New England Colonies• Objective-Students will
identify why colonists moved to New England and the beliefs they established that impact American society today
• Puritans and Separatists• Predestination• Great Migration• John Winthrop (idea on Gov.)• City on a Hill• Anne Hutchinson• Roger Williams• Fundamental Orders• Confederation and Dominion of
New England
Plymouth and the Pilgrims
• Church of England – started because King Henry VIII wanted a divorce, all people in Eng. had to join and accept his ideas– Separatists/Pilgrims- wanted to separate from Church of
England• Holland (1608)- Pilgrims moved for religious freedom• Mayflower (1620)- boat to colonies, 65 days at sea
– Plymouth (squatters) meant to land in VA, landed in New England (No charter, Ply. Joins Mass. Bay Col)
» Imagine if Pilgrims had landed in Jamestown?
Massachusetts Bay Colony- largest colony in New Eng
• Puritans- want to fix Ch.ofEng., persecuted by King, very strict interpretation of God
• Predestination- God has already decided your salvation when you are born
– Great Migration- removal of Puritans from Eng to New World, looking for religious freedom
– John Winthrop- 1st Governor of Mass, believed purpose of Gov. to enforce God’s laws
• Why would the Puritans support a Gov. that was based on God’s laws?
• City on a Hill- create a model society that will be copied around world
• *How is “City on a Hill” seen in the US beliefs today?
– Government- Winthrop hated Democracy but allowed for some• Freemen- only Church going males could vote• 2/5’s suffrage- more than England• *Should people be restricted from voting? Why only church
members?– Dissenters- people that disagreed with Mass. Gov.
• What do you feel is wrong with the way Government is being ran in Mass? Does this reflect US Government today? Explain
• Anne Hutchinson- felt no reason to follow God’s laws based on Predestination (Why?)
• Roger Williams- felt that Gov should not be based on God’s laws
Other New England Colonies
• Rhode Island– Roger Williams- founder, complete religious freedom– “Sewer of New England”- looked down on by Mass.– *Was it fair for Massachusetts to mock RI freedoms?
• Connecticut- only good farming land in New Eng.– Thomas Hooker- founder, Puritian– Fundamental Orders- rule by “Substantial Citizens”– *How is New England showing aspects of democratic ideas
seen in US today?
Early Colonial Unity- each colony completely isolated and separate, ran and protected
themselves
• New England Confederation (1643)- 1st colonial unity for protection from Indians (RI left out)
• Dominion of New England- imposed by England to cut down on smugling (sugar for making alcohol)
• *What are some factors that would prevent the colonies from thinking they were united?
• What factors allowed the New England colonies to accept some form of unity?
Salem Witch Trials (1690s)
• Congregational Church/ Freemen- more people moving to N Eng that are not Puritans– Halfway Covenant- tried to extend church influence by
allowing more to vote by being partial members• More people allowed to participate in church than before
(new people w different ideas)– “Witch Hunt” -20 women executed for being witches
(How many were guilty?)• Showed division between the rich and the poor• Identify examples of people who are targeted for being successful
today
