Australia Post Mailing “Service”Members and subscribers will be mostly aware that there was a small delay with the October magazines being delivered into letter boxes. But this was eclipsed by an almost two-week delay with the November magazine mailings. These were lodged with Australia Post on Friday 27 October but it took until Friday 10 November for the first deliveries to be recorded by Sydney-based members/subscribers. AP’s excuse when it was finally received was: “Our mailing centres were working at full capacity and we apologise for the delay”. AP has a monopoly on mail and there is no alternative. The Society’s Redfern office received over 300 calls from concerned members/subscribers. We hope that the December mailings return to a resemblance of “service”.

Wednesday 15 November 2017.With the construction of what we now call light rail proceeding

apace in Sydney and Newcastle, it is interesting to observe that both cities once had extensive tramway systems, Sydney’s being one of the largest networks in the world. We then called them simply ‘trams’. Change in government policy meant that the old tram networks were to close, and R1 tram 1995 made it into the history books by being the last tram to run in Sydney on the closing of the system in 1961. R1 1995 has been restored to its former glory and now resides as part of a restaurant in the former Rozelle Depot, curiously now situated in the Sydney suburb of Forest Lodge. So it was to see the current use of the old tram depot that the Luncheon Club visited what is now the TRAMSHEDS (current name and spelling) which forms the commercial/retail shopping precinct of the redevelopment of the adjacent and former Harold Park Trotting Paceway. Led by Luncheon Club regular and tram buff David Taylor, we were treated to a potted history of the area and the role the Rozelle Depot played in Sydney’s once vast tram network. This was followed by lunch at the nearby Harold Park Hotel.

It was a great experience and thanks to David for his research and presentation to inform our group of around 45.

This was the last outing for this year and the Luncheon Club is now in recess. Outings resume in March next year and on 21 March 2018 Bill Phippen will show us the features of the Long Cove viaduct at Lewisham.

At Paterson early Thursday morning a three-man crew, tour director and three passengers climb on board a railmotor built in 1938 for a

rail cruise around the south west branch lines of NSW. Rail motor HPC402 was to have 17 passengers on this tour of the wheat lines so pickups at Broadmeadow, a brief stop at Berowra to pick up morning tea and lunch, then Hornsby, Concord West, Picton, Goulburn and Cootamundra gave us a full passenger load of two Englishmen, an American, two Victorians, a South Australian and eleven New South Welshmen on our way to Temora for the first night’s stop. A long but enjoyable day.

Early breakfast at Temora Ex-Services Club and it was off to Temora Station and we are heading for Lake Cargelligo via Barmedman, West Wyalong and Ungarie. We are in John Holland controlled area and pass silo and ground storage of grain many times until the end of line at Lake Cargelligo. Where do you have lunch in the country? The pub. So back to the Central Hotel Ungarie for lunch.

Ungarie, Youngareen, Kikoira, Naradhan and the end of another line. These are clearly rail lines to move the grain. Places that no longer have platforms. Some places where there are only silos and ground storage of grain. West Wyalong is the overnight stop for tonight so back to Ungarie and an Indian dinner in the motel restaurant.

Day 3 and we are heading for Hillston, so back to Temora to visit the Station Museum and on to Griffith for lunch. Saturday morning in Griffith and the main street is busy and off to find our own lunch. After a country meat pie and a cream bun, we are on our way to Hillston to the stop board at the end of the line.

Our tour does not have assigned seating so and with opportunity to sit up front with the crew or down the rear seeing where we have been moving around and getting to know our fellow passengers is just part of the tour. The two Englishmen and American have flown out just for this tour. The South Australian volunteers with Pichi Richi railway based at Quorn in SA and discussions of dinners and breakfasts relate to getting a tour down to South Australia.

We travel back to Griffith and continue to Narrandera for another night’s sleep. Transport from the station to the motel was by the Lions Club “Tourist Train”.

Control informs that we have to be away from Narrandera before 7:45am or we will be held until after the Sydney train passes though at 8:20am tomorrow.

So Day 4 has us away from Narrandera before 7:45 and we head to the Main South line via Junee junction and down the main line though Wagga Wagga to The Rock and onto the branch to Boree Creek. An additional passenger by the name of Tim Fischer awaits us at Milbrulong station for the run out to Boree Creek and shouts us all a drink at the Boree Creek Pub.

Lockhart is the lunch stop, so back on the railmotor and return to Lockhart for a great country lunch provided by the Milbrulong Red Cross ladies of the Lockhart area. Homemade vanilla slice, I could stay all afternoon but we have to get to Cootamundra for Sunday night accommodation so back to the Main South line at The Rock and a fast run to Cootamundra and a short walk to our motel for the night.

Due to a track possession near Paterson on Monday night our railmotor has to be back in the Rail Motor Society depot before 7:00pm. An early departure before 6:26am means early breakfast and we are all ready before the scheduled departure. And we are away early. Turning the railmotor has us heading to Cootamundra West and a change of direction for the fast run back to Sydney and on to Paterson.

A great five days touring the south west branch lines of NSW.Thanks to a great crew and Tour Director supremo Spencer Ross.
