DEAR EDUCATOR,

At Pearson, we have an abiding belief in the importance of teachers and their power to illuminate the minds of young children and those who are learning to teach. In these current times of significant change in educating students who serve children and families, and in publishing, we remain committed to working with you, your students, and the field to provide effective resources.

Our new list of Early Childhood materials offers innovative solutions that ground understanding of development, early learning and effective practices in the most contemporary perspectives of the field. For example, Sue Bredekamp’s extensively revised Effective Practices in Early Childhood Education, Second Edition, is a worthwhile contribution to your students’ knowledge and skill base not only for its many intentional and effective strategies for working with young children, but also because it moves the field forward. In the revision of Sorte’s Nutrition, Health and Safety: Promoting Wellness, the authors present profiles of “Progressive Programs and Practices” that contemporary programs across the country have implemented to make programs safe, fight obesity and care for individual children’s health needs. You will find in all the materials here a persistent, intentional focus on application, underscored by research, from valued authors.

Inside this year’s catalog are some of the market-leading resources that you already trust, as well as some new ones. Many of these resources have been enhanced to take advantage of digital platforms. For example, if your students use the Pearson eText version of 8 new editions, available for 7 courses, they will find embedded videos they can link to directly from their screen. Along with content enhancements, these eTexts provide students with all the features you would expect to find in an eText—electronic note taking and highlighting, navigation and search. One last feature that we know your students will appreciate and value: significant saving over the purchase of a print book. Introduction to Early Childhood Education

Effective Practices in Early Childhood Education Plus MyEducationLab with Video-Enhanced Pearson eText, 2/eBredekamp

ISBN: 9780133386356 • ©2014 • 576 pp.

Written by one of the foremost experts in the field, this essential text provides the building blocks for understanding effective practices in early childhood education with a solid framework for Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP), preparing and empowering students to become the type of teachers that enhance young children’s learning and development positively and effectively.

Birth to Age Eight. Early childhood educators join the profession and remain in the role because they believe that their work can and will make a difference in children’s lives and education. To prepare them, Sue Bredekamp has written the book that she wishes she had when she was learning about young children. By building on the basic framework of Developmentally Appropriate Practice, covered in an entire chapter, the text goes beyond it by weaving in three core themes: intentional teaching, challenging and interesting curriculum, and evidence-based, effective practices for a new generation of early childhood educators. The text covers the necessary content required in an introductory course, including unique chapters not typically found, such as one on DAP and one on effective teaching practices—plus four chapters focused on content areas. The chapter sequence is organized according to NAEYC’s guidelines for Developmentally Appropriate Practice, to which the author has expertly contributed for over 30 years. The overall organization provides a conceptual framework on which later learning can be built, one that is applicable across the diverse settings in which early education occurs—child care centers and homes, preschools, kindergarten, and primary grades.

New to this edition:

• Developmental trajectories • A completely revised Assessment chapter, with more on observation and recording tools• End-of-chapter review and application items, many involving children’s artifacts

Introduction to Early Childhood Education

Fundamentals of Early Childhood Education Plus MyEducationLab with Video-Enhanced Pearson eText, 7/eMorrison

ISBN: 9780133400830 • ©2014 • 432 pp.

This best-selling practical, brief text with its applied approach is based on current research and thinking about how young children learn, and provides concrete examples for how best to teach children from birth to age eight.

Birth to Age Eight. George Morrison’s trademark friendly and accessible writing style is what sets this text apart from all others on the market. Not only is it a pleasure to read, but the streamlined presentation and only 13 chapters make it an excellent alternative to Morrison’s full edition (Early Childhood Education Today). User-friendly, contemporary, and comprehensive, this fundamental resource shows how to apply childhood theories directly to practice, offering concrete concepts and appropriate practices applicable to real classrooms and teaching young children in today’s educational world. Now with embedded videos in the Pearson eText, this edition brings early childhood settings right into the college course, showing students how children develop and learn (in chapters devoted to ages and grades) and how teachers implement evidence-based practices.

The Whole Child: Developmental Education for the Early Years, 10/eWeissman / Hendrick

ISBN: 9780132853422 • ©2014 • 496 pp.

A classic in the field, this practical methods text provides a complete developmental approach to early childhood education giving teachers the specific skills they need to teach the whole child-—emotionally, socially, physically, creatively, and cognitively.

Written in a warm, engaging style, the authors present foundational information about the field and working with children from birth to age eight, as well as a strong rationale for teaching the whole child, focusing on the five developmental “selves” of children. The text’s developmental domain chapters begin with discussions of physical and emotional health, proposing that they are fundamental to the well-being of children. Discussions also place children in the context of contemporary family life and the multicultural world today. Throughout, the authors clearly provide practical guidelines, methods, and materials that address the entire individual, not just curriculum topics. Further, in this day and age of teaching mandates and standardized testing, the authors address how to meet school standards while remaining true to Developmentally Appropriate Practice. With an emphasis on emergent curriculum, intentional teaching, and the Reggio Emilia approach, students learn about “best practices” in a way that is accessible and encouraging to the novice teacher. The Whole Child is a sensible methods book that explains how to teach young children in ways that foster healthy development, emphasizing all aspects of the child and what he or she needs from the learning environment in order to thrive.

Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum in ActionKostelnik / Rupiper / Soderman / Whiren

ISBN: 9780137058075 • ©2014 • 352 pp.

