Sandy Eneguess of Sandy Eneguess Tractor Service LLC knows two things very well: construction and skiing. So when he was given the opportunity to renovate the commu- nity ski area at Proctor Academy, an Andover, N.H., board- ing school, he jumped at the chance. The Peterborough, N.H., native has owned and operated a contracting business specializing in recreation facility and residential construction since 1977. On the side, he serves as the Proctor Academy head women’s ski coach. With an extensive amount of knowledge and experience in both fields, along with the assistance of two Hyundai excavators, he knew he could get the job done quickly and efficiently. Beginning in the fall of 2012, Eneguess began work on the project. His main task was to transform one of the school’s existing ski slopes into an International Ski Federation (FIS) homologated men’s and women’s ski racing hill in order to host high-caliber races. In the first step of the renovation, Eneguess relied on his Hyundai R210LC-9 excavator to widen the old trail to the 120 ft. (36.5 m) required by the FIS. Despite heavy rains that have washed out some Vermont roads this summer, a new federal report said Vermont has shown “significant improvement” in high- way conditions. The state has risen from 42nd to 28th in the country in the Reason Foundation's analyisis based on 2009 data. The Legislature passed a fuel-tax increase in 2009 to go toward a new bonding program to provide more money for bridge maintenance. The state also repaved interstate 89 between Richmond and Georgia that year, winning it a top ranking for “urban interstate pavement condition” from the Reason Foundation. “I’m happy with the jump, but it is still in the bottom half,” Rep. Patrick Brennan, R-Colchester told the Burlington Free Press. “Unless we stay on top of things, we are going to slip back.” The administration of Gov. Peter Shumlin and the Legislature this year agreed to raise the fuel taxes again to help fund the state’s growing list of transportation projects. “What we saw in the Legislature was just a major level of support to continue the momentum to make the system better,” said Transportation Secretary Brian Searles. Road construction projects are everywhere across the state as the state works to reduce the percentage of roads and bridges deemed in poor condition. The funding from the 2-percent rise in the gas tax in May and the 2-cent diesel tax hike will allow the state to do more work as it weans itself from the $185 million it received in stimulus funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. In 2007, 20 percent of Vermont’s bridges were deemed structurally deficient. In 2012, the percentage decreased to 9.3 percent, said Deputy Transportation Secretary Sue Minter. In 2009, 34 percent of state highways were rated in “very poor condition.” The percentage dropped to 24 per- cent or about 800 mi. in 2012, Minter said. Working on such a steep slope, Eneguess had to use extremecaution and build ledges into the hill, giving the excavator aflat surface to work on. He then utilized the machine’s buck-et to clear away multiple feet of trees, brush and rocks onboth sides, down the entire length of the trail. Once widenedto the proper size, Eneguess used the R210LC-9’s bucket tocontour the slope into a smooth flowing ski trail with naturalturns and rolls.

“Clearing heavy material on a steep slope would havebeen a difficult task for any machine,” said Eneguess, ownerand operator of Sandy Eneguess Tractor Service LLC. “Butthe R210LC-9 Hyundai excavator delivered an enormousamount of power and handled the conditions well.”

Enabling Eneguess’s safe and efficient operation,Hyundai’s R210LC-9 features a 143 hp (106.6 kW), Tier III,6-cylinder, turbo-charged Cummins QSB6.7 engine built formaximum power, reliability and performance. The machinehas an operating weight of 50,520 lbs. (22,915 kg), a maxi-mum digging depth of 22 ft. 1 in. (6.7 m) and a bucket break-out force of 29,320 lbs.

In the next phase of the trail building process, Eneguesssolely utilized his Hyundai R60CR-9 mini-excavator. Oncethe trail had been widened with the larger excavator,Eneguess turned to his smaller, more compact machine to re-contour the trail. The machine’s light weight combined withits hydraulic tilt grade bucket made it the ideal fit for the job, delivering minimal damage to the trail while maneuveringdelicately down the slope, contouring it in the process.

Once the ski trail met the appropriate standards, Eneguess

was responsible for installing the lighting. For this task,Eneguess again used his R60CR-9 mini-excavator. Startingfrom the bottom and working his way up, Eneguess exca-vated 4 to 6 ft. (1.2 to 1.8 m) deep holes for each of the 27

electrical poles needed to light the trail. Each pole was setand stabilized in the ground while Eneguess installed thecable. Once complete, the Hyundai machine was used toback fill each area.

