In 2014, our Festival runs from June 2-8, and will include 14 events, including, for the first time, a student matinee performance, and a special concert for the residents and clients of Aldaview and Nithview. We also welcome our most ambitious line-up of performers, including Valdy, Laura Smith, Al Parrish, The Good Lovelies, The Irish Descendants, Glen Foster, Alex Pangman, The Factory Arts String Quartet and Essential Opera.

presents its first-ever

student matinee on

Monday afternoon,

June 1. The event is a

performance of “The

River Rolls,” the musi-

cal celebration f the

heritage of Waterloo

Region that premiered

at New Hamburg Live!

in 2012.

The work has gone on

to be recorded, issued

as a CD, made avail-

able in its entirety on

line at www.theriver-

rolls.ca, and performed several times in the region

by the musicians featured on the recording. That

cast of performers will be on stage at Steinmann

Church Hall on Monday, June 1, at 1 p.m.

The June 1 performance is free of charge to all

students. A number of classes have already regis-

ered to attend; interestd

teachers, school admin-

istrators and parents

should contact New

Hamburg Live! execu-

tive director Paul

Knowles to register

([email protected];

519 662-6757).

“The River Rolls” cele-

brates the heritage of

our region, telling the

stories of well-known

historical characters

like Sir Adam Beck,

Barbara Schneider, and

William Lyon

Mackenzie King, as well as lesser-known millers,

merchants and pioneers. The songs touch down in

every area of the region, from New Hamburg and

Baden to Cambridge and Waterloo.

The creation of "The River Rolls" was made pos-

sible through a grant from the Region of Waterloo

Live concerts of "The River Rolls" received sig-

nificant financial support from The Boardwalk

and TLC Whole Life Pet Food.

New Hamburg Live's "TD All Access Student

Pass" program is made possible through a grant

from TD Canada Trust. This program allows all

students to attend every event at New Hamburg

Live! free of charge; it also allowed the Festival to

offer this premier student matinee.

The songs of "The River Rolls" tell accurate his-

torical stories, from the first time hydro came to

Baden, to the life and sad death of a black ex-

slave who settled in Waterloo. But the songs –

with lyrics by Paul Knowles and music by

Charlene Nafziger and Mike Erb – are filled with

humour and rollicking tunes.

This unique concert will entertain students and

adults alike; and teachers will have the full

resources – songs and narrations – of the website

to support further classroom discussion.

New Hamburg Live! welcomes the

award-winning Canadian folk trio, The Good

Lovelies, for their premier perfomance at our

festival. They will be on stage at Steinmann

Church Hall on Tuesday, June 3, at 7:30 p.m.

Funny and upbeat, with just a pinch of

sass, the Good Lovelies‘ textbook three-part

harmonies, constant instrument swapping

and witty stage banter have enlivened the

folk music landscape since they joined forces

in 2006 for their first show at Toronto’s funky

Gladstone Hotel.

The Good Lovelies (Caroline Brooks,Kerri

Ough and Sue Passmore) were friends first

when they decided to take the leap from their

day jobs and head out on the road making

music across Canada.

Their tireless rain or shine outlook and

undeniable mutual respect have helped the

trio weather years of constant touring. With

jaunts to Australia, the UK and the US, the

Good Lovelies’ road-tested tenacity will bring

them further afield than ever before.

Lighthearted songwriting and irresistibly

buoyant dispositions have made them the

darlings of the summer festival circuit,

including spots at the storied Mariposa and

Hillside Festivals and the Montreal Jazz

Festival. They have toured with Stuart

McLean and the Vinyl Cafe and appeared on

coltish spirit of a young Mildred Bailey or Ella

Fitzgerald. There are champagne bubbles in

Pangman's voice as she growls, sighs and

wears her heart on her sleeve. She plays it

straight and she plays for keeps."

