Pickets Post Newsletter August 2021

Well summer is here and finger crossed the country is getting back to some sort of new normal. Since the last time I typed we have had a few changes. Sadly Mr Ian Fraser has now stood down from Sites Officer and I would personally like to thank him for all the hard work he has put into helping the DA over many years. Although standing down I hope we can call on his wise advice from time to time, either on our social media or when I catch up when passing.

We are actively recruiting some new faces to the committee and by the next Pickets Post hope to have news of our new sites officer, mean while John Burst has kindly stepped in to help. Both John and Brenda have been out finding extra sites for week-end meets please support them if you can also give some feedback on the Facebook post please.

Err………What’s the Wi-Fi code?

So back to the title. We have been away exploring the beauty of Cornwall on a five van site. If listening to the rumour mill, Cornwall is full and you can’t find a campsite. Well I’m pleased to report that it isn’t if you look at going off grid. We went to a lovely five van site at Trescowe Meadows, where we met Angie and Mike the owners who where very pleased to see us. The site is located very close to Penzance, well managed and easy to find. I asked if the were full and to my surprise they had pitches still available through the summer. When you look at the club sites they are full and I can only think that new camp-ers are not aware or have the need of Wi-Fi in this modern world. They are missing out on these delightful five van sites which have the personnel touch with helpful owners. We cycled out around the roads and found that anywhere that was a little bit more remote and involved walking to be

`uncrowded and most cafes and pubs had room to accommodate weary travellers for rest and good food.

We are off to the F1 British Grand Prix after this adventure and staying at Park View in Croughton near to the Silverstone track. Having visited this site several times, we are looking forward to the spectacle of Red Kites flying over head while gazing out over the lovely countryside.

If you have some favourite five van site please write a few words and some pictures to share with other members, it helps keep these sites going and hopefully they will continue for many seasons to come.

The two I have mentioned can be found on the CCC website.

Tony

Brenda & I are currently staying at the NFDA THS at Ballard School, New Milton. It is a

beautiful location in the grounds of the private school and very conveniently located to

visit the town or nearby attractions, like the very interesting :-

Sammy Miller motorcycle museum

This site really is a hidden Gem, with a lovely flat, well mown field alongside the extreme-

ly well cared for sports field. There is a good one way system for vehicles and a separate

pedestrian access past the pond, with visiting waterfowl just 100m from a convenience

shop, or 300m to the start of the multitude of shops in the highstreet and the railway sta-

tion, which can’t be heard from site. There are ample water taps, a skip for rubbish and

really good chemical disposal point. The stewards are very friendly and knowledgeable,

having stewarded this site for years. They all do a superb job and being very efficient

quickly book new arrivals in with a smile. This year we have a brand new payment sys-

tem, where we can now take card payments, removing the need to handle cash, and this

is working very well

Below are a selection of photographs taken on the site, just in case you have never visited

before

Bournemouth Air Festival 2021

Come and join us at our new site for the Bournemouth Air Festival at The Homestead,

West Parley September 2nd to the 7th

This is a replacement site for our Airshow weekend and it is lovely, a wide open meadow

surrounded with mature trees and hedges. It is on the flight path to and just a few hun-

dred metres from Bournemouth airport, which is the staging point for all visiting aircraft.

A regular attendee at

the Airshow is the fabu-

lous Battle of Britain

Memorial Flight. A real

fan favourite, with the

Spitfire, Hurricane and

the Lancaster Bomber.

There will be numerous other flying

displays from vintage warbirds

through to the ultra modern aircraft

and helicopters. If you decide to ven-

ture down to the main display line at

Bournemouth beach, we can highly

recommend the pier area , which has

excellent views and multiple static

displays and entertainment for the

whole family

Although the exact line up of aerobatic

displays is yet to be announced, we al-

ways see a few acrobatic display

teams. Often the Red arrows attend

and again a real fan favourite. If you

can get there in the evenings the after

dark displays, lighting up the sky are a

real treat too. In fact there is so much

to see and do, the Airshow never dis-

appoints

A note from our Social Secretary Brenda

Hi everyone

I hope this finds you all well? As I write this we are sat in our motorhome at Ballard, and

what fantastic stewards we have in Janet, Brian, Sue and Don. We are always looking for

stewards to come along and volunteer. Just one weekend a year to give back something

would be so much appreciated by everyone. It is very rewarding you get to meet every-

one make new friends have fun, so even if you have never done it before you will get to

co steward with some experienced stewards to get to learn the ropes. It is simples no

stewards, no meets.

Now, looking forward to the festive season this year, we will be putting on a Christmas

type social event. We will have lots of games, music, fun for everyone. Date time and

venue to be confirmed.