As a practical and highly visual overview of all the components necessary to be an effective early childhood teacher, this concise new text is perfect for community college courses and is keenly focused on application and skill-building, utilizing several areas of child development—aesthetic, affective, cognitive, language, physical, and social—as the basis for curriculum planning.

Neither a subject-based nor a materials-based curriculum, this applied text instead promotes several areas of child development and incorporates subject matter areas–art, math, literacy, and science–into the developmental domains. The authors present six activity types (exploratory play, guided discovery, problem-solving, discussions, demonstrations, and direct instruction) in every domain. Furthermore, they provide long-form lesson plans and short-form plans that illustrate these activity types in all of the curriculum chapters. Closely aligned to the current Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) guidelines, the text effectively prepares pre-service teachers for the demands of the classroom as well as for the Praxis II exam, if it is required in their state.

Promoting the teacher as an active participant in education is another important characteristic of the text, with a detailed discussion of the importance of being intentional in one’s teaching and what this looks like in a classroom environment. The authors support this ideology by explaining and showing how a teacher becomes more active—one ready to make continual judgments about what to plan, how to build on children’s interests and knowledge, and how to interact with children to scaffold their learning. Strongly methods-based in its approach, the text also imparts the “how to” of teaching, with a multitude of examples of what is appropriate to teach children ages three to six.

Guidance

Constructive Guidance and Discipline: Birth to Age Eight, 6/eFields / Meritt / Fields

ISBN: 9780132853323 • ©2014 • 432 pp.

One of the most respected texts in the field, Constructive Guidance and Discipline: Birth to Age Eight, 6/e, more clearly links guidance techniques to the causes of behavior than any other text on the market.

Continuing its quest to provide information about helping children become confident, caring, responsible, and productive people, the recommendations in the text about guidance approaches are based on the sound research of Jean Piaget, Alfred Adler, and Carl Roger. The authors emphasize understanding the uniqueness of each child, including how individual temperaments and experiences affect behavior. The book’s approach recommends treating the cause of behavior problems rather than just the symptoms to obtain lasting results, and continually presents clear discussions of child development and developmentally appropriate practices as they relate to the causes of children’s behavior. Providing a unified theory base for analyzing guidance and discipline, the text offers a consistent view of external versus internal motivation, explaining why rewards are as damaging as punishment, and why evaluative praise undermines children’s learning as well as their self-confidence. With a strong emphasis on developmental theory and constructivism, this new edition broadens coverage with new examples relevant to children birth through age eight. The text explains underlying causes for child behavior, weaves numerous preschool and primary classroom examples throughout, contains new Reflection questions to ponder and/or discuss, and includes extensive information on guiding children with special needs.

Guiding Children’s Social and Emotional Development: A Reflective ApproachKatz

ISBN: 9780137070886 • ©2014 • 240 pp.

The accessible language and focus of this engaging new brief book includes readable research implications, scenarios/examples, and pedagogy that support an intentional, reflective approach to guiding children’s social and emotional development.

The author writes from her unique perspective as a practicing clinical child psychologist and daily provider at a high-quality early care and education center. She synthesizes and offers the best ideas from recent child development research and practice recommendations from the mental health field and model early childhood programs. Self-reflection is emphasized throughout, showing readers, as they build confidence, how to use the concepts and strategies in their own professional practice when working with young children. Every chapter introduces information that helps readers to better understand children’s developing emotions and behavior and works to challenge readers to tap into personal feelings, thoughts, and experiences. The text provides concise and practical overviews of the key theories and research on social and emotional development, clear examples illustrating children and teachers in early childhood settings using effective and not-so-effective guidance strategies, and the tools necessary for understanding and responding effectively to what has become known as “challenging behavior.”

As James Elicker, Ph.D. of Purdue University so eloquently states in the Foreword of this text, “…Katz helps us in insightful and practical ways to sharpen our capacity to empathetically understand each child as a unique individual who is striving to have a sense of power in her own life and to be connected in loving and meaningful ways with others. Is there a more important goal in early care and education than helping young children find this balance of competence and connectedness?”

Observation

Observing Development of the Young Child, 8/eBeaty

ISBN: 9780132867566 • ©2014 • 384 pp.

Used successfully in early childhood programs all over the country since its inception, this unique and mainstay text looks at children’s development in every domain, preparing students to become skilled observers, with concrete detail about how to record what is observed, how to interpret the data, and how to become adept at using the observations to plan for learning.

The new edition of Jan Beaty’s best-selling book has undergone an extensive revision. The book’s original features and organization remain, while new research, issues, and more extensive coverage of observation is included in this edition. Chapters 1 and 2 were reorganized and expanded to include the basics of observation. The text itself has become more streamlined, more reader-friendly, with fewer chapters (12 instead of 14), yet with many more boxed ideas. Other examples of observation tools that have been added include running records, rubrics, rating scales, portfolios, documentation panels, and other forms of visual documentation. Strategies for working with dual language learners are included throughout the book. The reorganization and restructuring of the text improves on its past success; the simplification and improvements will appeal to students and instructors alike. What emerges is the most current observation text on the market, modernized to reach today’s population of early childhood education students.

In this text, readers learn to facilitate professional development by focusing on observed strengths through mentoring and coaching relationships that allow for safe conversations about what is happening, how it is affecting children, and how to investigate and try out needed changes. Included are ideas for supporting playful, inquiry-based learning and fostering the ability to explain and document why it is effective, using a process of mentoring for inquiry, reflection, and leadership.
