"It ispossible that something was slipped into his foodor his urine sample was tampered with to get thisresult," Jayasekera said of Perera, who was sentback to Sri Lanka after failing the doping test."We are doing our best to defend him," the

Ashley de Silva, the chiefexecutive of Sri Lanka Cricket, said the boardcould not discuss the case in line with InternationalCricket Council (ICC) anti-corruption regulations."Because of the anti-corruption regulations, wecannot say anything," de Silva told AFP.However a source on the board confirmed that theorganisation was conducting its own investigationinto the claims."The two players brought this to our notice," saidthe source, speaking on condition of anonymity.Although betting is illegal in most of the cricket-mad Indian subcontinent, there is no shortage ofbackstreet bookmakers -- many of whom havelinks to the underworld.

Ronnie Flanagan, who heads the ICC's anti-corrruption unit, recently acknowledged matchfixing would never be eradicated even thougha string of international stars have beenexposed as in the pay of bookmakers.Although no big-name Sri Lankan player hasever been convicted of corruption, severalformer stars have made allegations of eithermatch fixing or spot-fixing, when playersdeliberately bowl or field badly to give away aset number of runs. Fr. Cyril Gamini, the Church’s SocialCommunications Director, said the bishopsbelieved that Christmas trees and Santas were

only decorations and should not be brought intothe sanctity of the church. However, someCatholics were quick to protest against the orderby the bishops and asked that it be revoked. OneCatholic said that to set up a Christmas treeoutside the church was not practical because itwould be exposed to the current bad weather andcould be damaged.“Christmas trees and Santas are beautiful andharmless Catholic traditions and they shouldremain that way,” an irritated parishioner from theCatholic majority area of Moratuwa said.

Wigneswaranfrom P10Paramacharys said that it was formed becauseexisting political parties had failed to deliver.Chief Minister Wigneswaran has been at odds withthe TNA’s leaders since the beginning of this year.Just prior to the August 17 parliamentary electionshe declared that he would be “neutral” but heappealed to the people to vote for candidates withcertain attributes which clearly showed that hewas backing the radical TNPF.

The TNA leadership threatened to oust him foranti-party activities but Wigneswaran claimed thathe was a representative of the people and not theTNA. The push-bike Parliamentarians of LSSPReminisce Trots’ of 50s, 60s and 70s in 80years of Island’s Marxism( ) Comrade Colvin R. de Silva, waselected the President at the inaugural meeting ofLanka Sama Samaja Party on 21st December,80 years ago. The 28-year old young advocate inhis address referred to a public meetings heldsimultaneously by the new coalition of CeylonNational Congress [CNC], and A. E.Goonasinghe’s Ceylon Labour Party [CLP], hesaid,“…and with the Senanayakes and Jayatillakestravel the remnant that is miscalled the CeylonNational Congress; the organisation oflandowners had acted in the name of the peoplefor the founding of its own exclusive power. Themeeting of the CLP and the Trade UnionCongress reminds me of nothing so much as atravelling circus in which the central turn isalways played by the same clown”.---Ceylon Daily News of -23/12/1935In contrast to the type of people in today’spolitics, I reminisce, of three LSSPers, who I wasprivileged to witness in active politics during thegood old days of late 1940s up to the mid 1970s.All of them belonged to either middle-class orbelow, but were men of principles and highintegrity. They never betrayed the trust placed bythe voter or the party ‘comrades’. ContradictingGeorge Orwell, they engaged in politics free of,not only ‘lies, folly, evasions, hatred andschizophrenia’, but winning elections withoutspending a red cent; not accumulate wealth andfinally retired as destitute ordinary men.‘Mal Sahodaraya’ of KollupityaThe meagerly dressed staunch Trotskyite andformer MMC, who lived among the ‘Watte’population of Kollupitya in a temporary plank-walled shanty, threw the money away andscreamed,“I say, comrade Banda, give that letter back...,you seem to have lot of money, why don’t youhire a lawyer and get a draft?” Bandaiya was asenior porter employed in the Transport sectionof Shaw Wallace and Hedges in early 1970s atthe European managed multinational, where

