The Role of Religion in Settling the New England Colonies

• What role did religion play?– Puritans vs. Separatists– Why wasn’t the move to Holland enough?

• The Great Migration

• The Puritans – from persecuted to persecuting– Lack of toleration leads to creation of new colonies.

• Puritan Government– John Winthrop and the General Court (stockholders)– 1634 – settlers’ demand increased role leads to

elected assembly

• 1636 – Thomas Hooker leads his congregation to settle Hartford– 3 years later – Connecticut Colony founded– Fundamental Orders of Connecticut – why is this

important?

• Roger Williams – banished 1635, charter 1644– Advocated religious toleration– Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

• Founded on religious freedom

• John Wheelwright – followed Williams’ example – 1638 leads a group north

• 1679 – New Hampshire becomes independent of Massachusetts

With growth comes new problems

• As settlers expand onto Native American lands, their trading partners become their enemies.

• 1636 – Fight between Massachusetts and the Pequot ends in the killing of hundreds of Pequot.

• 1675 – New England vs. Wampanoag– King Philip’s War (Metacomet)– Though 100s of New Englanders are killed, the war

ends in Wampanoag defeat.
