Management of Your ValleyIn the past few issues, I have commented on theStrategic Plan for 32nd degree Masons and one itskey strategies. Another of those strategies is to“be an organization that is managed effectively.”Every member should insist on the Valley havingclearly defined goals and assuring that everyresource, program and activity contribute to theoverall accomplishment of our objectives. Sincemany members are not aware of how the Valleyis managed, perhaps some information will clarifythe roles and responsibility of Valley leadership.

Many fraternal organizations have a structure thatempowers a single elected leader to rule andgovern the organization during their term in office. The Scottish Rite, while delegating certain re-sponsibilities to the presiding officer of eachconstituent body, has established an ExecutiveCommittee consisting of various elected officersof the Valley, which acts similar to a Board ofDirectors of a domestic corporation. The officerscomprising the Executive Committee are definedin the Valley Rules and Regulations and terms ofoffice are staggered to provide some new mem-bers each year but still allow long-term continuityof membership. The members of the ExecutiveCommittee meet monthly and spend countlesshours working behind the scenes to manageactivities, monitor financial performance, assistcommittees and provide general direction for theValley.

Prior to 1950, the Valley was governed by adivided authority. The presiding officers plannedand executed fraternal activities while the Trust-ees had authority over the building and financialresources. There was also a powerful HouseCommittee that controlled the food service and allof the banquets, which were an integral part ofthe fraternal activities and had direct impact onthe budget expenditures. After the competinggroups set aside their special interests, theExecutive Committee was formed in April 1950 toprovide for uniform governance, long-term finan-cial stability and programming continuity.

This governing board consists of the four Presid-ing Officers of the constituent bodies, DeputyMaster of the Lodge, four Trustees and theTreasurer each having a vote on matters pre-sented to it. The Trustees and Treasurer areeligible for election for a maximum of three twoyear terms, the Thrice Potent Master, DeputyMaster and Commander in Chief are electedeach year and the Sovereign Prince and MostWise Master serve for two years each.

A new mantle of leadership has been passed withfive new Executive Committee members electedat the May 1st annual meeting. Every membershould be proud of the effectiveness of thisgovernance process and elected leaders whomanage it.

In the March issue of this publication youlearned that if every member of this Valley madea donation of $350.00 (96¢ a day for 1 year) our“Campaign for the Cathedral” would reach its goalof $10,000,000.00 (10 million).

Brethren, I had no idea that an article withsuch a simple theme would generate such anenthusiastic response! I have received dona-tions, cards, letters, phone calls and one on oneconversations with many of you. To all of you Ioffer a heart felt thank you.

If any of you have ever worked in the areaof fund-raising you may well realize that to getevery member of an organization to make this

type of gift is probablyimpossible. However, inplanning a capitalcampaign such as this, itis necessary to appealto those who are willingand able to makesmaller contributions aswell as “major donors”.

As a direct resultof your response, I havedeveloped a pledge card for those of you who areinterested in participating in this program. All youhave to do is contact the Cathedral Foundationoffice and a pledge card will be forwarded to you.All participants in the “dollar a day” program willbe recognized.

This year, the Executive Committee decided topresent a single award to a hard working brother whoexemplifies the best qualities of Scottish Rite Masonry. As in the past, this award is given to someone active incommittee work or on the stage who is not an MSA ora 33°, but who has given outstanding service over anumber of years.

This year's winner was born in 1933 in Linton,Indiana. He belongs to Centre Lodge #23 and joinedthe Indianapolis Valley in 1970. He has been a mem-ber of the guards since 1995, a member of the castsince 1997, membership development since 1998, andserved as president of the tour guides in 2001.

Somewhere I once readthat there had been 50,000books written about SpeculativeFreemasonry. Some are good, some are bad, and some, theanti-Masonic books, are ugly. And almost all of the 50,000books are out of print andusually can only be found inspecialized bookstores or from

privatesources.

So, if aMasterMason wishes

to know moreabout theorigins, devel-opment, andimpact of ourfraternity, whatbooks arereadily avail-

able?

Fortunately in the pastfew years there have beenwritten and published threeexcellent books about Specula-tive Freemasonry. All three havebeen written my non-Masonsand are the products of rigorousand honest research. And allthree show both the good andthe less than good points aboutthe Craft. All three books can beconsidered balanced and fair.

The first book that canbe recommended is "Revolu-tionary Brotherhood" by

Steven C. Bullock and is pub-lished by the University of NorthCarolina Press. At the time ofthe publication of the book,Bullock was Associate Profes-sor of History at Worcester

Polytechnic Institute. His bookcovers the origins of Specula-tive Freemasonry in the BritishIsles and its arrival in Englishcolonies. He continues his studywith the growth and develop-ment of Freemasonry and theappeal of its teachings to mensuch as Benjamin Franklin andGeorge Washington. He con-cludes with the impact of theMorgan affair and the transfor-mation of the fraternity.