most of our labour were members of LSSP’sblue-collar Union led by D. S. Mallawaarachchi, the one time City Father at Colombo Municipality,(In late 1950s or early 60s; not sure) : believeme, he represented the Kollupitiya Ward, whichincluded the elite voter of Cinnamon Gardens.Ninety percent of Colombo’s shanty dwellerswere with Marxists prior to 1970s and longbefore they were spoiled and bought over by‘throw money about’ UNP/SLFP politicians in thelate 60s and 70s. Banda, who was a member ofanother union, went to ‘Mal’ seeking his help toget an explanationletter drafted, [As hehad no confidence inhis union’s leadership]in response to adispute he had with themanagement. After listening to hisstory, ‘Mal’ typed theletter in duplicate andgot our man to sign itspending nearly two hours on the job. Bandaiya, who felt sorry for the man, instead of thankinghim, attempted to palm a five rupee note overwhich Mal lost his cool. (Banda’s wages).Bandaiya, back at work with the letter wascautioned by his colleagues, who knew Mal. Oneof them later told me: “Sir, whenever heappeared before Labour Tribunal in our cases,we invite him for lunch; Mal’s usual responsewas Buy me a toffee. Unwrapping it he wouldwalk up to the bus stop wearing his badly worn-out pair of rubber slippers.” Merrill Fernando ofMoratuwa In the early 1960s, while I wastravelling by bus to Dehiwela, at the Moratuwastand, a lean fair gentleman dressed in a whitesuite, and wearing a RED tie, and his white drillcoat hanging on his left arm, entered the sameCTB bus.A passenger who recognised him offered him hisseat, ‘Wadivenna, Merrill Sahodharaya’(ComradeMerrill, take a seat). Merrill Fernando, from thecoastal fishing village of Koralawella, Moratuwa, was one of the rebellious fighters of 1953 Hartal.

He won the 1960 March and July elections underLSSP beating business magnate, RuskinFernando of Velona fame. My next meeting withhim was in 1967; returning from work [My firstjob], a somewhat familiar person travelled withme in the same compartment in the train, but Ifailed to make out him until he got off the train atKoralawella, to be greeted by two fisher folkwomen saying, ‘Merrill apita, Api Merrilta...,Viplavayak langa enava-Ekata api serasenwa’.(We are for Merrill and Merrill for us; Revolutionround the Corner! We are working towards it’),

there was no scarcityfor slogans. Merrill, theMarxist ideologistbroke away along withEdmond Samarakkodyand otherrevolutionaries onprinciple, when theLSSP leadershipdecided to coalescewith ‘Capitalist

Sirimavo’, in 1964.He had to ‘pay the price’ in 1965 when he lost hisMoratuwa seat in Parliament to his formercolleague Wimalasiri de Mel [LSSP]. HenryPeiris, Panadura MP ‘47-’52 Mahathelge HenryPeiris, the father of the late Janadas Peiris, therespected Public Servant and senior journalist, travelled around his constituency using the onlyprecious vehicle he possessed, a push bicycle, during the 1947 election campaign. My homebecame a hive of political activity during theGeneral Elections 1952. Aged eight yearsthough, it was a unique experience, with twoolder siblings, both staunch supporters ofComrade Henry, the sitting MP and editor of theparty’s news bulletin, who beat Deputy Speakerin the 1947 State Council Election. Sir Susanthade Fonseka of UNP, was a member ofPanadura’s affluent plantations-owner familiesand former Ambassador to Japan. While Sir Susantha, according to my father, used to tour his constituency riding his horsefollowed by his driver and the limousine, ‘Henry

Sahodharaya’, the candidate of the LSSP’sbreakaway group Bolshevik-Leninists, woulddrop in to discuss campaign strategies with partymen in the area. He would park his Humber pushbicycle on a side and discuss ideological as wellas general politics with the people.Lesley Goonewardene, son of a famous GeneralPractitioner in Panadura was a leader of LSSP,and an equally wealthy man as Sir Susantha lostto Susantha de Fonseka in the 1936 StateCouncil elections, which forced him to abandonthe home seat in search of greener pastures inColombo North, another strong hold of Marxists.I remember, my brothers telling me how our MP,Henry Peiris Sahodaraya attended Parliament, representing the voters of Panadura using onlypublic transport. He did so until he lost to the UNP at the 1952General elections. Sir Susantha knew by namenot only his supporters but most of his opponentstoo. During the 1947 elections, one morning hehad stopped opposite our house, seeing myfather around, and had inquired, “Albert, yourchildren seem to be very busy!...working hard eh...? Very good, very good”, A sarcastic remarksighting the Red flag flying with the ‘lamp’symbol, across the road in front of the house. There were no party symbols then: Flags anddisplay of posters were not violations of ElectionLaw.

