The new continuity feature, Handoff, allows you to start a task on one device, and finish it on another. Start writing an email on your iPhone, finish on your Mac. Handoff even lets you take phone calls and send/receive text messages from your computer. This all happens automatically with devices signed in to the same iCloud account.

Handoff can also be built into 3rd party apps. Now your customers can quickly switch between devices and not lose their place, even on native apps.

Companies can now set up issued devices still in the box with Apple’s Device Enrollment Program. Even 3rd party apps can take advantage of being configured by the company. Mobile device management tools allow IT to push documents, including ibooks, to employee devices.

Document apps can now make their files available to other apps without making copies. Companies have the ability to access documents on their servers and edit them inside the app. Internal business apps are even more appealing with the IT mobile device management tools.

Swift is the new programming language for Cocoa and Cocoa touch. Designed for speed and safety, Swift makes writing code fast and efficient. Inferred types make code cleaner and less prone to mistakes. Swift can even be used for adding to existing apps because it works along with Objective-C.

The App Store has a lot of new features including preview videos, app bundling, and the new Explore tab. Users can now drill down through app categories and subcategories along with a new trending topics display to discover new products.

You now have the ability to really showcase what your app can do with preview videos. The explore tab makes it easier for potential customers to find apps with categories and keywords. You can even offer several products bundled together at a discount.

Testflight is a beta testing program that Apple has integrated with the new iOS 8 development tool suite. Testflight allows developers to invite users to test and give feedback on apps pre-release.

It’s even easier to enroll beta-testers , all that is required is an email address. You can have up to 1,000 testers (and 25 internal testers) all for free.

App Extensions are a way for 3rd party apps to safely communicate with each other. The Today extension allows apps to create widgets for at-a-glance information in the Notification Center, while the Share and Action extensions open up the ability to manipulate and share information between apps and online services.

You can now create widgets for your app to be viewed in the Notification Center. Sharing options allows users to share content from you app to social networks like Facebook or Twitter. Documents can now be shared between apps without making copies, which is great for companion apps.

iOS 8 SDK has over 4,000 new APIs, including several kits. This is the biggest developer release ever for Apple and has opened up a lot of opportunity for building amazing new apps.

Photokit offers apps access to saved photos and the ability to provide special editing within Photos with no need to open a standalone title. Healthkit allows all health and fitness apps to work together, creating one dashboard for an overall view. It also allows information to be automatically linked to users’ healthcare providers. Cloudkit offers free Authentication, private and public databases, and structured and asset storage services. HomeKit connects and communicates with smart devices within a user’s home. They can even create group actions for home automation. And TouchID is now open to 3rd party apps, fingerprint data can be used in lieu of usernames and passwords.
