PAVER PRODUCT SUPPORT

ENSURING UPTIME … THE CONSTANT FOCUS

Columbus EquipmentCompany has proudly

served paving customerssince 1953.

Chuck Amnah (above)has been a central part

of this effort for the past 21 years.

Pavers are high-maintenance machines. Even the most reliable paver needs to be serviced annually to deal with the inevitable wear and tear that comes from handling abrasive materials.Winter, when pavers often sit idle, is an excellent time to perform a thorough maintenance routine on a paver, getting it ready for a working season free of downtime.

Columbus Equipment Company has extensive knowledge and experience working on pavers, with at least one paver specialist working in each of the company's branches. Technicians havebeen trained by several paving and roller manufacturers and receive additional training eachyear to stay on top of new developments. Additionally, a parts department that catalogs an comprehensive inventory of paver parts is key in successfully maintaining your machine.

For decades, customers have entrusted their paving equipment with Columbus EquipmentCompany. To make it even easier for customers, the company recently assigned Chuck Amnahas product support specialist for the Paving Division. As many of you know, Chuck has servedColumbus Equipment customers for over 24 years, and he has specialized in paver repair for21 of those years. If there's a problem a paver can develop, Chuck has seen it … and fixed it.

In the new position, Chuck will have companywide oversight on paver-related issues.“Whether someone needs a part number or schematic, has warranty problems or wantsadvice on repair issues, I'll make sure things are taken care of,” he said. He will work withcustomers, technicians and product support representatives to make sure paving customersexperience as little downtime as possible.

This winter, Amnah will conduct paver audits with the product support reps at each of thebranches. During the audit, key components such as material handling bearings, auger segmentsand flight chains are inspected. Wear pieces are evaluated, including ultrasonic measurementsof floor plate and screed plate thickness. “A paver audit gives you an outline of what needs to berepaired. Whether you do your own repairs or have Columbus Equipment do them, the paveraudit is your best starting point for getting your paver ready for spring,” he said.

Schedule your paver audit through your branch PSR. The audit can be performed in thefield or at the shop.

“A paver that's not working is not making money. That's why I highly recommend an annual audit,” Amnah added.

Dynapac's new Tier 4 version of the F1000 paverretains the qualities that make the Dynapac a reliable,high-performing machine and features additions thatincrease ease-of-operation and ease-of-maintenance.Production of the new machine will begin in April2012 at Dynapac's factory in Garland, Texas, accordingto Ryan Gaida, Dynapac's product manager for U.S.pavers, as he shared insight into the new machine'sdevelopment exclusively with Columbus EquipmentCompany customers.

New features include:Cummins Tier 4 EngineThe new powerplant offers the same power ratings asthe current F1000—220 hp at 2000 rpm and 230 hp at1800 rpm. To meet Tier 4 regulations, the engine has anexhaust gas recirculation system and diesel particulatefilter. The new Tier 4 engine does not affect the opera-tion of the paver, Gaida noted. The Tier 4 engine testedin the F1000 utilizes passive regeneration to controldiesel particulates. The only difference noticeable to the

operator should be the Tier 4 display functions andsafety measures added to the consoles.

“We've also kept excellent visibility around the paverand the low deck height,” he added. “We listened tocustomers' requests and made additional improvementsaround the paver.”

Feeder Control SystemAnother key change is in the feeder control system, whichwill allow independent control of the left- and right-handfeeders. This allows the operator to turn one system onmanual and leave the other in automatic mode whencoming up to a manhole or end of a pass where materialneeds to be turned off on one side of the paver.

Hydraulic and AugerSystem ImprovementsDynapac also fine-tuned various systems to increase efficiency and/or accessibility. On the hydraulic system, forexample, a new larger filter has been added to extend filterlife, improved the hose routing and modified the position ofcomponents to improve access to them.

There was a small change to Dynapac's exclusive out-board drive auger system. Hoses were rerouted to reducethe need for hose extensions when auger extensions areused, Gaida said. “We did that without affecting the visibili-ty around our auger system.”

Reduced Noise LevelsFor operators, the most noticeable improvement will belower noise levels. Dynapac has cut noise from two dif-ferent sources—engine noise out of the exhaust and fannoise. The paver features a new on-demand, hydraulic-driven fan that is significantly quieter, Gaida noted. “Atlower operating loads, you'll see a significant decrease inpaver noise levels. Most times, you operate at 60 or 70percent horsepower, so operators should see a significantdecrease in noise.” Dynapac isn't done with noise reductionyet; the company will further test fan designs before produc-tion begins, seeking additional noise level reductions.

Other changes include improving the visibility of the consoles and improving access to the motor, planetary and undercarriage components.

In many ways, however, the story of the Tier 4 paver is what'snot changing, added Gaida, who was project manager for theF1000 redesign. “We have the same great auger system, the same robust, reliable undercarriage system, and a very efficient drive control system. By maintaining arobust system that minimizes downtime, operators andtechnicians are ensured of having a reliable system that optimizes productivity.”

“AT LOWER OPERATING LOADS, YOU'LL SEE A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN

PAVER NOISE LEVELS. Ryan Gaida; U.S. Paver Product Manager, Dynapac

DYNAPAC TIER 4 F1000 Onsite With The Shelly Company

The new Dynapac Tier 4 F1000 was recently put through its paces by The ShellyCompany on a two-day project in Columbus,Ohio. The crew used 301 and a Type 2 mixon the job.

“The F1000 did well really with both mixes and did what we wanted with no problems,”said Mike Wiley, foreman for The ShellyCompany paving crew. “The new CumminsTier 4 engine had plenty of power.”

“The Dynapac compared favorably withthe paver we normally use. The machine isnoticeably quieter and the low deck heightallowed the screed man good visibility,”added Wiley.

The crew commented on the new independent controls to the right- and left-hand feeders. “When we approached theend, we were able to shut off the dragchains and just run the augers to keep running the material out, which reducescleanup,” said Wiley.

The Shelly Company Foreman Mike Wiley onsite at Route 42 in Union County, Ohio.