Premier keen to transform Vakarai-Batticaloastretch into tourism zonePlans to create a golf course by converting theValaichchenai Paper millIndependent tourism authority of the easternprovince to be set up next monthAims to set up a hotel school to fill the void inmiddle level managerial rolesProposes to revamp Trincomalee Airport into aninternational airportAnnual investment in the East amounts to Rs. 33 bof which Rs. 20 b local and Rs. 13 b foreign

By Shehana Dain(ft.lk) A major facelift is in progress in the easternregion under the overview of the Premier toaddress key sectors of economic potential, a topofficial said.Eastern Province Chief Minister Naseer Ahamedoutlined several projects that have been given thenod from Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghemainly in the area of tourism, of which one involvesbuilding a golf course in Valaichchenai utilising thepaper mill factory land.

“The Prime Minister isvery keen to developVakarai to Batticaloa asa tourism zone thatcomes around 80 acresof 18 km stretch. Inaddition to that he hasthe intention to convertthe ValaichchenaiPaper Mill into a golfcourse addition to a100 acre industrialzone. We are hopefulthat this will take offwithin two years,” hepointed out.Ahamed made theseremarks at a pressconference held toexplain thearrangements of thesecond ‘Invest in EastForum’ to be held on 28January next year.Elaborating on thehuman resourcepotential of theprovince, he said200,000 youth wereunemployed of which4,000 were graduates.Citing the naturalresources available henoted that a vast areaof land is availablewhile 980 water tankswhich could be utilised

were also accessible. Moreover, he mentioned that a statute had beenpassed to formulate an independent tourismauthority for the Eastern Province which would beset up within a month. Thereby it will be headed byChandra Mohotti,Senior advisor to theChief Minister onTOURISM AFFAIRS. Heis also the Senior VicePresident of the GalleFace Hotel and formerChairman of Sri LankaHotel School. Thereforethe authority will initiatea hotel school which willprimarily look intotraining individuals formiddle levelmanagement roles inthe tourism sector.“We have already gotapproval for that statute. We will be setting up our own tourism authorityunder the Provincial Council. Our main project issetting up a training school which attracts studentscoming from even India, Bangladesh, Maldivesand Pakistan in addition BUP_DFT_DFT-1-ARTtostudents coming in from Sri Lanka. We want tohave a very high-standard, internationallyrecognised university and we will allocate 40-50acres of land for it close to Pasikudah. We will alsobe marketing the Eastern Province through thisauthority,” Ahamed noted.According to Ahamed, the key issue which hinderstourism in the Eastern region of the country is thelack of efficient transportation channels. As asolution to the concern he stated that he hasproposed to the Premier an idea to make theTrincomalee domestic airport into an internationalairport.“We have three domestic airports in the East that isTrincomalee, Ampara and Batticaloa. My plan is toat least make Trincomalee an international airport, which can be done. Our plan is not to have a hugebuilding but to have at least a 4-kilometre stretch ofrunway. If the airport can be set up with air facilitiesthen even a big theme park also can be set up

there like Genting Highlands. The Prime Ministerpromised us that he will sort the transport issue forus. Some companies are interested in the seaplane initiative,” he said.“The Koneswaram building is one of the most

important religious sites forHindus and basically for Indians. So if we can open up thisinternational airport millions oftourists will only come in fromIndia,” he added.According to Ahamed, last yearthe forum attracted around 280participants and 100 individualsplanned field trips to the provincewhereas currently 12 investorsare on the ground currentlyinvesting in projects. He expectsto attract 500 local andinternational investors this year.“There are two investors fromDubai and there are quite a fewinvestments from Saudi Arabia

and from India there are a few handloom factoriescoming in as local investors Hameedia has startedto set up a garment factory. Lot of people havebought land to build hotels. All these days we hadissues with the land lease tax and foreign investorshad to buy land here under names of locals andhad many difficulties. Now since it has been takenoff we hope within the next three to five yearsmaximum we will see an improvement,” he noted. When asked what the total investment for theEastern Province was, BOI Director Dilip S.Samarasinghe told the Daily FT that currently therewere around 50 projects underway in the Easternregion which amounted to around Rs. 33 billion interms of overall investment.“Local investments amount to Rs. 20 billion andforeign investments cost Rs. 13 billion and theseprojects employ around 11,000 people. They coversectors such as tourism, aquaculture, fisheries, apparel, power generation, infrastructure andagriculture. There are 16 tourism projects, all ofwhich are either local or joint ventures. Tourismand leisure sector projects are mainly spreadacross Trincomalee and Batticaloa and Pasikudahcomes under the latter.”

