New Coasters Newsletter November & December 2016 Kia Ora and Haere Mai, 0 What do you like most about living on the West Coast? I must say I really appreciate that I can feel safe wherever I go at any time of the day or night. New Zealand ranks among the safest countries in the world (no. 4 on Global Peace Index and no. 7 on World Economic Forum) and I think the West Coast is even safer than other parts of the country. All our sea, land and airspace are nuclear free zones. We also have one of the world’s lowest corruption indexes (no. 4 on the list of countries with low corruption straight after the Scandinavian countries http://www.transparency.org/cpi2015) My recent trip overseas makes me appreciate this even more - in Europe and other countries police officers armed with machine guns are frequent sights, announcements to be aware of pickpocketing are very common, you drive past atomic reactors, etc. In New Zealand we also have personal freedom, good consumer rights and lots of space. New Coasters Newsletter November & December 2016

Kia Ora and Haere Mai, 0 What do you like most about living on the West Coast?

I must say I really appreciate that I can feel safe wherever I go at any

time of the day or night. New Zealand ranks among the safest

countries in the world (no. 4 on Global Peace Index and no. 7 on World

Economic Forum) and I think the West Coast is even safer than other

parts of the country.

All our sea, land and airspace are nuclear free zones. We also have

one of the world’s lowest corruption indexes (no. 4 on the list of countries

with low corruption straight after the Scandinavian countries

http://www.transparency.org/cpi2015)

My recent trip overseas makes me appreciate this even more - in

Europe and other countries police officers armed with machine guns

are frequent sights, announcements to be aware of pickpocketing are

very common, you drive past atomic reactors, etc.

In New Zealand we also have personal freedom, good consumer

rights and lots of space. (https://www.newzealandnow.govt.nz/why-choose-

nz/safe-secure)

We shouldn’t take this for granted because in many other places on

our planet life is far more dangerous and challenging!

Let’s keep our (new) home a safe place – by looking after each other,

connecting well, respecting the environment and showing that we

care! Make sure you are a welcoming community member, offer help

where needed and share a bit of your time & resources - our

communities can only be as good as those who contribute…

All our activities encourage the participation of new AND not so new

Coasters - I look forward to meeting you. Birte

Information sessions Moving to New Zealand means adjusting to many things and finding out how they work like the health system, finding out about your rights, understanding the road code and much more. We can help you with this by organising information sessions – please let me know what you’d like to learn more about!

Food stalls We LOVE markets, fairs and community celebrations! They are wonderful opportunities to get out & about and meet others. They could also be a great way of showcasing our cultural diversity and enhancing events by selling ethnic food! We are planning to run a New Coasters stall at several local celebrations and would like YOU to become involved – by preparing & donating food and/or helping to set up and run the stall and/or selling food with us on the day. The next events we are planning to be at will be the Kumara Gala Day on 26th November and the Greymouth Christmas Fair on 3rd December. Running a successful stall requires a bit of preparation so we’d love to hear from you in advance to have a chat PS: the organisers are also looking for craft stalls at the Christmas Fair – contact the Left Bank Art Gallery for details: …

What else is happening:

There’s nothing more valuable for newcomers than having someone local to help them find their way around and make valuable connections – and for those who have lived here for a while it can be very rewarding to become a ‘buddy’ for someone new, show them around and introduce them to people and places. Does that sound like you? Then contact me soon!