With the trail built and ready for the coming winter’s raceseason, the only task Eneguess had remaining was on-goingmaintenance. Throughout the fall, Eneguess used hisHyundai R60CR-9 mini-excavator, custom fit with a mowerattachment, to trim the vegetation along the sides of the trail, keeping the trail clear and ready for snowfall.

Hyundai R210LC-9 Excavator Performson Challenging Steep N.H. Ski Slope“We work in many more applications than the average

contractor so our equipment must be adaptable,” saidEneguess. “Having the R60CR-9 mini-excavator has been ahuge advantage; it is easily one of the most versatilemachines I’ve owned.”Providing Eneguess with compact size, yet substantial

power, Hyundai’s R60CR-9 mini-excavator is equipped witha 55.2 hp (41 kW), fuel efficient, Tier IV certified, Yanmar4TNV98 engine. The machine has an operating weight of12,790 lbs. (5,801 kg), a maximum digging depth of 11 ft. 9in. (3.6 m) and a bucket breakout force of 9,190 lbs.Having used the two Hyundai machines for multiple tasks

throughout the project, Eneguess has become quiteimpressed with the features Hyundai has to offer. Accordingto Eneguess, the machines not only provide optimum powerand performance for the majority of his work, but also anarray of features making operation efficient and comfortable. Both excavators are ergonomically designed with spaciouscabs, large windows and excellent visibility, having an idealconfiguration of control devices, all of which Eneguess findsto be sufficiently more practical than many of his previousmachines. While features and productivity are important to

Eneguess, machine uptime has always been his highest pri-ority. To help keep his Hyundai excavators up and running,

Eneguess relies heavily on his Hyundai salesman, FlipHenry of Chappell Tractor in Milford and Brentwood, N.H.A long time customer, since the 70’s, Eneguess is friendlywith Henry and the entire staff at Chappell Tractor and truststhem to provide prompt service and parts availability when-ever the need arises.“If one of my machines break, needs a new part or just

some regular maintenance, Flip will show up on my job sitewith a loaner machine ready for me to use in the interim,”said Eneguess. “Having a great relationship with such a reli-able dealership has been an asset to my business.”According to Eneguess, he is already eyeing up his next

Hyundai equipment purchase and with the assistance of FlipHenry and Chappell Tractor, he is certain it will be anothersuccessful addition.Sandy Eneguess Tractor Service LLC is a full-service

Proposed East-West HighwayTouted as Economic BoostDOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine (AP) One

of the top supporters of a proposed east-westhighway that would connect two Canadianprovinces through Maine told a skepticalcrowd the project would provide an eco-nomic boost for communities along its routeand no land would be taken by eminentdomain. Peter Vigue, chairman and CEO of con-

struction company Cianbro Corp., toldabout 700 people at a public meeting May31 at Foxcroft Academy that the 220-mi.(354 km) toll road would revive strugglingcommunities in rural Maine. Another 150

people opposed to the project demonstratedoutside. Many members of the crowd were open-

ly hostile, often interrupting Vigue andquestioning the economic impact of thehighway. Some wondered about the envi-ronmental costs. The proposed highway would run from

Calais in the east to Coburn Gore at the bor-der with Quebec.

Duffy Sells Monster Trailer With Alex Lyon & SonBy Jay Adams CEG CORRESPONDENT

When Bill Duffy had to sell a monster trailer that hadbeen sitting for three years, he turned to his many yearsof experience and modern methods to help him. The nolonger manufactured 34-year-old behemoth, was mar-keted to domestic and international clients using themost modern tools of the Internet age.Duffy of Winchester, Mass., is the president of

Contractors Equipment Service Corp. of Billerica. Thecompany repairs, sells, rents and appraises all kinds ofconstruction and transportation machinery. Duffy hasbeen a salesman and manager in this heavy iron rentaland leasing field since 1990.Duffy facilitates sales exchanges. His experience as

equipment manager and vice president of Bank of NewEngland Group of Boston for five years was invaluablefor equipment recovery and sales. In fact, his experi-ence leasing, selling and lending money for construc-tion equipment goes back to 1974. He has appraisedconstruction machinery, mining equipment and otherlarge iron for banks since 1970 and sold machinery forother companies since 1965.Duffy drew on all that experience when the

Shaughnessy Company of South Boston approachedhim through his affiliation with the Alex Lyon & SonAuctioneers last year to help them sell a transportationtrailer. The trailer is so massive that only a few compa-nies in the world might have use for it. ShaughnessyCo. had been trying to sell the trailer for about threeyears, with no luck according to Duffy. The Talbert 450-ton (408 t) trailer in question once

moved small forests by itself. Shaughnessy Companypurchased the trailer in 1989 brand new for more than$1 million. It is 83 ft. (25.3m) long and has a hauling orload capacity of its advertised 450 tons. The trailer along with the additional attachments of the gooseneck, draw bar and header cost approximately

$500,000 exclusive of the transportation and tax according to Duffy.