SRI LANKA LEUKAEMIA FOUNDATION(UK)9TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

By Vinusha Paulraj(sundaytimes.lk) Neat littleblue and white road indicatorswon’t get you to RegentStreet. Neither will you find iton a map of Colombo 10. Ifanything you would discoverthat this passage along theAccident Wing of the NationalHospital is now called E.W.Perera Mawatha. Survivingthis obvious change and manyless noticed ones stands theRegent Street ChristianReformed Church (CRC),previously known as the DutchReformed Church, as it did forthe past 100 years.Sitting snugly next to thePresbyterian Girls’ School,Regent Street Church is located along the busierside of Norris Canal Road and its humble façadedoesn’t command attention. An observant fewwould dismiss scaffolding around the entrance asChristmas, but the preparations are for December22 – the church’s centenary.Inside these thick walls consecrated in December1915, little has changed since a century ago.“We’ve had to do some renovations from 2009 to2011,” a senior member of the congregation,Helene de Rosayro tells us. Asbestos sheetsreplace the roofing tiles and wooden beamssupporting the ceiling had lived-out their purpose.

Thin metal framing on individual blocks of glass oneach window have been a harder task to matchand replace she says. The dainty metal work is inline with suspended lamp stands, twisted inelegant swirls.Rev. S. Nelson, who currently overlooks theEnglish and Tamil congregations has served atRegent Street for two years. Captivated by the

Church’s Romanesque architecture he feels it’samong the better preserved premises of the CRC.Regent Street is perhaps one of the few remainingorthodox CRC Consistories. In true reformistfashion a wooden pulpit is visible from anywherewithin the church. “It represents the prominenceplaced on the Word” says Deacon Hilary Moore.Originally from Regent Street’s sister Consistory inMaligakanda, he says this prominence inspiredhour-long Sunday sermons he sat through as achild.“I also remember in the 40′s and 50′s ladies of thecongregation turned-up in gloves, hats and often“had an outfit tailored for each week.” A gentleman

residing in Maradana madehats to measure, makingstops along the parishioners’homes to pick-up orders herecalls. “Another must” for theladies’ Sunday best werenylon stockings.Former worshipper, LangstonJoseph remembers beingthrilled as a child duringannual Military Day services.During the time of Rev. D.Evan Joseph who also servedas the Military Padre, regimental bandsceremoniously marched downNorris Canal Road leading ininfantry for the service.Where one would ordinarily

expect to find an altar, at the front of a church isthe choir-stall. Once again, this is testament to aheavy importance placed on scriptures alone voidof all the frills we’re told. Before Helene was oldenough to take her current seat at the piano, herfather as Church Secretary “which was then calleda Scriba. Like many children in the parish today,

she wasintroduced to thethree figures in thestained-glasspanels behind thechoir-stall depicted“Faith, Hope andCharity.”Embodying thespirit of thecongregation, these three virtuesare thecornerstones onwhich RegentStreet’s Churchnow stands. Initialworshippers here, were patrons ofthe Maligakanda Consistory which gathered everySunday in what was known as Palm House.According to the writings of Douglas Franciscus in‘The Faith of Our Fathers’, Rev. L. A. Josephrecognised that this premises didn’t suffice to serve“the needs of the congregation” in February, 1914.The estimated cost to put-up a new church wasRs. 35,000, to be raised upon selling Palm House.Designed by W. Claessen, construction in RegentStreet started off in December 1914. The need tosell Palm House never arose, owing to thegenerosity of parishioners. The baptismal font, pulpit bible, stained glass, hymn books are just a

few of the generous offerings. For many, memories of Regent Street include thenow abandoned practice of learning-up theHeidelberg Catechism, acting in Sunday schoolplays and visiting the Accident Ward to pray for thewounded. Currently though, many older membersof the Consistory are scattered both here andabroad. “We still have people coming to churchfrom as far as Negombo,” Helene says. “It’s what Ilove about this church” Hilary shares. “There is atogetherness and unity” that has survived just aslong.