A superb song stylist with growing composi-

tional chops, the gifted Toronto scenemaker

has built a loyal fanbase amongst jazz listen-

ers and dancers alike. Alex's dedication to her

music goes far beyond was might be called a

passionate pursuit – it's more like a life-long

obsession which began in her teens upon first

discovering Louis Armstrong and Jack

Teagarden along with amazing singers like

Mildred Bailey, Julia Lee and Maxine

Sullivan. "An exciting new world with this

immense songbook opened up to me."

Alex quickly began delving deeper into the

sophisticated shellac of the 20s and 30s which

eventually led to a connection with guitar

great Jeff Healey. In very short order, Healey

produced her impressive 1999 debut They Say

(Sensation Records) as well as the 2001 fol-

low-up, You Can't Stop Me From Dreaming.

After getting a Songwriter of the Year nom-

ination from the National Jazz Awards for her

tune Melancholy Lullaby for the 2001 film

Torso: The Evelyn Dick Story, Alex received

two more nominations in the Vocalist Of The

Year category, and then a Ken Whiteley num-

ber she sang for the 2003 feature film Falling

Angels won a Genie for Best Original Song.

The blessing of more frequent bookings

would also prove to be a curse. Smoke-filled

venues were definitely not the place for some-

one battling lung disease. Alex's physical con-

dition worsened to the point where a double

lung transplant was deemed essential. A

donor was found in time and the surgery was

a complete success. Alex has roared back to

full strength in a remarkably quick recovery

that's borderline miraculous.

New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts enters

new territory in 2014, welcoming top Canadian

comedian “That Canadian Guy” Glen Foster to our

event. Glen performs on Thursday evening, June

5, at 7:30 p.m. at Steinmann Church Hall.

Glen Foster has been one of the busiest comedi-

ans in Canada for nearly thirty years. He didn’t

just work the road, he’s one of the guys who

helped to build it. Glen appeared in his first one

hour comedy special, “That Canadian Guy” in

2000 and, since then, the moniker has stuck.

Many of his fans don’t even know his actual name,

but they do know one thing: “That Canadian Guy”

is one of the funniest comedians anywhere.

Glen’s comedy appeals to those people who

appreciate a more intelligent, but slightly “edgy”

brand of humour. His material is mostly clean and

always clever, topical and timely, reflecting his

own experiences, current events and popular cul-

ture. He’s also not afraid to inject his own politi-

cal and sometimes “politically incorrect” social

commentary from time to time.

Alison & Laura are a classically trained

duo who present sparkling duets in a variety

of genres. This charismatic combo comprises

soprano Alison Jane Taylor and mezzo-sopra-

no Laura Aylan-Parker. The duo will perform

“classical music sung by classy dames” at St.

George’s Anglican Church, Friday, June 6 at 2

p.m.

Since they began harmonizing in 2010,

they have been striving to select repertoire

that demonstrates their vivacious personali-

ties and highlights their classical roots. This

program features selections from opera, folk

and musical theatre that explore love,

heartache and girlish glee. Purcell's "Sound

the Trumpet" opens the program; the audi-

ence will recognize some well-known Mozart

duets and arias, including the playful

"Sull'aria" and Cherubino's famous aria "Non

so piu," both from The Marriage of Figaro.

Other classical favourites include Delibes'

"Flower Duet" and Offenbach's "Belle Nuit."

Alison & Laura are thrilled to present their

own vocal arrangements of folk classics

"Homeward Bound" and "Danny Boy," as well

as some beloved musical theatre selections,

including "My Favourite Things" from The

Sound of Music and "I Could Have Danced All

Night" from My Fair Lady.

New Hamburg Live! is very pleased to present a unique blend

of talent at our Friday evening performance. We welcome three

iconic Canadian musicians, who have never before shared a stage.

Valdy, Laura Smith, and Al Parrish will bring their best to a

“songwriters’ circle” event,

where the best work of each

of these performers will be

featured. The three will also

support one another instru-

mentally and vocally, and

will have the added talents

of pianist Charlene Nafziger

and guitarist Earl Filsinger

backing their work.

