What is Title IX?

• The purpose of Title IX is to end discrimination on the basis of sex in education and applies to all programs and activities that receive federal funding.
• Title IX encompasses many forms of sex-based discrimination, including, but not limited to addressing sexual misconduct (including sexual harassment), sexual violence (including sexual assault and domestic/dating/intimate partner violence), and stalking.
• Title IX applies on and off campus. Anything that can affect the educational environment.

Never forget the person • It is critical that you listen, are
present, avoid judgment, and do not blame the person for what happened.
• If the person prefers no action be taken at that time, they should be informed that this will also be shared with the Title IX Coordinator, but cannot be guaranteed.

Never forget the person • The Title IX Office will reach out and
make sure the person has information about resources, accommodations, an understanding of the process if they did move forward, and confirm their choice of action.

Emotions• The person may feel a variety
of confusing emotions such as panic, helplessness, guilt, shame, numbness, or denial.
• A flat of emotionless display after an incident of sexual misconduct strike many as being an inappropriate response. It is not.
