WARTHER’S CARVERS MUSEUM IN DOVER

Ernest Warther, World's Master Carver, discovered early in his carving career the importance of knives that would hold their edge against ebony and ivory. Unable to find carving knives of such quality, he decided to make his own. His mother also com-plained about never having a sharp paring knife. So he developed his own techniques for tempering and sharpening a steel blade that would keep its sharp edge. Thus, out of necessity, was born the world's finest kitchen cutlery. Today, the Warthers are in their third generation of knife makers. His son Dave and grandsons continue the fam-ily business of producing outstanding kitchen cutlery with the same expertise and fine craftsmanship. A world famous collection of wood and ivory carved models of steam

trains, were created by Ernest "Mooney" Warther. Mooney's first fifteen carvings were of bone and walnut. In 1923, he was able to purchase ivory. On fourteen of these, he recarved the bone pieces out of ivory. From then on, he carved walnut, ivory and ebony. The last ten years of his life he carved only in ivory.

FLUME GORGE One of Franconia Notch's geological wonders, the Flume Gorge offers a spectacular 2 mile walk through a natural chasm on wide gravel paths and wooden walkways. Visitors travel through covered bridges, past waterfalls and through an 800 foot long gorge with its sheer 90 foot walls. Scenic pools, glacial boulders and mountain views abound. Bus service is provided July through mid-October to transport visitors to within 500 yards of the gorge entrance for a short 1/2 mile walk that takes in the most spectacular aspects of this attraction. A free 15 minute movie at the Information Cen-ter provides a fine introduction to Franconia Notch State Park and the Flume Gorge. Area information center, rest rooms, cafeteria, gift shop and interpretive exhibits are all available at the Visitor Center. Franconia Notch was the home of the famous Old Man of the Mountain, the same "Great Stone Face" immortalized by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Daniel Webster.

MT. WASHINGTON Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeastern U.S., attains an elevation of 6,288 feet above mean sea level, located at the heart of the White Mountain National Forest. Originally called Agiocochook by native Americans, the mountain boasts some of the planet's most se-vere weather, and retains the world record for wind speed, 231 MPH. The 52-acre Mount Washington State Park surrounds the summit, where visitors will find a multi-tude of old and modern buildings, once known as the 'City Among the Clouds'. LL BEAN FACTORY STORE L.L.Bean was founded in 1912 by avid hunter and fisherman Leon Leonwood Bean who had developed a waterproof boot he was selling to hunters. By 1912 he was selling the "Bean boot," or Maine Hunting Shoe, through a four-page mail-order catalog and the boot remains a staple of the company's outdoorsy image. This is LL Bean’s headquarters, and the store is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There is no lock on the front door!

PORTLAND HEAD LIGHT Historian Edward Rowe Snow wrote, "Portland Head and its light seem to sym-bolize the state of Maine -- rocky coast, breaking waves, sparkling water and clear, pure salt air." The 350,000 to 400,000 people who visit this site each year would agree; Portland Head is one of the most spectacularly beautiful light-house sites in New England, and the most photographed.

OGUNQUIT, MAINE Once we arrive for our stay at the Anchorage By the Sea Resort in beautiful Ogunquit, eve-rything is just steps away. Ogunquit Beach is three miles of white sand and natural dunes.

You may want to enjoy a leisurely stroll along Ogunquit's famed Marginal Way. Accessible at the edge of the property, Marginal Way follows the rugged coast into picturesque Perkins Cove, Ogunquit's quaint fishing village which is spanned by a charming footbridge-drawbridge at its mouth. OLD NORTH CHURCH The enduring fame of Old North Church and its sure place in America's story derives from a fleeting moment on the night of April 18, 1775. It was then that the sexton, Robert Newman, climbed the stee-ple, and briefly hung the two lanterns which touched off the War for Independence. The lanterns, arranged for by Paul Revere, signaled the movement of Regulars up the Charles River to Cambridge to begin a march to Lexington and seize a cache of Colonial military stores. As the sig-nal was given, Revere was being rowed with muffled oars to the Charlestown shore; his subsequent dash on horseback, immortalized by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Paul Reveres Ride, brought out the militia and the shot heard round the world was fired on Lexington Green the following day.

HARVARD CAMPUS Harvard College was established in 1636 by vote of the Great and General Court of Massachusetts Bay Colony, and was named for its first benefactor, John Harvard of Charlestown, a young minister who upon his death in 1638, left his library and half his estate to the new institution.

CHEERS BAR Founded in 1969 as the Bull & Finch Pub, the original inspiration for the setting of the TV show Cheers, was a favorite neighborhood bar. In fact, the year that the Cheers show premiered on television (1982) Boston Magazine chose the Bull & Finch Pub as the “Best Neighborhood Bar” in Boston.

PLYMOUTH Plymouth is a town in southeastern Massachu-setts, on Plymouth Bay, 34 miles southeast of Bos-ton. The seat of Plymouth County, it was the site of the first permanent European settlement in New England. Plymouth is now a fishing and tourist center with ship-related industries and cranberry-packing houses. Plymouth Rock, a tourist attrac-tion, is on the shore under a granite canopy; rec-reations of Plymouth Plantation and the Mayflower are also there. The pilgrims founded Plymouth on

Dec. 21, 1620. When we leave Plymouth, we usu-ally get to see a cranberry bog.