Primary ObjectiveThe keen interest of H.E the president, in eradication and prevention of chronic kidney

disease spreading specially in 10 districts led the establishment of the Presidential Task

force on Prevention of Kidney Disease of uncertain etiology. Primary Objective of the

task force is to manage the chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) and

prevent further spreading with the coordination of respective authorities and ensure,

awareness, preventive and welfare measures are in place to the benefit of the effected

community

Background to Chronic Kidney DiseaseChronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a widespread disease caused by wide range of

precipitating factors. According to available health statistics there are approximately

20,000 admissions/ re-admissions of patients with renal failure to government

hospitals with approximately 2,000 deaths annually.

Chronic kidney disease of uncertain origin (CKDu) was first detected in the early 90s

from North Central Province, which is a toxic nephropathy causing tubular necrosis. It

differs from the pathophysiology of CKD caused by Hypertension and Diabetes. CKDu

affected areas adjacent to North Central Province were also detected which include

Ampara, Badulla, Kurunegala, Matale, Mullative, Trincomalee and Vavuniya Districts.

CKDu is the existence of chronic kidney disease without diabetes, hypertension,

ureteric calculi, glomerulonephritis, pyelonephritis or snake bite. In Sri Lanka, the

etiology of CKDu is uncertain. However the disease is attributed to several causative

factors including high use of agrochemicals, hard water which include high levels of

Calcium and Fluoride, dehydration due to inadequate drinking of water and heat, and

presence or absence of certain chemical compounds (eg. high levels of Arsenic and

Cadmium, low levels of Selenium).

There are approximately 70,000 estimated CKD/CKDu patients in known high risk areas

of which majority are from North Central Province. Madawachchiya, Padaviya,

Kabathigollawa, Rambawa, Madirigiriya, Wilgamuwa, Girandurukotte, Padavi Sripura,

Gomerankadawala, Dehiattakandiya, Polpithigama and Welioya Medical Officer of

Health (MOH)/Divisional Secretariat (DS) areas have high prevalence of CKD/CKDu

(Annexure 01) (Fig 1).

Community screening for CKD/CKDu started in 2008 and so far 38,000 patients with

CKD/CKDu were identified during screening. Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa Districts

reporting approximately 1,000 and 500 CKD/CKDu patients annually during the past

four years.

***(Ministry of Health 2015)

Causes of Chronic Kidney Diseases of Uncertain Aetiology

(CKDu) Prevalent in certain parts of the dry zone

Evidence shows;

* High level of Arsenic, Cadmium in humans in these areas

* Low levels of Selenium in humans (Malnutrition)

* High levels of Calcium and fluoride in the water

* Presence of Agrochemicals residues in humans

* Dehydration due to inadequate drinking of water & heat

* Alcohol and tobacco consumption

* Excessive and indiscriminate use of agrochemicals

1.Screening for early detection of the disease through selected communities

2.Strengthening of the 04 curative sectors for management of the CKD patients

a) Primary Health Care Units

b) Nephrologists Visiting Centers

c) Hospitals with Dialysis Facilities

d) Nephrology Visiting Centers

3.Introduction of CKD/CKDU surveillance and patient registries in high-risk areas

4.Providing Financial Assistance to CKD/CKDU patients.

Action undertaken against prevention of Chronic

Kidney Disease

I HAVE TAKEN STEPS TO IMPLEMENT A NATIONAL PROGRAM ON THE PREVENTION OF CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASEWHICH IS AFFECTING OUR FARMERS WHO ARE THE LIFE LINE OF THIS NATION.