This breath-taking collec-

tion of talent takes the stage

Friday, June 6, at 7:30 p.m.

at Steinmann Church Hall.

Valdy, born Valdemar

Horsdal in Ottawa, Canada

has been part of the fabric of Canadian pop and folk music for over

Vancouver Island to Texas to New Zealand, he's a

singer, guitarist and songwriter who catches the

small but telling moments that make up life.

Remembered for Play Me a Rock and Roll Song,

his bitter-sweet memory of finding himself, a

relaxed and amiable story-teller, facing a ram-

bunctious audience at the Aldergrove Rock

Festival circa 1968, Valdy has sold almost half a

million copies of his 13 albums, has two Juno

Awards (Folk Singer of the Year and Folk

Entertainer of the Year), wth a total of seven Juno

nominations and four Gold albums to his credit.

Valdy's recent CDs include "Contenders", a col-

laboration with friend and fellow singer/song-

writer, Gary Fjellgaard, and a solo release, "Viva

Valdy: Live at Last", a two-CD package, one live,

one studio, with a total of 25 tunes, and a lyric

booklet.

Along the way, Valdy has taken his music to a

dozen different countries, from Denmark to

Australia and been an often-invited performer at

the prestigious Kerrville Festival in Texas. His

recent television appearances include Canada AM

and Open Mike with Mike Bullard. Valdy has also

been a panelist on Front Page Challenge, and

played a lead role in an episode of The

Beachcombers original series.

Today, he is based on Salt Spring Island, where

he lives with his wife Kathleen, three dogs and a

large cat.

In Laura Smith's music, real emotions ebb and

flow. Your heart is in her capable hands, and like-

wise, she has entrusted you with hers. As she

sings, her strong, melodious voice waves and

catches, snagging on a scar here and there, surf-

ing on a wonder, staring down a riddle... As you

listen, the two of you go along together; brave and

surfacing; calm and inquisitive. "My work is all

very simple, earth-based," says the Maritime-

based singer/songwriter.

Laura has experienced exhilarating career

highs. Her 1994 album b'tween the earth and my

soul elicited unbounded critical acclaim, enor-

mous airplay, national television appearances and

a demand for live performances.

Born and raised in London, Ontario, Smith’s

public debut performance occurred at Smale's

Place, the coffee house where she worked as a

waitress, when she was invited on stage to sing a

song with the headlining act. She has lived in

Toronto, Cape Breton, and now Halifax. In 1996,

she won two East Coast Music Awards (Female

Artist, Album of the Year) and two Juno nomina-

tions (for Best New Solo Artist and Best Roots and

Traditional Album). In 1995, her song "Shade of

Your Love" was the most played AC song in

Canada. In 1997, she won a Gemini Award for

Best Performance in a Performing Arts Program

or Series.

In May 2003, Laura received an Honorary

Doctorate in Humanities from Mount Saint

Vincent University. She performed the role of

"Marilla" in Anne and Gilbert, the Musical during

the summers of 2005 and 2006.

Al Parrish, formerly of the ground-breaking

group Tanglefoot, grew up in Toronto singing in

church choirs and playing tuba in the high school

band. A friend convinced him to join an after-

two handsome gentlemen

arrive to rescue them – and

one of them looks very

familiar.Donizetti's hilarious Il

tures, as the bride's scheming ex, a selfish moth-

them apart. The cast features a talented range of

The Irish Descendants, a huge hit at New

Hamburg Live! in 2011, return to our

Festival to perform wonderful, toe-tapping,

down east music, in concert on Saturday,

June 7, at 7:30 pm at Steinmann Church Hall.

Founder and front man Con O'Brien is joined

by bandmates Dave Panting, Robert Kelly

and Patrick Moran.