There will be prizes for the best festive dressed.

You will also have a chance to post your Christmas cards to your friends as postman pat

will be there. The big man dressed in red carrying a big sack is all ready primed to put in

an appearance. Please bring a present for a loved one or a friend with a label saying

who for and they will receive their gift from Santa.

So start getting your thinking caps on for your fancy dress. Keep updated on our Face-

book page New Forest DA, our Website newforestda.com, and here in pickets post,

many thanks everyone

Your Temporary Holiday Sites

By the time you read this Ballard School will be open. If attending either Ballard School or Wareham

RUFC PLEASE phone 24 hrs. before coming to ascertain there is a space available as we have had a

much larger than usual interest in these two sites

Swanage & Wareham RUFC, Bestwalls Road, Wareham

Opening on August 4th 2021 at 12 midday £12.50 per night (Guests staying overnight in your unit who are not members are charged at £3.50 for temporary membership) DIRECTIONS

Follow the A351 to its junction with the A352 (Weymouth to Wareham Rd) then turn left into Wareham Go straight over at the traffic lights right to the end of Bestwalls Rd then left into site. DO NOT FOLLOW YOUR SAT NAV ( These are council directives we are asked to follow to avoid the sharp turn at the traffic lights) Large, quiet, flat site about a 10 minute walk into the cen-tre of Wareham for buses to Swanage, Weymouth & Poole. Local shops, cafes, Sat. Market. Wareham Wednesdays Entertainment on the Quay. You will be expected to observe the covid rules current at that time. Children are welcome but are the responsibility of their parents or guardians at all times. Please do not let them play by the water taps, Elsan point or rubbish bins. Note there will be other members of the public on the site during our stay so it is important that you keep an eye on them. Dogs too are welcome but must be on a short lead at all times on site and exercised off site. Please do not walk them through the adjacent rugby field. Drivers are reminded that it is strictly 5mph when on the camping field. Remember there are FREE ROAMING CHILDREN! Whilst we do not object to you having a barbecue please DO NOT USE THE DISPOSABLE TYPE. You are encouraged to meet friends off site as if they come onto the site then they MUST BOOK IN AT RECEPTION and leave TRACE and TRACK details. The other change this year is that you will be able to pay on site with your credit or debit card. We hope you have a lovely stay with us. Your stewards will be Janet & Brian Setchell with help from various other members throughout the month. The site will close promptly at 12 midday on September 1st as we also have to get to Birchwood to set up for the following day. Birchwood

Do not forget that if you want to come to the THS at Birchwood you do have to book. You will need to telephone me for availability. 07513409978 Opens on 2nd Sept at 1pm and closes at 11am on 30th Sept. Special price to the DA with EHU is £15.50 pun. Full use of all the facilities.

Also opening for September is the lovely quiet site at Breamore House. Opening on 1st Sept at 12 midday and closing at 12 midday on 27th Sept.. The cost is an end of season bargain at £9

pun.. All the above rules will apply plus there you are not allowed to have your dogs off lead anywhere on the estate as it is a Working Estate. The es-tate includes quite a few of the roads nearby so please be aware. There is quite an interesting Museum adjacent and entry to that includes en-try to Breamore House too. Next to the Muse-um is a Tearoom serving snacks and afternoon teas but I am not sure which days it is open now as it has changed hands. There is a pub in the village which serves meals and a little further afield there is a lovely com-

munity shop which I found very interesting as it served a wide variety of goods including local produce. The stewards will be able to give you directions to it. Chris and Linda Sawkins will be there ably assisted by Jill and Roger Smith and the last week a new family trying out stewarding so thank you, hope you enjoy the experience and return again to help in 2022. If you want to venture further then take a trip into the forest which is not far at all or visit the lovely town of Salisbury. Buses run from the village or take your car and then use the Park & Ride on the outskirts to access the town centre as parking is limited. New stewards are a must if we are to continue to run these lovely holiday sites so ask about it whilst on site or contact me direct. I already have the dates for 2022 if you are interested. I wish you all a safe and happy summer camping and hope to see many of you out on at least one of the holiday sites arranged for you. Without successful holiday sites we do not have in-come to run the DA or provide you with any treats. Due to the Covid situation we have been unable to celebrate the DA’s 50th birthday this year but hopefully we will be able to do it in fine style during next year. Finally, If you know of any large suitable field for camping at least the size of 2 x rugby pitches so looking at 100 units, that is not in the New Forest District Council area will you please let me know so that I can assess it’s suitability for use as a THS site. We remain open to suggestions but very few sites are actually suitable. Janet PS I am overdue retirement so if you would like to take on this role please speak to myself or our Chairman Tony for more information. I have already booked sites for 2022 as we need to keep rolling. Birchwood next year will be in June as I hope to be able to go abroad one last time with family in the September.