ANDREW FIDEL FERNANDO IN HAMILTON

(Contd: on P25)

(espncricinfo.com) Angelo Mathews hasdescribed the second-innings collapse on daythree as a "mockery", after Sri Lanka went on tolose the Hamilton Test by five wickets. His teamhad a lead of 126 with all second-inningswickets intact, but lost 10 wickets for 62 inside a14-over period either side of lunch on day three."We just had to bat well and dig deep, but wemade a real mockery out of our second inningsbatting and we just couldn't give enough runs forthe bowlers to get them out," Mathews said. "Itis actually very disappointing the way the gameunfolded towards the end. We had our chance, especially after getting them all out for 240-odd

in the first innings. We had a healthy lead."The first two batsmen to be dismissed had eachbeen given out gloving bouncers behind thewicket, as they attempted to fend balls away.Mathews said the remaining batsmen had thensought to bat more aggressively, hoping to scorequickly before the inevitable good ball got themout.Of the five remainingbatsmen, Mathews andKusal Mendis were caughthooking, MilindaSiriwardana was outplaying the pull shot,Dinesh Chandimal was

caught flicking off hiships to leg gully, andKithuruwan Vithanagecarved a short andwide delivery to thirdman."Especially after thefirst couple of wicketsthey used the tactic ofbumping us," Mathewssaid. "Dimuth[Karunaratne} andUdara [Jayasundera]were bumped out.

By Ravi Nagahawatte(nation.lk) This year’s Junior Mr. Sri LankaShamila Wijewickreme resembles a healthymodel. In fact he says he is a fan of some of thebest fitness models walking the ramp atinternational competitions. As a 20-year-old adult,Shamila possesses a pleasing physique, butbehind that trim body there is both power andgrace. He flexed his shapely muscles as hepumped up by lifting some dumbbells during aphoto shoot done for theNation. The guy exudedloads of confidence andshowed he was enjoyingevery minute in front ofthe camera.Shamila beat otherequally well-muscledphysiques at the Mr. SriLanka Body BuildingChampionships held atAnanda College onDecember 13 (Sunday).Looking back he said, “Ibelieve I won because Iworked hard on the posing aspect of bodybuilding”.He educated himself at Dharmaraja CollegeKandy and like most Rajans, tried his luck at rugbyunion. He visited the gym to do weight training tohelp his rugby. But the body building bug bit himfast and he had to say goodbye to the sport playedwith the oval shaped ball. “Rugby is more popularin comparison to the new sport I’ve chosen. Ichose body building because it is more difficult. Abody builder has to have a sound knowledge ofnot only exercises, but also about nutrition, waterretention and body balance. I like to choosedifficult things in life,” chuckled Shamila. This muscleman said that body building is anexpensive sport where a competitive athlete willhave to spend close to Rs 3000 a day to obtain

the required number of healthy meals. He said thatduring competition his daily diet comprises eat 30egg whites, chicken breasts and protein shakes.“There is a limit you can build with normal food. Ifyou wish to break through that barrier then youhave to invest on supplements,” explainedShamila who added that he can reachinternational standard if he receives the backing ofa sponsor. He fondly remembered his body building gurus,

Upul Nishantha andHerath from Kandy, NihalWeerathunga who taughthim posing, Susanga andMothilal Jayatilake, whoeducated him on musclebalance. But the realmotivating factor thatfueled his spirits camefrom the help he receivedfrom his mother, father, elder sister and gymmembers who he saidunderstood the strugglehe was going through and

helped him in his quest of building his body bylifting weights in the gym.He said he loved body building, but added that hehas an equal passion to try our fitness modellingand walk the ramp. “I watch with interestinternational fitness models like Lazar Angelo,Gerardo Gabriel and Simeon Panda,” saidShamila while hinting that this aspect of modellingcould be where his future lies.Shamila believes that this win will motivate otherfitness enthusiasts to think of not just liftingweights, but to compete as well. He knows nowthat he is a role model for any junior who pumpsiron in the gym. After all he has to live up to thereputation his gym friends have given him now,‘the boy with a fabulous physique’.

Lanka. I had to fightto come here,” saidthe power athletewho bagged six goldmedals and a silvermedal. He said that powerlifting is an expensivesport and if there is nosupport for him hiscareer would come toend in 2-3 years time.According toJayathilake thecompany whichemploys him,Commercial Credit andfinance PLC, hadbailed him out byproviding him with

Ransilu disgusted despite medalwinning spree

Mathewsfrom P24They tried to negotiate it but they couldn't really.Sometimes the ball took off and sometimes it keptlow. The bounce was not really consistent on thatwicket."We thought the best way to handle it was to tryand be positive and to score some runs off it - notrecklessly. We wanted to try and score on the shortside of the ground especially - to take the bowlerson from that side and leave some balls from thelonger side. "Both teams struggled to face theshort ball. Both teams were applying that sametactic, and the batters from the both teams justcouldn't handle it, apart from Kane Williamson.Looking back we could have negotiated it a bitbetter than we did." Sri Lanka have lost all but one

