Objectives
Each “think tank” group will discuss each scenario from the worksheet.
Identify the problems facing each person.
Begin listing possible solutions that you can give them to help them overcome their problems.
State specific agencies and benefits that could lend assistance.
Use common sense when giving advice for problems that the New Deal might not be able to help with.
Prepare to share your solutions with the class.
GOALS
Each group will submit a final copy of all suggestions made by your group for each scenario.
Remember that you must work to make sure that the person seeking your help leaves your office in a better frame of mind then they came in with…
You are working for them but also for FDR.

Unemployed steelworker from Pittsburgh Pa.
32 yrs. Old Married with four kids Recently purchased a
row home in the city How can the New
Deal help Joe “the steel worker”?
Case #1Solutions…
FERA – “dole” payments Social Security – unemployment HOLC – loan for the house. WPA or PWA job Keep checking with union about “call
backs”
Case #2
College graduate Portrait painting
degree 23 yrs old Male or female? Single College loans owed How can the New
Deal help her/him?
Case #2 Solutions…
Get a job with the WPA arts program. Advise person to move back in with
parents to help with cost of living for you and your parents.
Case #3
WWI wounded vet. Laid off from work
due to your disability.
Clerk in an office. Married with no
kids. Live in New York
City. How can the New
Deal help this man?
Case #3 Solutions…
FERA – “dole” payments Social Security – aid to disabled Suggest visiting the NY Veterans Hospital for
help when needed. Contact FDR to let him know how you were
treated at your last job….. Obtain a job in any of the New Deal agencies
offices since you are a clerk. Suggest moving out of the city to NJ or a
boro Suggest that wife seek employment too.
Case #4
You are a junior in HS. 4th of 7 children You are 16. You live in a major NE
city. Father is unemployed Father is seriously ill. How can the New
Deal help this family?
Case #4 Solutions…
FERA – Dole payments Social Security – Unemployment Older brothers get jobs in CCC You get a job in the NYA Advise the boy that when your father
passes away come back to the office. File for Social Security – Aide to
Dependent Children once the father passes away.
Case #5
You are a mother of 4. Your husband
abandoned you and your kids.
You live in a small rural town.
You did not graduate from HS.
How can the New Deal help this woman?
Case #5 Solutions…
Suggest the woman move back with her parents for help with the kids.
Go back to get your diploma or technical training. (job skills needed)
Seek advise of your local doctor about “declaring” your deadbeat husband dead…
Begin collecting Social Security – Aide to dependent children.
Move to a larger city.
Conclusion
The New Deal provided help for millions of people to deal with the problems facing them during the Great Depression.
Not all problems, however, could be solved by the New Deal.
Unfortunately, a world war would end most of the misery caused by the great depression.
How is the New Deal still working today to help American’s?