MARTHA’S VINEYARD

Seven miles off Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard is a kaleido-scope of candy-colored gingerbread houses, pristine beaches, unique shops and stately white mansions. Today we will put “us and the bus” on a ferry to cross to the “Vineyard”. Our tour with a local guide will take us around the island. It includes a stop at Aquinnah (Gay Head) to see its multicol-ored cliffs, its 200-year-old lighthouse, and its Native Ameri-can stores. It also offers a guided walk through the camp-grounds in Oak Bluffs to visit its wonderful gingerbread, Vic-torian cottages. About half way through the tour, we make a stop in Edgartown, which was founded in 1642. This stop gives us time for lunch, shopping, and a chance to explore the oldest town on the Island, which was the center of the Vineyard whaling industry.

Newport, RI is our morning destination to immerse ourselves in a world of wealth and power, as it existed at the dawn of the 20th century. Discover the Gilded Age Experience in the grand villas of the powerful men and influential women who made Newport America's leading resort and a center of the arts and architecture. We tour the Breakers Mansion, the grand 70 room Italian Ren-aissance-style villa built by Cornelius Vanderbilt II, President and Chairman of the New York Central Railroad, after his first house burned down. This man is a brother to the Vanderbilt that owned the Biltmore Estate in Ashville, NC. The Breakers Mansion is the “Big House” to see in the northeast! Enjoy fantastic Ocean Drive, going by Jackie Kennedy’s childhood home, “Hammersmith Farms.”

Late afternoon we arrive at Foxwood Resort Casino, where action, fun, and excitement come in groups. With five casinos featuring over 5,800 slots and 350 tables, over 1,400 luxurious rooms and deluxe suites, 24 restaurants, 17 specialty shops, headline entertainment throughout the year, and nearby golf course, it's easy to see why having fun is not hard to do. This is the largest casino in the world and is only 100 miles from New York City. We eat our dinner here before returning to our hotel which is located right on the Foxwood Casinos property.

YALE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS – NEW HAVEN Yale’s roots can be traced back to the 1640s, when colonial clergymen led an effort to establish a college in New Haven to preserve the tradition of European liberal education in the New World. This vision was fulfilled in 1701, when the charter was granted for a school “wherein Youth may be instructed in the Arts and Sciences [and] through the blessing of Almighty God may be fitted for Public employment both in Church and Civil State.” In 1718 the school was renamed “Yale College” in grati-tude to the Welsh merchant Elihu Yale, who had donated the proceeds from the sale of nine bales of goods together with 417 books and a portrait of King George I.

Gettysburg, PA –

Located 50 miles northwest of Bal-timore, the small town of Gettys-burg, Pennsylvania was the site of the largest Civil War battle ever waged in the Western Hemisphere. The Battle of Gettysburg opened on July 1, 1863 and closed two days later with the climactic "Pickett's Charge". It resulted in a

Union victory for the Army of the Poto-mac and success-fully turned back the second invasion of the North by General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Over 51,000 soldiers were

killed, wounded or captured mak-ing it the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. It was also a major turn-ing point in the war. Historians have referred to the Bat-tle of Gettysburg as the "High Wa-ter Mark of the Confederacy." It was the last major effort by Lee to take the fighting out of Virginia and into north-

ern states. The Soldiers' National Cemetery at Gettysburg contains more than 7,000 interments includ-ing over 3,500 from the Civil War. It was here that President Abraham Lincoln delivered his immortal Get-tysburg Address on November 19,1863.

After our stop at Gettysburg, we will head south on 15 and west on I-70 to Hagerstown and south on I-81 across West Virginia through the Shenandoah Valley, and skirt the Blue Ridge Mountains to Staunton, VA for the night.

Shenandoah Valley Made famous by the song and movie of the same name, Shenan-doah is an Indian word meaning "Daughter of the Stars". The Shenandoah Valley of Virginia is ideal for a weekend of colorful leaf peeping. Usually about mid-October the mountains begin to shimmer with the reds and yellows of the maple, oak, hickory and dogwood trees. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs from North Carolina to Waynesboro, Virginia, where it becomes the Skyline Drive. The Skyline Drive runs for 105 miles through the Shenandoah National Park, and terminates in Front Royal. This stretch of highway is one of the nations most beautiful and intriguing stretches of road. The entire drive is dotted with beautiful overlooks and spectacular views. We don’t do the skyline drive because it is too time consum-ing, but drive the valley below it. We have a rest stop at Flying J truck stop and good luck getting Cindy back on the bus in time – we have to get her away from the “quarter machines!”

Crossing the New River Gorge Bridge near Beck-ley, West Virginia For years crossing the New River gorge meant long de-tours, or carefully winding your way down narrow mountain roads. It was not until the completion of the New River Gorge Bridge on October 22, 1977, that this travel problem was solved. However, the solution was not an easy one. Many technical problems had to be overcome. The bridge reduced a 40-minute drive down narrow mountain roads and across one of America's oldest rivers to less than one minute. The World's Largest Equine Museum at Church Hill Downs in Louisville, KY The Kentucky Derby Museum is a premier tourist attrac-tion, featuring an award winning, high definition Kentucky

Derby film entitled "The Greatest Race". Dis-played on a 360-degree screen, "The Greatest Race" places the viewer in the center of Derby Day action. We will take a guided walking tour of Churchill Downs and the Museum's paddock area (weather permitting). The actual Finish Line pole used at Churchill Down for many years, as well as the grave sites of three famous Kentucky Derby winners, Carry Back (1961), Swaps (1955) and Brokers Tip (1933) are located outside on the museum grounds. The gift shop features Derby and Thoroughbred memorabilia and historical books.