Test series this year - winning only against WestIndies at home - but Mathews said the quality inthe dressing room would eventually translate intovictories. "When it comes to the Test team, we arevery inexperienced and I'm sort of happy in theway we competed," he said. "It's just a matter oftime. We've got guys in the team who haven'tplayed more than five Tests- a whole lot of thembatsmen. We've got the quality. We've got the skillsit's just a matter of time."The more they play, the sooner they will learn. Wetake a lot of confidence in the way we fought wellin the first innings. I felt we kept them underconstant pressure. They dug deep and they are thedeserved winners."Mathews said he was happy with his team'scatching, "which was almost 100%", but reservedmost praise for fast bowler Dushmantha

Chameera. His match-figures of 9 for 115 were thebest in the series, and the best for a Sri Lankaseamer overseas since Chaminda Vaas' 10-wickethaul at Napier in 1995."Chameera was absolutely brilliant," Mathews said."He is just finding his way in Test cricket. He'splayed just a few games and he was able to shakethe New Zealanders who have played on bouncingtracks which they're quite used to. He managed toupset their rhythm."He can bowl a good yorker as well, and if he cankeep his pace up there to constantly trouble thebatsmen - that's all I want. I just want him to bowlas quick as he can. We've got to be careful withhim as well - he is an asset and you can't overusehim."The Hamilton Test was also the third occasion thisyear, in which Sri Lanka slid to defeat despite

having achieved a good position in the match. InJanuary, Sri Lanka had New Zealand five down inthe third innings at Wellington, with a lead of just24, but wound up losing that game by 193 runs. Then in Pallekele in July, Sri Lanka set Pakistan375 for victory and lost by seven wickets."We're definitely not being complacent," Mathewssaid. "It's just that we get to a good position and wedo a couple of mistakes where the game turnsaround. It has been the case in the Basin Reservematch as well - we dropped Kane Williamson on20 or something and he got a double-hundred.We've come close in a few games but we just did acouple of mistakes. From there we couldn't getback in the game."Andrew Fidel Fernando is ESPNcricinfo's SriLanka correspondent. @andrewffernando© ESPN Sports Media Ltd.

By Dyan Pathiravithana(ceylontoday.lk) CT Sports: DushmanthaChameera is definitely the fast bowling find of themillennium so far in Sri Lankan cricket. They hadbeen looking for fast bowlers and seem to havebeen looking in the right places.Cricket in this Island Nation was always playedquite enthusiastically; at the levels it was played. When looking into the development of fast

bowlers, not much happened in the department offast bowling. It is a well known fact that the gameevolved around Colombo and other big citiesaround the country. With Colombo being thecentre, all looked to get into Colombo with theirabilities in sports. Colombo easily had the bestfacilities sportsmen looked for to enhance theirprospects life demanded. At school level at thattime where an average of around 2500 to 4000attended, schools with well established names hadbetter coaches. As a result these schoolsdeveloped their game to high levels. Although theyhad the game going at high speed, theconcentration always was in the batting skills. Thatthey did to a very high standard. Fast bowling hadto come from natural abilities rather than fromsheer coaching. When they found the right talent, tips on fast bowling were passed on. May be theweather had something to do with the dullnessaround coaching fast bowlers. It was much easierfor boys to try turning their arms around at slowerpace. Schools had plenty of off and leg spin andsome good young men who could bowl mediumpace cutters. Coaches had plenty of faith in theirabilities to get wickets more regularly in theabsence of genuine fast bowlers. The ones whohad hostile pace would run through sides on theirown, and schools did occasionally produce suchtalent. That was it and they were called up for clubrepresentation when schooling was finished.Fast bowling is much dependent on speed andenergy. If youngsters with these abilities couldbowl straight and accurately, you have a fastbowler who could be developed quickly. It is alsoimportant to be flexible to avoid injuries: Todevelop all this is sheer hard work. Like in trackand field they have to undergo regular training tokeep up their regular work load when playingcricket. Imagine bowling at around 145 km andkeeping it up for 60 to 90 minutes when requiredsometimes. It is needed because genuine pace is worrisometo batting and wickets would go down faster. Butwhen the conditions favoured batting and the trackwas dull, it is skills and genuine pace that madefast bowling look good when Wes Hall was giventhe responsibility to bowl long spells. That is a genuine fast bowler who was ready to gointo action when required.Dushmantha Chameera, Nuwan Pradeep andSuranga Lakmal come from similar backgrounds. They learnt their cricket the hard way. All threeknow that it is only fast bowling that will keep themin the squad. Unlike those city boys these are menwho are used to working hard and willing to dowhat is required to make their presence felt. Wehave seen this regularly; how some good fastbowlers are breaking down and that includessome of Sri Lanka's finest. If Sri Lanka Cricket has one thing going well forthem it is those country boys. It was deemed anecessity to look for broad shoulders in thecountryside and it has helped to get some goodprospects at the time they were needed. This isone requirement to keep at it. While doing so it isimperative that cricket too gets a boost in thoseareas because it is going to help with the cause ofimproving the game and finding good talent with it.Let us get the youngsters in the countryside fromwhere they at present get on with cricket - thepaddy fields - and get them used to better thingsthat would hasten their improvement to get in thegame as better players.