Formed in the spring of 1990, The Irish

Descendants have been a mainstay in the

Newfoundland and Canadian music industry

for over two decades. In that time the band

has performed over 4000 shows across North

America and beyond! With the founding mem-

bers all hailing from various outport fishing

communities, the original goal for the group

was to take the music that they all learned

and performed home in their kitchens, to the

festival stages, pubs, and concert halls of their

beloved Newfoundland. In a very short time,

after the release of their first CD Misty

Morning Shore (1991), the first CD ever

released by a Newfoundland band, it was

clear that they were on track to take their

music on a worldwide journey!

The independent success of that first

release was a bright moment for the band.

The Newfoundland public was excited by the

music and it soon sold over 15,000 copies.

That success, led to signing a 5 album inter-

national recording deal with Warner Music

Canada, another first for a band from the

province. This relationship set the seeds for

what has been a whirlwind 21-year career.

The group began touring across Canada with

a vengeance, some years doing close to 300

shows, and began to make their mark in the

mainland markets. The trail they blazed

would make way for a huge wave of successful

bands and artists from the province for many

of the following years!

The band stuck gold on the third recording,

Gypsies and Lovers (1996). With a big Celtic

wave sweeping North America, they were

primed for success, and less than one year

after its release the recording attained certi-

fied Gold status in Canada, and would go on

to sell over 100,000. With that success, came

an East Coast Music Award for entertainers

of the year, and then, a coveted Juno award

for, Best Roots Traditional Group. Attaining

“Juno status” helped to propel the group to

the next level, taking their wares to the inter-

national stage. The band has performed wide-

ly across North America over the years. The

band has released 14 studio recordings.

The music of The Irish Descendants is

steeped in a rich tradition. Con O’Brien is the

oldest member of the 12th generation of his

family living on the Island! The Irish

Descendants are one of the products of this

proud heritage!

TD Bank Group has partnered with New

Hamburg Live! for several years, helping to

fund the program now known as the TD All

Access Student Pass.

The program is exactly what it sounds like

– all students, from elementary school

through university, can attend any New

Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts event, free

of charge.

This year, with the support of local branch

manager Jon Shilling, TD’s contribution was

increased to $4,000. This will allow the

Festival to continue to provide free admission

to all events, but it also will help to fund two

new Festival features – the June 2 student

matinee performance of “The River Rolls”,

and the June 7 concert in partnership with

Aldaview Services, featuring vibraphone mas-

ter Tom Cummings and his band.

Both of these events are new this year. The

student matinee performance features a cast

of eight musicians, celebrating the heritage of

our region in song and narration. The

Aldaview concert is geared to developmental-

ly challenged adults, their caregivers, families

and friends.

TD All Access Student Passes can be

obtained at the New Hamburg TD, from TLC

Pet Foods, through area schools, and at the

door at Festival events.

A newly commis-

sioned multi-media

work will premier at

New Hamburg Live!

Festival of the Arts in

2015. Entitled “Across

the Senses: A marriage

of visual art and song,”

the piece will celebrate

the artists of Waterloo

Region from its earliest

days until now, in song,

spoken word and visual

images.

Featured will be

visual artists such as

Carl Ahrens, Homer

Watson, Peter Etril Snyder, Matthew Kousal, Nancy

Lou Patterson, Tony Urquhart, Ruth Abernethy and

many others.

The work is being created by the same team of com-

posers and lyricist who produced “The River Rolls”, the

musical celebration of the heritage of Waterloo Region

that premiered at New Hamburg Live! in 2012, and

has been performed several times since, including in a

student matinee at this

year’s Festival. The

music for “Across the

Senses” is being com-

posed by Charlene

Nafziger and Mike Erb;

lyrics are by Paul

Knowles. Many of the

musicians involved in

The River Rolls will

return to play a part in

the new work.

“Across the Senses”

will include 15 songs,

narration, and images of

the work of the featured

artists. Partial funding

for the creation of this new work is being provided by

the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund.