The trailer has 12 axles, there are eight Michelin tires on each axle, and each axle has independent steering and braking.

Marketing Efforts Create Global Buzz for Huge TrailerThe trailer has 12 axles with eight

Michelin tires on each axle. “Each axle has independent steering and

braking. It is towed by one tractor andpushed or braked by a second depending onthe application and job requirements,” saidDuffy. “There were two Prime Movers, ortruck tractors, each with 70,000-pound frontends and one having a 90,000-pound rearend, and the second with a 125,000-poundrear end which was the primary tow vehi-cle.”

The trailer — along with the additionalattachments of the gooseneck, draw bar andheader —cost approximately $500,000,exclusive of the transportation and taxaccording to Duffy. The two prime moverswere purchased used; one coming fromCanada, and the second also from outside ofthe United States. The movers were used inheavy logging applications according toDuffy. The tractors were manufactured in1974 and 1975.“This equipment was used by the

Shaughnessy Company in the moving andrigging of transformers for the power com-panies across the New England area,” saidDuffy. “The cost of moving these transform-

ers became very expensive and the powercompanies changed (over) to much smallertransformers, which were easier to move andto install.”Though municipalities, utilities and pri-

vate contractors have all shifted to moremaneuverable transportation, Duffy saidoverseas markets remain viable as potentialbuyers.“There still remains a very active foreign

and domestic market in off-road applica-tions, such as oil field and heavy construc-tion,” said Duffy. “Despite this customerbase, the huge trailer, well, simply didn’tmove. A strong effort was made by theShaughnessy Company to sell this equip-ment (domestically and internationally) overa three-year period, but to no avail,”“I have had a relationship with Jack Lyon

and the Lyon Auction Company from theearly 1990s, up to this present time, derivinglenders and lessors in the liquidation of theirassets with many years of experience, maxi-mizing their returns,” said Duffy. “I havemaintained a large equipment storage facili-ty in Billerica Massachusetts, to also assistcontractors in staging their equipment forinternet sale at a Lyon auction. TheShaughnessy equipment remained at theirlocation at 346 D Street in South Boston,

where it was staged for showing and photo-graphic exposure.”After nearly three years of the stalled trail-

er sale, Jack Shaughnessy, Sr. contactedDuffy in mid-November of 2012 and author-ized him to market the trailer through AlexLyon & Son.“The initial work was to gather all of the

records, specifications, maintenance recordsand work history for the equipment, thenwrite an accurate description for advertisingin hard copy and on the Internet,” said Duffy.“This copy would then be finalized by theLyons Auction people. This effort tookapproximately one month, which then putme into mid-December and the advertisinghad just about started to hit the market andthe Internet with me as the contact person forLyon Auction.”Worldwide exposure, via the Web and

Alex Lyon & Son Auction CompanyInternational, combined with local exposureto the Shaughnessy equipment in SouthBoston, cemented the sale in the next fewmonths.“Many of the interested parties came from

Australia, South and Central America andPuerto Rico, beyond the U.S.,” said Duffy. “Ialso had an inquiry from an oil field contrac-tor, who, believe it or not, owned eight of

these trailers.”Duffy’s next effort was to procure quotes

for trucking to the Ports of New Jersey andBaltimore. Many potential foreign buyerscame to inspect the equipment in SouthBoston, and then flew to Kissimmee, Fla., tobe physically present at the auction site thattook place in February.Bids were taken, and a high bidder from

Puerto Rico bought the Shaughnessy trailerand related equipment for $405,000 afterbids were taken both online and at theKissimmee site.Duffy remained involved in the load out,

work with the customer and disassembly bythe Shaughnessy Crane Co. and their riggingcrews. “The complete process was very success-

ful and is a great credit to the Lyon AuctionCompany and the use of the Internet and allof the assistance from the ShaughnessyCompany,” said Duffy. “I was very pleased, because the response was overwhelming;both national as well as international.”
