Plymouth and the Pilgrims

• Church of England – started because King Henry VIII wanted a divorce, all people in Eng. had to join and accept his ideas– Separatists/Pilgrims- wanted to separate from Church of

England• Holland (1608)- Pilgrims moved for religious freedom• Mayflower (1620)- boat to colonies, 65 days at sea

– Plymouth (squatters) meant to land in VA, landed in New England (No charter, Ply. Joins Mass. Bay Col)

Massachusetts Bay Colony- largest colony in New Eng

• Puritans- want to fix Ch.ofEng., persecuted by King, very strict interpretation of God

• Predestination- God has already decided your salvation when you are born

– Great Migration- removal of Puritans from Eng to New World, looking for religious freedom

– John Winthrop- 1st Governor of Mass, believed purpose of Gov. to enforce God’s laws

• Why would the Puritans support a Gov. that was based on God’s laws?

• City on a Hill- create a model society that will be copied around world

• *How is “City on a Hill” seen in the US beliefs today?

• Rhode Island– Roger Williams- founder, complete religious freedom– “Sewer of New England”- looked down on by Mass.– *Was it fair for Massachusetts to mock RI freedoms?

• Connecticut- only good farming land in New Eng.– Thomas Hooker- founder, Puritian– Fundamental Orders- rule by “Substantial Citizens”– *How is New England showing aspects of democratic ideas

seen in US today?

Early Colonial Unity- each colony completely isolated and separate, ran and protected

themselves

• New England Confederation (1643)- 1st colonial unity for protection from Indians (RI left out)

• Dominion of New England- imposed by England to cut down on smugling (sugar for making alcohol)

• *What are some factors that would prevent the colonies from thinking they were united?

• What factors allowed the New England colonies to accept some form of unity?

Salem Witch Trials (1690s)

• Congregational Church/ Freemen- more people moving to N Eng that are not Puritans– Halfway Covenant- tried to extend church influence by

allowing more to vote by being partial members• More people allowed to participate in church than before

(new people w different ideas)– “Witch Hunt” -20 women executed for being witches

(How many were guilty?)• Showed division between the rich and the poor• Identify examples of people who are targeted for being successful

today