(asianmirror.lk) Smart diving, a fewpowerful smashes, some deftplacing and an awful lot ofunforced errors. It was all there, asthe Sri Lankan men overcameMaldives in the opening match ofthe AVC Cup Asia Central Zonebeach volleyball championship atthe Kozhikode Beach on Friday. Both the Sri Lankan teams won instraight sets. The first to take the court wereAsanka Kumara and PubuduEkanayake for the Lankans and

Anil Ahmed Naseer and AbdulWahid Shiunaz for Maldives. The Lankan pair looked clearly thesuperior side, as they won 21-17,23-21 in 34 minutes. With Kumaracoming up with some nicesmashes, the Lankans were ableto take control early on.They got even better, as the matchwore on; Ekanayake alsoproduced a few timely winners.Shiunaz and Naseer made thingseasier for the Lankans by makingtoo many mistakes.

In the second matchtoo, things werehardly different, asthe Lankan duo ofSashimal Yapa andSujeewa Chinthakaoutclassed theirMaldivescounterparts AbbulHameed Adnan andNaseem Adam toensure that theirteam reached thesemifinals.

(colombogazette.com) Sri Lanka bowling coachChampaka Ramanayake said the DRS systemhad “a lot of errors”, in the wake of what seemedto be an incorrect DRS call which cost Sri Lankaa wicket.Third umpire Richard Kettleborough hadoverturned Paul Reiffel’s not-out decision on acaught-behind call on batsman UdaraJayasundera in the 23rd over of Sri Lanka’ssecond innings. There appeared to be no

conclusive evidence that the batsman had glovedthe ball on snicko or hotspot, but Kettleboroughmay have instead relied on a seeming deviationfrom the glove. This deviation, seenfrom a rear camera angle, was latershown to be an optical illusion.“What I saw on the TV – it looked likenot out,” Ramanayake said. “I can’t talkabout the umpiring. We haven’t spokento anyone. Whatever the decision is

made wehave to takeit. We have tohave a realserious thinkabout this DRSsystem. There are a lotof errors.”The short ball fromDoug Bracewell left afaint hotspot mark as itpassed Jayasundera’s

gloves, but this mark faded quickly, meaning itcould have been made by air friction generatedby the moving ball. Snicko showed no conclusive

spike. The rear angleinitiallyshowed asignificantdeviation, butimportantly, the glove didnot appearto movewhen theball

seemed to brush it. Kettleborough had notseen a split-screen before making hisdecision. The broadcaster later put up a side-angle view of the dismissal, simultaneous withthat rear angle, which seemed to show thatthe deviation seen on the rear angle camewell before the ball had reached the glove. In

any case, both umpire Reiffel and batsmanJayasundera appeared unhappy with theeventual outcome.New Zealand bowler Neil Wagner, who had onlyseen the original review on the big screen at theground, acknowledged that there was littleevidence on hotspot or snicko. However, hethought the correct decision had been arrived at,due to the seeming deviation seen in that rear-angle shot. (Courtesy Cricinfo)