Sites News August 2021

Well, it has been a very busy few weeks working as sites officer. Brenda and I have chased up various

leads on sites to find a few extra for this year and planning for the next few years ahead. Who knew that

sites inside the New Forest National park need booking at least a year ahead and ideally 2 or 3 years

ahead. We are on the case with that, but would welcome suggestions or requests to help us provide

sites that the members want

The second May Bank Holiday, Queen's Jubilee Celebrations and our DA 50th Birthday Meet is to be held at Church Farm Sixpenny Handley from Wednesday 1st until Monday 6th of June 2022. We have booked it like this as Thursday is also a bank holiday. The hall is booked from 6pm until 10.30pm Friday and Sat-urday and 9 until 1pm on Sunday morning for tea round the pole, hopefully. We have also found a nice new site for us, just up the road from Ballard School in New Milton, at some fishing lakes. We hope to book for this site for 2022. We would hope to rally there May/June so as not to clash with the THS. This year we have added

Warren Park Farm 5th to 8th of August £10 pun + £3 EHU (only a few available)

Gorse Farm Blissford BH weekend 26th to 31st August £8.50 pun

Bournemouth Airshow meet at a brand new site, The Homestead Parley

02nd to 07th September £10.50 pun

Please use the booking forms on our website to book a space on these meets. I will send out payment requests a few days before each meet.

Where there are gaps in our weekend programme, please do consider our lovely THS sites through the summer. Each is in a lovely area and really worth the visit

Please also check out our NFDA Facebook page

or our website

Hello everyone!

I hope you are enjoying getting out and about, either with caravan or without!! School

holidays are just round the corner and I hope that the weatherman has made a reservation

for some lovely warm sunny days so that we can all enjoy the summer – Boy! do we need

it!!!!

Since last month I have sent out 1 Get Well card to Joe Hornyak following an operation on

his hand and we hope it’s back to full “pulling pints” power again! I also sent a Get Well

card to one of our “retired” long standing members, Lesley Lynes, who has found herself in

hospital following a fall.

If you hear of anyone in the D.A. who is poorly or in hospital, please let me know and I will

get a card off to them right away, I know they are very much appreciated. Many thanks!

If you are setting off on your holidays, take care everyone and enjoy!

Just a thought…..

I hate it when a couple argue in public…

and I miss the beginning

then I don’t know whose side I’m on!!!

RAY’S JOKES

Two guys, one old and one young, are pushing their shopping trollies around Tesco’s when

they collide. The old guy says to the young guy, “Sorry about that, I’m looking for my wife,

and I guess I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going”. The young guy says, “That’s

okay, it’s a coincidence because I’m looking for my wife too, I can’t find her and I’m getting

a little worried”. The old guy says, “Well, maybe we can help each other. What does your

wife look like?”. The young guy says, “Well, she is 24 years old, tall, with long blonde hair,

blue eyes, long legs, big boobs and she’s wearing tight white shorts, a halter top and no

bra!”. What does your wife look like?” asks the young man. “Never mind” says the old guy

“Let’s look for yours!!”.

A Note from your Pickets Post Editor

I am sat typing this report on the hottest day of the year so far, sat in our van at the Bal-

lard school THS. What a lovely site it is, close to the amenities of New Milton in one di-

rection and easy access to the New Forest in the other. We have met members from all

over the country, some travelling as far as from Blackpool here. It is such a very popular

site, but only limited numbers of NFDA members. I think it is so easy to overlook what a

beautiful part of the country we live in, so we are trying to enjoy the benefits in glorious

weather

So far, we have camped at Moreton club site, Sixpenny Handley, Furzebrook, New Park

Farm, Bucklers hard and here at Ballard School. Next week we are stewarding the

Setthorns meet, then on to Warren Park Farm, then Gorse Farm, then our brand new site

for the Bournemouth Airshow meet at The Homestead, West Parley, a few weeks at

Wareham Rugby Club THS and on to the DA FOL at Birchwood. I think we are making up

for lost camping last year. But all these sites within an hour of home, makes it all easy to

do.

Hopefully we will meet up with a few of you on our various meets? We do hope so, as a

staycation can be nearly as much fun as touring in new areas. See our beautiful area in

all it’s beauty as the seasons change

As you will see elsewhere in this issue of Pickets Post, Brenda and I have been keeping

busy as well as camping, filling in as Sites Officer(s)
