  • 3D PDFAUTHORINGDocument3D is designed for creating interactivedocuments. With extensive 3D tools,Document3D makes it easy to create multiplepage 3D documents.

There are various strategies for including 3D inyour rich media publications.

In many publications, the 3D model is theprimary focus of the document. In these cases, itmay make the most sense to use Document3Dfor the entire document. When this approach istaken, users will create complete, mulitple pagedocuments with Document3D and will use theintegrated 3D editing tools. This offers a singlesoftware solution that is suitable for technicalpublications, product manuals, presentations andmore.

If you are expecting to just add 3D as supportingmaterial to your documents you may desire toonly use Document3D as necessary. Thisapproach involves only using Document3D asthe authoring tool for pages in your documentthat include interactive 3D. This makes it easy tocontinue using the tools your are familiar withfor most of the document while usingDocument3D for the 3D auhoring. Once thepages are created and exported to PDF, they caneasily be inserted into a larger document as anappendix or as a replacement for a page that doesnot include interactive 3D.

3D & PAGE DESIGNDocument3D, highlighted in this chapter, uniquely combines 3D model editing withcomplete page design. Because Document3Dcombines these capabilities in a single, intuitivepackage, authors can quickly create PDFdocuments with exciting 3D content.

Document3D provides a complete set of pagedesign and layout tools. These tools can be usedto create custom page designs. Toolfunctionality includes inserting pages, creatingand placing shapes on a page, adding text to apage, importing and placing images andphotographs, adding headers and footers, settingup page sections, setting up a master page, importing 3D models and positioning the viewsof the 3D on the page.

Document3D also includes all the 3D tools youneed to create animations from 3D models. Youcan animate the movement of individual parts orthe movement of the camera position. In thisway you can create various views of the 3Dmodel easily that help you communicate theoverall concepts of the rich media experience.

  • Document3D gives you the ability to create buttons that activate an animation or tables that list each procedure as step-by-step instructions. These interactive elements are published as interactive buttons in the resulting PDF file.

Dynamic text fields allow you to create areas of text that update as the 3D view changes. Text can be used in this way to describe a selected part of the 3D model, offer detailed procedures or switch captions as views are selected.

Document3D provides tools to modify the 3D model s appearance for illustrations or full-color images. With these 3D tools you can create:

PUBLISHINGTO PDFYou may naturally assume that a PDF documentwith a 3D model will be much larger than a PDFfile with images. In many cases this is not true. When many interactive views of a single modelare used throughout a document, the overall filesize can be smaller when compared to a PDF filewith multiple images.

Many 3D models were initially created inComputer Aided Design (CAD) software. Thesemodels are generally quite complex and large.Much of the information included in the modelsis required only for use in the CAD program anddoes not offer any extra information whenpublished as a PDF. In addition, large modelscan reduce the interactive performance of the3D model and unnecessarily increase PDF filesize.

Upon import, Pages3D automatically reducesthe size of the 3D model by as much as 98%.There are also included tools for decreasing thecomplexity of the 3D model as it is prepared forpublishing. This improves the performance anddecreases the size of the resulting PDF.
