-hour hotline (410-997-2272).!

My oldest niece was about 18 months old when she discovered the power in running. When she broke free, we could not catch her because she was fast and sneaky. She would force us into a game of chase that was cute for her but embarrassing for us.

One day, while our family attended an event at a cathedral, Jose and I were watching my niece. We sat near the front but to the side of the church so as not to disturb anyone. Shortly after the event began, my niece fell asleep, so we laid her down beside us on the pew and turned our attention forward.

The cathedral had an expansive chancel (front of the church) with a raised platform and ornate communion altar. The décor was what you would expect: The platform had elaborate chairs, tall floor candle stands and podiums with the Bible and prayer books.

While intently focused on the speaker, I was suddenly distracted by a small movement. I glanced at the front of the cathedral and saw my niece’s shoe disappear behind the altar. “Oh, please, no,” I thought to myself as I looked to where she had been sleeping. She was gone. I looked up just in time to see one of the floor candle holders begin to sway, a candle precariously balanced on top. Then the heavy tapestry covering the communion altar began shifting as, I imagined, she found delight in pulling the long fringed edge.

I didn't know what to do. If I went after her, she would likely scream and run away, thinking it another game of chase. Then an idea came to me. I would tempt her with something that would be much more fun than a tapestry and candlesticks. I grabbed my keys, which had a small flashlight attached to the keychain, and her sippy-cup with her favorite juice. I crept toward the platform and knelt behind one of the larger chairs. I began

to click the flashlight on and off to get her attention. It worked. She turned to look at me

I kept flashing the light and pointed it at shiny objects near me. She finally let go of the candlestick and began to walk toward me. But she stopped halfway, as though trying to decide whether what I had was better than the tall, shiny candlestick.

I continued to flash the light for what seemed like hours. Then I brought out the sippy-cup, cajoling her with it. She ran into my arms. With the sippy-cup firmly in her mouth and the flashlight in her chubby fingers, I carried her back to our pew.

Temptation is an endless part of our everyday life. We are tempted by things shiny, bright and colorful; things that tickle our powerful cravings and deep-rooted desires; that capture our attention and flame our curiosity. We may have the best intentions to stand strong and resist yet still cave in to them.

We are not in this struggle alone. God understands and wants to get involved in our struggles as early and as often as these temptations arise. “You can trust God to keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can’t stand up against it, for he has promised this and will do what he says. He will show you how to escape temptation’s power so that you can bear up patiently against it” (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Will you allow God to help you escape the powerful allure of your temptations?