"The Origins of Free-masonry: Scotland’s Century"is the second book. DavidStevenson, emeritus professor

of Scottish History at the Univer-sity of St. Andrews, is theauthor. Stevenson is also a non-mason and he has stated hehas no desire to become aFreemason. His theory is that

Speculative Freemasonrydeveloped in Scotland and notin England. This theory goesagainst the grain of most histori-ans of the fraternity. However,Professor Stevenson hasmarshaled a vast amount ofdocumentary evidence tosupport his claim. CambridgeUniversity Press publishes thebook.

The last book is "TheFreemasons" by Jasper Ridleyand published in this country byArcade Publishing. Ridley is anEnglish reporter and biographer. His book starts with the earlyhistory and development ofSpeculative Freemasonry andthen expands to include a worldview of the impact of the Craftupon the world at large Amonghis chapters are those onGermany, France, and Austria. This book was an alternativeselection of the History BookClub in March, 2002. It receiveda favorable review in The WallStreet Journal written by DanielEpstein. Mr. Epstein concludedhis review with the followingcomment, “In short, no lodge ofFreemasons could ever beworse, or any better, than themen who built it.” That messageshould be engraved on thehearts and minds of everyMaster Mason.

My Brothers,

As we move intothe late spring andsummer months mymind turns to thoughtsof baseball, lazyafternoons with thefamily and ice coldlemonade. How canwe help but feelcontent and satisfiedwith the world aroundus when there is so

much bounty and goodness everywhere we look.Indeed, we are more fortunate than we know to beliving in a safe and secure place in the greatestcountry on the planet.

It is for this very reason that we must resistthe temptation to rest on our laurels when thereremains so much to be done. We must steel ourselvesagainst the disloyalty that lurks in idleness, and the

Succeeding TSucceeding TSucceeding TSucceeding TSucceeding Togetherogetherogetherogetherogethertreachery that abides in sloth. We must now, morethan ever renew our commitment to Shrine, ScottishRite and Blue lodge Masonry to seek out good menfrom our communities and bring them to light inMasonry. We must tell the tale of the fantastic workbeing done not only for others through our charities, but for our own members through the values andlessons that if taken to heart make the hearer a betterman, husband and father. We must not allow our-selves to dance and play through the summer like theill fated grasshopper, but must work, plan and store forthe coming winter like the diligent ant.

Our winter will be here sooner than we know, and the tale will be our success, or failure as mea-sured by the new members we bring to partake in ourgood causes. How will the story end?

The answer is up to YOU and ME. Togetherwe can succeed and through Friends, Family andFraternity we can make this wonderful corner of theworld a little bit better, one man at a time.

have been able to help hundreds of clientsover the years, but the one single ob-stacle that I run into time and again isthe over-diagnosing of depression.

There has been a rash ofnew commercials -- a new genre ifyou will -- about prescriptionmedicines that have been airinglately on TV. It seems as if thepharmaceutical companies don'twant your doctor prescribing yourmedicine, they want you to suggest tothe doctor which medicine the marketingexpert thinks gives you the right image to give you amore complete, fulfilled, and happy life.

Or this: we have all been hit with the smalloval pill that comes revolving out of your TV screengetting larger and larger until you see people smilingand inhaling deeply and -- yes, it is purple --- the"little purple pill" -- it used to be Prilosec®

(omeprazole) but now it's Nexium ®(esomeprazole). The cutest but most inocuouscommercial currently airing is for Zoloft ® (sertraline

HCI). This is a single scrubbing bubbleviewed from the side and he's not

having a good day, until he takes hisZoloft and then he starts floatingaway sniffing the fragrant flowers."Oh, you're feeling a little blue?Let me give you something tohelp." "Hey doc, how about thefloating scrubbing bubble medicinethat sniffs flowers?" The under-

writers of our insurance companysays that Midwestern doctors -- by far

-- over-prescribe these types of medi-cines making it very difficult for some

individuals to get health insurance. Once you areprescribed an anti-depressant, it is listed for allfuture insurance companies to see and it is a bigreason for having a health application declined.

My point is this: Let your doctor do thedoctoring -- not the TV marketers. Always get asecond opinion. Don't be so quick to jump into ashort-term solution because it might develop into along term problem.

And, oh, by the way: What is the purpose of show-ing us all that "Greek" in parenthesis behind eachone of those brand names? (Z'allGreek2me.)
